Nerdy Bookworm Cookies
It’s official. I have nerd humor. I literally laughed all day about these cookies then proceeded to bombard every social network I know with my little joke. Laugh with me. Really…it validates me. And if you don’t think it’s funny, PRETEND to laugh. That’s all I need.
Seriously, though, I try to stay away from super-detailed cookie how-to’s, but this one was too fun to keep to myself. I’ve had so much fun with them, I’ve made them twice!
As I always say, there is more than one way to approach any cookie design. When writing cookie tutorials, I try to make them attainable for people who don’t own a Kopykake projector. If you are lucky enough to own one it’s totally okay to skip the transfer step and use it for glasses.
All of you non-Kopykakers will have to start a day or two ahead of time by making royal icing glasses transfers. To make these you will need:
- black piping icing
- light blue 15-20 second icing
- white/off-white piping icing {optional}
To make royal icing transfers, start with my printable templates which you can find HERE. Choose the glasses style of your choice, print and place underneath a sheet of waxed paper then secure to a cookie sheet with painters tape.
At this point use black piping icing to outline the frames. Let dry, then fill with light blue 20-second icing. Use a toothpick to pop and stray air bubbles that might appear AND to eliminate cratering. To avoid bleeding, use an oscillating fan to dry them. It works, I promise.
If you’d like to add the little tape detail, do this after the transfer has had a few minutes to set. I used ivory icing with a #2 tip.
Give the transfers AT LEAST 24 hours to dry then carefully peel them off of the waxed paper. Be very gentle, they will be fragile. Once the transfers are dry, you’re ready to decorate.
To decorate nerdy bookworm cookies you will need:
- Royal icing transfer glasses
- Green piping and flood icing
- Red piping and flood icing
- Thinnish black piping icing
- White 20-second icing
Begin with a simple snowman cookie. I found my cutter on Ebay, but you can also get simple snowman cutters from Copper Gifts and Plastics In Print. Either would work very well for this.
Outline the cookie and fill the cookie in alternating sections, beginning with the middle, letting it dry for a bit, then moving on to the head and tail.
After filling the head, quickly drop a transfer onto the wet icing. Use black icing to carefully apply pupils. If you’re feeling frisky, add little glares to the lens and eyes with white icing. Let the cookie dry.
One the base is dry more detail can be added. Start with a sweet little smile, then move on the finishing touches. I went with books and apples. The book was simple to make. I used a #44 tip to make a line down the center section {a #2 or #3 will work also} then a #1.5 to add the rest of the cover. Once the book is outlined, fill it with icing. Don’t let the book scare you. It’s really nothing more than a “V” shape connected by two lines.
Finish up by adding pages, fingers, and other details like a leaf-tip bow.
The possibilities are endless, really…
Mix them with other fun school cookies and you have a party!
It’s funny that the gal who loathes graduation cookies is so into school themed cookies, but I love them {if you can’t tell}. Seriously though, make them for the bookworm in your life soon. They will love you for it. I promise.
Have a great Friday everyone. Woo hoo for the weekend!

Love, love, LOVE these! I have just the bookworms to make these for! Thanks so much for your amazing tutorials. You make me look good when I bring cookies. Woo-hoo! LOL! I have to make a big batch of the glasses because I want to stick them on everything now. Too cute!

Amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing!!!!!!! Use upside down snowmen? Love it!!!
Cute! Where are the pocket protectors? 🙂 Can’t imagine a time I might need to make these, but you never know.
First, I love that you googled “nerdy glasses.” Second, I love all the details! I love that you can add them — or not– and they are fantastic cookies either way. And third — oh my goodness I love those squatty little pencils!! SO CUTE!
They are awesome!!!!! 😀
These blow me away!! Thanks for such a great tutorial! The pencils are so cool. What cutter did you use for them?
CUTE doe not begin to describe these cookies. To say I love them is an understatement.
Good morning,
I was wondering what tip you used for making the hair bows? Also, your RI looks so soft and cusiony when dried on the cookies, do you add corn syrup? My cookie icing dries a bit “flat” and doesn’t look as pretty as yours. Any suggestions?
Thanks again for all your guidance,
Lori
I love it when your inner nerd emerges! ha ha And you know you come by it naturally. Your brothers, your dad, you…well what can I say? There had to be some normalcy in the family so I keep my inner nerd hidden. But I really like school supplies. Hmmm…leaking out alert! ha ha
My son just told me “…HEY ! We won’t eat them, I hope ???!!” 😉
You did it again! Genius designs!!!
Cutest things EVER!! Very creative. ?
So adorable! Did you have a custom cookie cutter for the word balloon?
Here’s what I did https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/blog/2012/08/pencil-and-thought-bubble-cookies/

There are so many things about these that are great…but I love the little fingers the best!!!
I thought I would take a quick mental break and pop on to see what you have been up to and just got the biggest smile on my face! Callye, you are hilarious! Such the cute design and (of course) perfectly executed! Love, love these!
This assortment is flipping adorable–no other way to describe it other than fabulous!
Adorableee! I have got to agree with you that nerds are better than Calvin Klein models any day 🙂
So cute! I love these!
That is absolutely hysterical. I will be giggling all day.

Love how you can get the round edges so perfectly round! Any tips on doing that?
I always ruin the look of my cookies when I have to do round borders 🙁
These are just too cute, the glasses are adorable! As always, wonderful attention to detail!
I wore glasses for years until I convinced my dad to let me get contacts when I was 17. I wish I had looked this cute in glasses. I love the girl with her little bow!
These might be my favorite cookies EVER. (Do I say that on ALL of your posts?!?) 😉
absolutely adorable

Thanks for the great tutorial, I added this design to my niece’s 8th grade graduation cookies.
My girlfriend recently (OK… back in November) had a baby shower and asked me to make her cookies. Her theme was “book worms” and I was at a loss. Luckily, Google directed me to you — and I have to say, I think I am in love (cue magical music here)! These little bookworm cookies are incredibly cute. While my finished product did not look as perfect as your’s, they certainly were a hit. Thank for you sharing all of your ideas and the helpful hints that come along with them. I am a self-taught “baker-on-the-side” and appreciate your honesty and helpful posts.
I have been regularly popping in to see what new things you’ve been coming up with. I’m hooked — and I wish I lived closer (I’m in NY) so I could order and – more importantly – eat your beautiful creations!
