Easy Turkey Platter
Need a last minute Thanksgiving cookie idea that will have you out of the kitchen and shaking your tail feathers in no time at all? Then this is for you!
This platter is the perfect way to make decorated cookies for a larger crowd. You can make a little or a lot without spending hours decorating.
Begin by baking a batch or two of cookies. A good way to gauge how many you’ll need is to place the cutter on the platter you plan to use to get a rough idea of how many to bake. When in doubt, make a few extra…you can use them as fillers as the cookies are eaten.
To make “feathers” I used a gum leaf cutter that was gifted to me {thanks again, Mandy and Rebecca} and smaller leaves from this set, which is available at most craft stores.
Since I planned for a larger platter I made a full-body turkey cookie for the center but you could do only a face if you like. Don’t be afraid to be creative.
Here’s a breakdown of my turkeys:
- A, 3 and 7
- B, 2 and 6
- C, 5, 2, and 1
- D, 8 and 4
Decorate the cookies as simply as possible. I used icing that was leftover from this project and twenty-second icing for the feathers.
If you have an airbrush, it’s a quick easy way to give the feathers a little more dimension. The Bearfoot Baker has a great airbrush tutorial HERE.
If you don’t have an airbrush, Karen’s Cookies sells them HERE. Now’s the perfect time to start dropping hints for Christmas.
Once the cookies the cookies are decorated and dry arrange them on a platter. A round or oval platter works best. I started by laying down a layer of crumpled plastic wrap {a genius tip I learned from Maryann} and began layering cookies.
I used smaller leaves/feathers to fill in any empty spaces. See how nicely the plastic wrap holds things in place?
Keep layering cookies until the platter is full…
Then top with a turkey!!! I made a few variations for fun, which came in handy because I was able to replace the him after he disappeared a few times. Apparently third graders have a fascination with mutilating innocent turkey cookies. Who knew?
Anywho, add a few “feathers” forwings, then prepare to “WOW” your guests!
For those of you who feel you don’t have time to decorate Thanksgiving cookies, this project is for you! It’s cute, but a little more manageable than a some of the more complex designs.
We’re already preparing for Thursdays feast at my house. What are your Thanksgiving plans? I want to hear all about them, especially if they involve food!
Have a wonderful Turkey Day my cookie friends!
I adore this idea so much, Callye!
My husband has Thanksgiving day off, but has to work the day before and after, so we’re not traveling this year. Since it is just the two of us, we’re going out to a nice restaurant. I’ll miss the cooking, but not the clean-up! 😉
I am jealous Jennifer! No DISHES!! Merry Christmas!! LOL
Me too!!!
Where did you find the leaf cutter
This is by far the cutest turkey I have ever seen! I love the colors, the feathers and the design! You are a genius! I had that cutter in my hand and all I saw was a chili pepper! LOL
That is SO cute! What a fantastic idea…love it!
LOVE this!! I already have my cookies made for this year, but I’ll tuck this idea away for next year for sure! So cute!!
This is really very clever and very cute. I don’t think I can do this in time this year, but next year I will be all over it! Thanks for sharing. As usual, your art is perfection.
CUTE! You’re so smart!!!
Cute, cute! As you know, I had the same idea, but Jack’s in charge of the feathers for ours, so who knows how it will turn out! LOL! Loooooooooove the clean lines & look of yours! ♥
I love them all! I might even be able to pull something like this off!
Wow. You are so prolific, you never stop making new cookies and sharing with us. Thanks.
Do you ever have problem with greasy cookies that leave a fat deposit on the cookie that is under it ?
Could someone sell the cookies in a platter like that and have the client pick it up like that, with some cellophane wrapping around it ?
When bringing that platter to another location (say a party) some cookies may get out of their original spot on the platter, maybe not the ones underneath with the crumpled plastic wrap, but some of the top stacked cookies. I guess all it needs is a little rearranging. But then that’s when I might find the cookies that have a little fat (butter) deposit on the icing.
This is an awesome idea. You are so creatively clever!
I think you are such an awesome decorator! I’m new to cookie decorating and while I’m no artist (at all!!!) I love following your tutorials and trying to make my cookies look like yours. Thank you so much! Your turkey platter is such an awesome idea!!
What a brilliant idea! Wish I had seen this earlier before I baked and started decorating all my cookies! 🙂
Lay down a piece of plastic to prevent cookie “slippage”… so simple, so brilliant! Thank you. Another one of my cookie problems solved by Sugarbelle!
You are a COOKIE MASTER! This is so cute.
This is so awesome!! You always amaze me.
This is so simple and it looks like fun. I want 2 try this.
How many time does it take you to bake this ?
Yes you are an artist. How you come up with these ideas I don’t know, but you always manage to make something beautiful out of a roll of dough and a few couloured egg whites! Thank you for the idea and congratulations on another gorgeous project. Happy thanksgiving!
Such an awesome idea! We don’t have thanksgiving here but I’m still going to try to recreate this! 🙂
I’m so glad you did this! I was planning a smaller version to use up some leftover cookie dough (aw, poor me, extra cookies), and I was wondering how to make that turkey. Awesome – thanks!
Forgot to mention plans: I’m so excited. My husband and I really enjoy cooking together, so we’ll be in the kitchen all morning cooking up a traditional feast. With champagne. (That’s for cooking together, great reason to celebrate!) Happy Thanksgiving, Callye!
That is so smart! Love all your tips and tricks. I will definitely be using the crumpled up plastic wrap tip!
This year I am hosting Thanksgiving for my husband’s side of the family. 25 people! 26 if you include my three month old.
I’ve made complicated turkey cookies in the past but there was no time for that this year. I made one turkey for each person and wrote their name on it so it will be the place cards. With so many other desserts one cookie per person is good enough.
You are AMAZING! I love your work so much! Very talented! I love how you link everything..like cutters, icing etc. It makes it real easy to understand what and how you did what you did! 🙂
How pretty & creative, I love the littlLe red thingy on the turkey beak, sorry I’m a city gal, I have know idea what it’s called! LOL I can see the same design on a peacock, there I just gave you some homework!!! 🙂
These cookies are so adorable! I think I need to try decorating cookies…you’ve given my inspiration! Happy Thanksgiving!
very cute!
Callye

Happy Thanksgiving, you!!!! Take pics of what you make. I WILL wanna see!
What a fabulous idea!!! Now…I’m trying to think of a way to do this for christmas – a big tree in the middle and simple square / rectangle presents around it? Or, something else…hmmmm
How simple and adorable this is ! Too late for me to do for this Thanksgiving, but will do it next year for sure !! HAPPY THANKSGIVING …
Absolutely adorable! Was just up to 3 am last night decorating 12 dozen gingerbread turkeys. Next year I will change it up a bit and do this delightful turkey!
FABULOUS!!! Happy Thanksgiving!
Absolutely amazing!!! If I stare at this LNG enough I might be able to make this next year. You are just brilliant!
W.O.W!!!!!! This display is STUNNING!! Your colors are gorgeous. The feathers are perfectly arranged and the turkey is unbelievably adorable!!!

Woww, your talent is awesome. It makes me want to have a holiday every day of the year!!! ? your work.
Thanks for this tutorial! I’m going to try the platter- what size is the turkey, about? 4 inches? Thanks!
Ooooh, no, this a big guy. I would kind of guestimate based on your platter. I gave a better visual example in this post. It should help ya: https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2012/12/easy-poinsettia-platter/
I don’t know if I gave ya the helpful link, LOL! https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2012/12/easy-poinsettia-platter/
Thank you! I ordered a 6 inch snowman with top hat. If he doesn’t work Foose has an 8 inch! lol
Yes, OR you can piece something. No matter what ya do, it will be cute as can be =)
You are so talented!!! How do you make the brown icing??? Thanks 🙂
I love this concept! Thank you for the tutorial! Do you have any ideas along these lines that could be done for a Winter or Christmas theme?

This is so pretty and a great idea!! I plan on making this. I have a few questions…..how much would you charge for a large platter like that? Yes…the elephant in the room question!! lol My next question is what is the best way to wrap this with having minimal shifting of cookies?? I usually wrap cellaphane with a pretty bow….but I think you would not be able to see the beauty of this. I was thinking shrink wrap but I don’t know how to do that! lol
Adorable! Love the feathers! So creative!!!!

I like this turkey platter cookie idea, but I have a question about something. You have the cookie cutters numbered, I imagine to you can explain how each type of turkey is made. However, I can’t figure out what two of the cutters are suppose to be. They look like a bean and a kidney to me but I doubt that’s correct. What are the cutters number 1 and 6 suppose to be?
thanks,
Pamela G
Pamela G. – I think 1 and 6 are a flip flop; cutter. Hope this helps.
