Simple Patrick Star Cookies
Did you know that goofy old Patrick has a last name? That’s the kind of thing you learn from making him into cookies over and over again.
It’s no secret that I am not a huge fan of making character cookies, but they’re a fact of life. So instead of thinking of ways to accidentally break my arm, I decided it might be more productive to think of ways to simplify the inevitable.
Here’s my theory. Most character cookies are for kids and kids are pretty easy to please {when it comes to sweets}. They don’t care is Patrick’s eyes are perfectly proportionate or too close together. If it looks like Patrick, then it’s Patrick. That’s how I approach character cookies.
You can use the Wilton Patrick Star cutter or any star really, but I chose a candy corn cutter because it allowes for bigger details. Avoiding small details is always a good plan, especially if you’re a beginning decorator.
To make these cookies you will need:
- Red piping and flood icing
- Pink flood icing
- White 20-second icing
- Black 20-second and piping icing
Quick Tip* Outline the cookies with red, then thin the excess to make the pink and red flood icing. If you’re looking for a tasteless red, try tulip red.
Begin by outlining the cookie with red piping icing, then flood with pink. I used a #2 tip.
After flooding, quickly use red flood icing to make a few random dots on Patrick’s face. This is called the wet-on-wet technique. After adding the dots, let the cookies dry completely. Overnight is best.
The next day, add a few small facial details. I used a #1.5 tip to add the eye brows and smile and white 20-second icing for eyes.
After the white is dry {about an hour} add pupils using black 20-second icing. If you’re worried about bleeding, use the fan trick. It really works.
These were the very first Sponge Bob cookies I ever made, oh so many years ago.
This is today’s version. I prefer the look of the updated version hands down and they were MUCH easier to make.
I’ve said it once and I will say it again. You don’t have to kill yourself to make cute cookies. Masterpieces are always fun but save those for events where they won’t be demolished in thirty seconds or bitten once and thrown in the trash.
- If you want to simplify things even further try adding pink color to the dough before baking, and pipe the facial features on top.
- To make my interpretation of Patrick’s shorts, you can learn how I made the flowers in this post.
I’ve been known to look forward to Friday, but this week I will be happier than usual to see it. The first week back to school may have been harder on me than the kids. I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing weekend.
Happy Baking!
Super cute!! I used that cutter today too 😀 for the normal, boring use!
OMG! These are so cute, thanks so much for sharing, I always stayed away from character cookies because of the details and felt like cheating if I used shortcuts like tinting the dough. Not any more. And what about Patrick’s last name, is it Star?
Yes, lol! And Squidward Tentacles, and Eugene Crabs, and Sandy Cheeks, and Sheldon Plankton. I cannot believe I know this, lol!!!
haha! Is it a coincidence that Crusty Crab lives in biking bottom????
Callye, we talked about ‘simple’ cookies at Spring Fling.!
I’m all about simple!
hence the website.
Umm, meant, bikini bottom!
I love the colors of that platter! Patrick and SpongeBob never looked better 🙂
Patrick is so stinking cute!! I think he can be an Egg-Head also!! LOL
oh my gosh. almost my favorite kid’s show!! LOVE patrick star too 🙂 so cute!!
A candy corn – genius! I have the Wilton set, but I’ve never had anyone request Spongebob cookies yet, so they’re just sitting there useless. Now, I’ll want to use something else anyway, and they’ll be even MORE useless! 😉
Patrick has a last name?(I see that it’s “Star” in one of the comments:)) Now, that’s some heavy-duty trivia! I think your Patrick has the sweetest face! 🙂
You’re so creative, thank you and congratulations!!!!
the color is perfect. Looks really easy.
love those, I so wanted to have a sponge bob party for my son, but he was never into him enough:( Oh well, at least I can still love sponge bob.
There’s just something about cookies with bulging eyes that make them extra cute!
Love these cookies even if I don’t kow who Patrick is! I did find out that Spongebob was not cheese the first time I made him. 🙂
Wow!!!! Beautiful colors and lovely biscuits.
These are too cute!
Awesome idea!! You are amazing! Still waiting on you to come help me with that branch! 😉
I’ll be there ASAP! Leaving shortly 🙂
Excellent ! My children would not permit me to eat them 😉
SweetSugarBelle,
When I see your cookies, I want one so badly!!!!!!!!
The images and pictures you take are sooooo inviting and show the shiny goodness of the cookies! Mmmmmmmmm, they look delish! If anyone ever takes a bite and throws it in the garbage (as you mentioned) scream…..HOW COULD YOU????????? I would scream that for you!
You make me want to bake and decorate RIGHT now! 🙂
Hugs,
Patti
Ok, so keep in mind I’m probably more emotional than usual with my Nicky going away to college, but I actually cried tears when I saw the ending of your post saying that you were so excited that it was Friday and that back to school was harder on you than the kids. ADORABLE! Oh and I love the Sponge Bob and Patrick cookies. I’ve yet to try to make them! Thanks for sharing your awesome ideas.
Oh how timely… I am working on my first SpongeBobs right now! This is one of those moments I am wishing for a little fairy dust for just half of your talent!
Your amazing!
Love these! My youngest son is going to want me to make them if he sees them, LOL!
so my age is showing…I’m thinking who is Patrick? I have to say I have never seen this show, but I need to find it online to see what it’s all about. The cookies are sure adorable!
Wow, these cookies are so cute! I love them all. You’re an artist! I love reading your blog and see your lovely cookies :)) xoxo
Hi,
I love the idea of simple cookies. They are just wonderful.
Will you be showing us how to make the sponge bob cookie as well?? I would love to see those.
Keep up the wonderful work.
Love Vishanna
I love how you simplified the cookies. Your first Sponge Bob cookies are spectacular but there is something about the new simplified design that makes them really pop. They just look fun, colorful and cheerful.
Like Susie, I’m not familiar with Patrick but that doesn’t matter. I know a cute cookie when I see one 🙂 Love your colour shades in this collection.
Sugarbelle you rock! ur very talented, and creative! AWESOME!! WORK!!! Do you seel ur cookies??Is it a liscenced bussiness?? OPEn to the Public???reason..asking…Is because..I’m getting into doing cupcakes and cookies..{I use to be a cake Decorator for 7 years in a bakery} and reason I’m asking is i see a lot of blogs making copy right cookies like sponge bob….and the Lorax…I know if one isn’t licsenced its not a big deal…But, how does one get around that?? if they are Liscenced to sell??????Cause I know alot of people ask for characters like hello kitty…..I know when I cake Decorated….The company I worked for had to get written permission to use cartoon characters and such…any help would greatly be appreciate! Thankyou! again..I olove ur tutorials and ur Blog! one the best..I’ve ever read!!! YOU GO GIRL!!! p.s.. Autumn is alos my favorite season!!! =)
Good day! I keep wondering, every time I finished decorating my cookies, my cookies became soft and not crispy anymore. Its of course being expose to air for quite sometimes awaiting for the royal icing to dry. And royal icing takes quite sometimes to get dry. Please assist me here…any trick? Sorry for my bad English, I’m from Malaysia. BTW, I love your works! Thanks ya!
Is it very humid where you are? It seems like the cookies are absorbing moisture from the air. Maybe if you could dry them in the oven with just the light on, that would help. Don’t forget to take them out before you preheat your oven to make more cookies! Fans, heaters and de-humidifiers are all suggestions I’ve read. It’s not humid where I live so I haven’t had to try one yet. Good luck.
I live in West Texas…almost the desert. The fan gives the icing a much shinier finish rather than matte. I have a friend that uses her oven and loves it. Really it’s just personal preference.
Well, thanks for your reply. Ermm…i dont think its humid here in Malaysia…well of course it is during rain season. But its not, temperature everyday is around 36-37d… when i do my decorating works with fan on, the cookies will get soft even faster… pity me…they look nice but people will role their eyes when they bite my cookies…what is cookie of it’s not crispy right? 🙁
I think the moisture from the icing might soak into your icing. Perhaps if you set them on a rack so that the bottoms are exposed?
I love these cookies so much that I’ve made them twice! Even just looking at this page makes me happy.
I have a question, though, and I hope that somebody can help. Every time I make my buggy cartoon eyes (on these or other cookies) the black pupil eventually becomes a hole in the eyeball. It’s like the black piping eats into the eyeball. This is guaranteed to happen on the blue eyes, and will happen maybe %80 of the time if the pupil is on brown eyes or directly on the white eyeball.
I’ve tried using both Wilton and Americolor black. I’ve tried starting the color process with plain white icing and adding black color; starting with colored icing and adding black; starting with colored icing, adding cocoa powder, and then adding black; I’ve tried piping the black onto moist white, and onto dry white: all the same situation. No other colors do this.
Does anyone know why this happens?
Your colors are so awesome! just wow!
These cookies, compared to your first ones, demonstrates the less is more rule perfectly! The first ones, though highly detailed and undoubtedly painstaking to make, really don’t hold a candle to the gorgeous simplicity of your updated Spongebob and Patrick platter. The cookies even look happier 😀 Plus, I love that you chose to include Spongebob’s eyelashes in the new ones, because he needs them! ? Love your work.
I just found you yesterday when I searched google images for royal icing Christmas cookies for my fb cover image, and found one of your Christmas platters. Beautiful. And yes, I credited you in the photo’s description ^_^
