Bright and Spooky Halloween Green Icing
Around this time of year, you will probably find yourself making quite a bit of green colored icing. The great news is that it’s an easy color to make.
If you want to make things REALLY easy you can always use leaf or electric green straight from the bottle but because I like my colors to have a little more dimension, I usually mix them. Here are two combinations for Halloween green that I use often.
Bright Spooky Green: Begin with half a cup of white icing and add three drops electric green + Two drops leaf green + a touch of electric blue
Goblin Green: Begin with half a cup of white icing, add the colors used for Bright Spooky Green plus a few drops of egg yellow and/or ivory to tone it down a bit.
Leftover shades of yellow, blue and green also make a great base for Halloween green icing. I happened to have these colors on hand.
When mixed then made a very nice shade of green, but it wasn’t quite what I had in mind.
So I added a small drop of leaf green and a touch of electric blue.
Not only was the final color perfect, I didn’t waste a bit of icing.
Whether you start with white or leftover color, it’s easy to create a great shade of Halloween green. Don’t be afraid to add more icing or color when necessary. The final product will be a color completely your own.
Do you use your leftover icing to make new colors? Do you have your own special formula for Halloween green? I’d like to hear all about it.
- Global Sugar Art and Country Kitchen Sweet Art are my favorite places to shop for Americolor gel. They have a great selection and larger sizes.
- Electric colors like green, blue, and yellow work very well for brighter green shades. You should definitely try them out.

For the bright spooky green, you said to “add three drops electric green + Two drops electric green + a touch of electric blue”. That’s electric green twice, did you mean another color?
I am sorry, I meant leaf green. Its fixed now.
Great reminder to get creative with color! I never would think to add ivory, but it adds a great tone. Thanks for the great ideas!
Thanks for the tips for such a great color! I’ve gotten more adventurous with color – I’m not afraid to add a little bit of this or that to get a unique shade 🙂
So fun!
Awesome Callye! You have a great eye for color. Ever since you first talked about adding ivory I try it whenever I feel a color just isn’t working.
Something I have always wondered when you talk about mixing old icings together how do you achieve the consistencies? That all important word – consistency! Say with the one above did you get piping and flood from that as it looks rather runny? Or do you just aim for 20 second? I have been wondering about this since you Easter post using up left over icing. Thanks!
You are the person for the go to questions about icing…you have helped me in the past, and now I have another question for you, what colors would you mix to get a rich dark mauroon?…I cannot seem to get a nice dark rich color…..do you have any ideas…(I’m am sure you do)….

I was digging thru the Halloween bucket, and there was Frank, I must have bought him in the off season because he was brand new. Now I am motivated to make a few cookies!
Cutest little Frankensteins ever!
I LOVE that green…it’s perfect!!!
I have to develop my vocabulary : because always saying “gorgeous, wonderful…etc…” seems to be too insipid regarding to the marvelous cookies you bake !
Great tip I love to mix my colors to achieve a perfect hue as well. Or sometimes to use up and not waste excess left overs as well 😉
I love mixing my own colors! I do it all the time. Paint and icing are very similar. You always give great info to your readers Callye!
