Dora Cookies Simplfied
As a rule, I generally try to avoid character cookies. Hidden behind those deceptively sweet little faces is more stress than you’d ever imagine. But when your six year old niece decides she wants Dora cookies, what’s a gal to do?
I’ve come to accept the fact that character cookies will always involve a bit of worry and fear {for me} but I have a few helpful tips for the next time you’re faced with the inevitable request.
The most important thing to remember is that simplification is KEY! One of my favorite ways to simplify using common cutters to avoid hand cutting. I made this entire Dora collection with readily available shapes. I’ve been called a genius, but really, it’s laziness pure and simple. It’s amazing what you can come up with when you’re trying to avoid work.

Since the cutter versions aren’t as PERFECT as a cookie cut from a printed template, I begin with the larger details {like the face and hair in Dora’s case} adapting them to the cutter. When that’s done, I use a KopyKake projector to add the facial details. To simplify even further, I try to choose images with simple expressions, like a straight line smile rather than the normal two-color, open mouthed version. It gives the same effect but with a lot less stress and color mixing.
For instructions on creating a super simple Swiper the Fox cookie, check out The Bearfoot Baker’s Fox Face Cookie tutorial. It was super easy, all I did was change up the colors a bit. In hindsight, I probably should have used royal icing to make his eyes {the real Swiper’s are a little larger} but I was out of black icing and remember that thing I mentioned about not getting hung up on the little things? Well, I had candy eyes, so, that’s what I used.
When it comes to cookies I know from experience that it’s really easy to get hung up on the small details. Try not to get too caught up in the perfection trap {if you can help it} because it can quickly suck the joy right out of decorating.
Moral of the story? When it comes to decorated cookies remember, they don’t have match perfectly to perfectly match.
Omg…that looks like it would be a nightmare to control the icing!!! For some reason I would think painter’s tape or something would HAVE to be used!! They look adorable though!!!!
Awesome set! Character cookies are super stressful – especially the eyes!
These are great! AND perfect timing; my sister is doing a Dora theme for my nieces birthday next month…I wanted to do cookies along with her cake and these are amazing! I even already ordered the cutters I would need this morning. 🙂 You are sooo talented!! Great tips!
I love these….character cookies scare the joy out of my cookie decorating experience! Thank you so much reminding us to keep them simple!
I LOVE These!
I have been trying to figure out how to do Dora cookies for the little girl I take care of!
You have answered my (and hers)prayers!!
THANK YOU!!
you make it look so easy.
You have saved me! My 2 yr old son looooooooves Dora. Of course Daddy doesn’t want to have Dora birthday party in April 😉 So we decided to do a “Boots” themed party…and I just may attempt the Boots cookies. And can I tell you that I HATE that cutter for snowmen but I’m glad I didn’t toss it because not I have a Boots cutter!! 🙂
Those are too cute. Great job!! I used your push-pin trick while creating Hello Kitty cookies earlier in the year, they turned out pretty well…but man, was that STRESSFUL! Thank goodness for your tip, though, otherwise I wouldn’t have made it at all 🙂
You are such an artist! I am so impressed!
These are awesome!! my little one loves Dora, these would be so fun and following your instructions easy to make for a party.
Hugs, thanks for sharing
I keep telling myself “This cookie is a REPRESENTATION, not a REPLICA!”
Then I search your posts! You are the absolute best.
I love “it doesn’t have to be match perfect to perfectly match!”
Your quote is going on my wall!
I love how you simplify cookies! Character cookies are super stressful; I always make extra of a design in case I mess up. But thanks for the reminder that we shouldn’t strive for perfection, they are just cookies. (PS- I wish Dora was around when I was a kid. She would have prepped me for high school Spanish.)
Great tip, as always, Callye. I’m gearing up for a Cinderella set, so it’s good to be reminded that simple is best. Plus, using unexpected cutters earns creativity points, no matter the motivation.
Awesome!! In the end, all the really matters is, if the kids recognize the characters, you are good to go!!!
I hundred percent agree! If the kiddos know what you were getting at, then you did good!
I DEFINITELY avoid character cookies. Especially since most kids won’t hesitate to tell you if they don’t look like the characters you’re going for. These are some great tips…maybe they’ll help me gather the courage to try character cookies one day!!
So, so cute!
Lazy or genius. I say genius because I’m a real lazy person & could never come up with this stuff. It’s funny because I just typed a post for tomorrow talking about how I despise character cookies.
That’s a brilliant tip for the smiles! I always get stressed out about the teeth too!
Normally, I’m not into frosted cookies, but those are ADORABLE. The tips sound great too…
CALLY TIENES UN TALENTO INCREIBLE!!! SIGO TU BLOG Y ERES UNA INSPIRACION PARA MI, TENGO ALGUNOS MESES QUE ME GUSTA MUCHO HACER GALLETAS Y REALMENTE ERES MI MAESTRO! GRACIAS POR TODOS TUS CONSEJOS. ESPERO PODER COMPARTIR PRONTO CONTIGO FOTOS DE LO QUE EH APRENDIDO. BENDICIONES 😀
they came out so great! they look awesome. great tips, i have definitely struggled with character cookies as well, but your tips are very useful. thanks for sharing!
Love these!
These are PERFECT!! So so cute. Would you believe that Lucy ALREADY loves Dora? If it’s on TV, she’s staring!!
Ruh roh! Guess I’m going to be mailing some Dora cookies to Ak in a year or two!
Your such a nice mom for doing all the characters…I’m too lazy to mix all those colours! LOL Back pack is my favourite! Awesome job!
These are great!! I feel so dumb. I made Dora cookies but never thought of using a football cutter (she said slapping herself on the forehead), I cut mine by hand.
These are wonderful, so pretty and sweet. What tip do you use for the highlight outlines? They look so fine and straight. I love all the beautiful cookies you are posting and the websites you are sharing. Thank you!
I always use a #1.5 tip for the smaller details 🙂
Not to worry; you nailed it!
Perfect as usual… So sharp and clean! I love Love LOVE your work and appreciate every post!
Thank you so much for this post. The day you posted this, I had a mother ask me to make Dora cookies for her 3 year old’s party. I hate making character cookies, cakes, or cupcakes, so I tried to talk her out of it. I ended up copying your version of Dora’s head, using buttercream, and they actually turned out okay.
I will definitely give your blog a shout out when I post my cookies on Facebook.
Thanks again for your great tutorials.

As for my comment below, it kinda looks like I’ve been drinking this afternoon (here in Greece). Actually I’ve just had a day of domestic chores, so please forgive spelling errors. Callye, what I wanted to say that was that YOU ARE SIMPLY AWESOME and I’m so inspired by your posts.
Thank you!!!

Hello I have looked online for the cutters.. where did you get them?
Hi! Love these cookies and I’m about to attempt to make them for my daughters 2nd birthday! Question…do you have any steps listed as far as the order you did the icing?
