Whooo’s Ready for Ha”owl”loween?
How’s that for cheesiness overload? I couldn’t help myself. I’m super ready for autumn, Halloween, and everything in between.
If you haven’t noticed, owls seem to be all the rage lately. It’s a good thing too, since I re”owl”ly like making them.
Just kidding. Let me stop while you still like me.
Anywhooooooooooooo…
These owls are so easy to make. All you need is:
- Flood and piping icing in the color/s of your choice
- White flood icing
- Large black candy beads
- Yellow 20-second icing
- Black food color gel or a black food color marker
Begin by using s smallish round or flower shaped cookie cutter to mark the eyes. This trick really takes the guess work out of piping.
Once the cookies are marked outline them using a #2 tip.
Flood then quickly use white piping icing to add dots. You now have a SPOTTED owl…
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
Fill the eyes with white flood icing the eyes then use tweezers to drop in black candy beads.
After a bit of drying time use a leaf tip to add ears {use the size best suited to the cutter you chose}.
Finally, use yellow 20-second icing to add a beak.
Let the cookies dry then use a #2 tip to add a beaded detail around the eyes.
Finish up by using a tiny brush to paint on lashes with gel color and water and add a tiny dot of white icing to the eye. This really brings cookies to life.
The moment I decided to make these cookies I knew I would use a cat face cutter, but when it came time to choose I couldn’t. So, I tried them all, plus a random caldron that I found along the way.
- c {Wilton caldron}
- b {Wilton Hello Kitty}
- f {Betty Crocker 101 piece set}
- d {Michaels, about two years ago}
- e {Wilton cat face cutter}
- a {The Cookie Cutter Company}
Whatever cutter you choose, the end result is adorable.

OOH my gosh, precious!! I love these little owls, their tiny eyelashes, and how you applied their little eyes with what looks like surgical needle holders, hahaha! 🙂
I love the dots they lift your parliament of owl cookies from lovely to spectacular also the leaf tip for the ears is a super idea.
You’re so creative… I love the leaf shapes for the ears and the beaded border. Those little extras just make the owls super cute! The one with the bow is my fav!
Gah! So cute!
So cute! A tulip cutter works great also. You just have to remove the middle petals! I am going to make these owls today!!!! Thanks for sharing:)

Question about the black pearls you use for eyes. What brand do you like? I’ve got the Wilton beads and they bleed into white icing which is incredibly sad. Do you wait a few minutes before dropping them in? Thoughts?
OMG Callye!! Just when I think you have done the cutest owl….you do an even cuter one!!! I have been on an owl kick lately. I adore these!! They will be on my Halloween To Do list!!

I have been following you for about 6 months and love your work
I live in Saint Louis, Missouri
“OWL” always love these cookies! Such a fun use of all the cutters!
Hey Sugarbelle–followed ur blog for a while. Problem though. If it were ME making these awesome owl cookies, the black pupils would eventually bleed into the white, along with many other colors on all my cookies. I NEED YOUR ADVICE–how do I stop the bleeding? Even after letting the first layer dry completely, it still happens. I still use a real egg white in my royal icing. I use Americolor brand food color. Maybe with this info you might be able to help me diagnose my problem.
I’d use a fan to dry them. I think that’s my secret of avoiding bleeding problems.
I love them!
You know cookie cutter “e” would make a great gremlin.
Awe! GIZMO!!! Genius!
Love those cookies. Are we allowed to repost it(and link to you) on our blog in october towards Halloween? We want to introduce the best Halloween cookies.

How is it possible that you remember where you bought every cookie cutter? I know you probably have 1000.
BTW – these are totally cute. 🙂
thank you so much for this tutorial! im new at cookies and just made these and with your wonderful tutorial they turned out great!!! 🙂
These are so cute! Where do you get the “large black candy beads” and is there a brand name of the candy, or maker of the black candy beads used for the eyes?
Pingback: Simple Owl Cookies
I made Elephant cookies with the flood icing and used black candy beads for the eyes. My eyes ending up bleeding into the icing and some eventually popped out. Any recommendations for the next time?
Also, I love your cookie decorations, just fabulous!
