Using a Kopykake Projector
Do you know what this is? This here is a Kopykake projector. You may or may not have have already heard of Kopykake projectors and might even be lucky enough to own one. But, if you haven’t, listen up. This is important stuff.
When I first got into the cookie thing, I’d never heard of a Kopykake. As a matter of fact, I cookied for almost a year before I got wise. It took another six months and a bad night with Princess Tiana before I finally decided to buy one. I was really nervous about spending a ton of money on a cookie machine, so I hesitantly bought the cheapest one available {at the time}. A couple of years later I can honestly say it’s one of the best cookie investments I’ve ever made. Kopykakes aren’t miracle machines and there is a little bit of a learning curve, but they really are an invaluable decorating tool.
As I mentioned, the KR-100 was the least expensive option at the time, so I went that route. However, if I had it to do over I would go with the 300XK model, like the one below. This one actually belongs to my buddy Lisa, The Barefoot Baker. I had the opportunity to try it while visiting her last year, and I like it a little more than the model I have.
If you want to go all out, you could definitely get the K1000 model, which uses two 250 watt bulbs instead of just one. However, since it’s about double the cost of the others, unless you find a great deal, I’m not quite sure it’s worth the extra dough.
Now for the fun stuff. This is what the inside of a Kopykake looks like. There are clamps to hold the image, a bulb {it came with a 300 watt bulb, but I use a 200 now and it works just fine}, and a mirror to project. The neat thing about this model is that you can place books over the open projector door to project images without tearing them out.
To use a Kopycake, you must first prepare the image you want to use. It can be clip art, words written in a specific font, or even a pattern. The key that the image is as clear as possible so it projects well. If you’re using an image, you can often simplify it with photo to pencil sketch web apps like this one. I learned this trick from One Tough Cookie, Gail, the queen of practical cookie decorating tips.
Before printing, try to get the image as close to actual size as possible. You can then use the lens for any final adjustments that might be needed. I don’t have a reduction lens {I don’t think they’re really necessary}, so I do most of the work before I print. There are about a gazillion and one ways to do this, which we will talk about later. Until then use the method works best for you.
Once the image is ready, open the cover and clamp the image inside. It needs to be placed upside down so that it will project right side up.
Close the cover and turn on the machine. You should see the image projected on the surface below.
Place a cookie on the work surface and move the lens up and down until the image is properly positioned.
Finally, pipe the image. I use different consistencies and tips depending on the look I want. It may take a little practice before you learn how to do this without your hand or shadows getting in the way, but don’t give up. It gets easier, I promise.
Remember, you can project almost anything if it’s clear. I’ve done words, characters, and patterns.
I have heard people say that using a Kopykake is cheating but this is simply not true. Just like any tool, it takes a fair amount of skill and planning to use it to it’s full potential. There is always more to learn. There are several informative Kopykake articles floating around in Internetland. Here are a couple of my favorites:
- Decorating Cookies with a Kopykake Projector via Sweetopia
- How to use a Kopykake Projector {VIDEO} via Cristin’s Cookies
- Writing on a Cookie With a Kopykake Projector via Simply Sweets by Honeybee
- Kopykake Pictorial via Cookie Crazie
Although I love my Kopykake, I don’t recommend them for everyone. They are bulky and expensive, so if you aren’t making lots of cookies, they aren’t really practical. If you look closely at the photo of my Kopykake, you can actually see a dusty hand print on the lid. That’s because before this post it was sitting in my storage room gathering dust. These days, it’s almost not worth the trouble of dragging it out for a few cookies.
If a Kopycake isn’t for you, there are other ways to transfer images to cookies. Here are a few of my favorite tips:
- Use a stencil. I have posts HERE, HERE, and HERE and a video HERE that show you how.
- Write directly on the cookie and pipe around it like I did HERE.
- Use the pushpin trick to pre-mark your cookies. For the tutorial, click HERE.
- Pre-mark cookies using a cutter to make impressions like I’ve done HERE.
- Use royal icing transfers. Haniela’s, The Bearfoot Baker, and Oh, Sugar Events all have great information on these.
- Easy Transfer Technique via Klickitat Street
- NYC Cookies using Tracing Paper via Sweet Ambs
If you’re still trying to decide whether or not to buy a Kopykake you can read my take on the pros and cons by clicking HERE. There’s also the option of an edible image printer, which Bridget explains HERE.
If you’re in the market for a Kopykake of your own, you may want to check out Jerry’s Artarama. Not only are the prices low, they frequently offer coupons and free shipping promotions. Right now, if you use the 10% coupon and free shipping promo, you can purchase the 300XK model for about $167 dollars. That’s a DEAL!
This is a ton of information, so I’ll let you chew on it awhile, but stay tuned, because I have a few Kopykake tricks that I cannot wait to share.
Have a great week, everyone!
My friend has one that I can borrow, then perhaps I can finally make a decision! I think I would love it!
I do too…when I finally got the hang of mine, I was like WHY DIDN’T I DO THIS TWO YEARS AGO!!!
I’ve been brewing a post about this in my mind for some time. Yes, the KK is a tool, but it is definitely not “doing the work for you,” by ANY means. If you can’t pipe a straight line on your own, the KK is unlikely to help much. You do have to have a fair amount of skill already. And if you don’t, your work can still look like crap. Uniform finally, yes, but still crap.
BUT… it’s invaluable when working massive orders or characters (even if just for the outline). I love mine, but I certainly wish there was a KK fairy that would prep all my images. 😉
I wanted one of these so bad and my amazing and creative hubby created a faux Kopy cake for me. I have a projector that hooks to my computer for presentations and he built a PVC pipe frame and I use it almost weekly now. So essentially, the cost was about $5 for the pipe and $10 for the cutting board it is mounted to because I had the projector… and it works great. I love that I can grab an image and throw it in a word doc or paintshop program and tweek it to fit what I need. i wish I could post a picture for you! The extra bonus is that I can break it down an store it away under the bed.
Laura I would LOVE to see your home-made one. I don’t decorate enough to buy one.
Great post though Sugarbelle.
Susie
I posted a picture on her facebook page
Thank you!!! That’s awesome!!!
I’ve heard tales of this type of rig…y’all are really encouraging me to sell my KK and go that route. It’s wouldn’t be a hard sell for my hubs because it’s something he could use too…hummmm….
Do you have a picture your projector and how you use it?
I know this post is SUPER old but I would love to see this picture and know how you did this. if you have time can you please email me the info please [email protected] THANKS
Thank you so much for posting this–I am going to look at a used KK today and had so many questions that you have answered! I think my decision will be easier now 😉 Looking forward to your next posts with all the tricks- Thanks again!
How do you sign up to get email notification of comments??????????
Thanks,
Susie
I don’t know, SP, I gotta check on that one for ya!
I have the K1000 and don’t use it much. I bought it when the images were still on cards. Now I have a new reason to use it, COOKIES!! Thanks so much, you inspire me!
Great post! I actually scored the white one you have pictured above for $89! That makes it a sweet deal. There was a $250 gift certificate for $89 on Groupon for Jerry’s Artarama. So keep your eyes peeled. Now, I don’t feel so guilty if I don’t use it everyday! I mostly use it for writing. Now, i just need to master the PME 00 tip!
Super tip! Thanks so much for sharing!!!
I really wish I had one, especially for writing. Maybe when I grow up.. I’ll get one.
I don’t think you’ll regret it, Hani!
Nice post and very informative. I have mixed emotions about the projector though. I’m old school and like to do things the old fashioned way ~ eyeballing and freehand. If you’re doing lots of cookies, I would think it would be such a pain to move each and every one under the projector. Too much handling for me. But then again, I no longer decorate cookies, so what do I know? LOL
That’s the pitfall Renee. I always worry that mine makes me LAZY…I don’t mind moving cookies so much, what bugs me most is working with the lights off, believe it or not!!!
I got a KK a couple months ago and it helps me tremendously, since I can’t draw at all 🙂 I like using stencils too.
And, I totally second you on Jerry’s Artarama. Not only do they offer coupons, they sometimes do Groupons too! I got my KK at Jerry’s for less than $100 that way 🙂
I’ve gotta learn more about Groupons!!!
I don’t have a KK but, like Laura, use a computer projector. (Mine’s currently on a ladder-rig, so I’d like to see that PVC rig, too!) The best part about the projecter is the ability to to adjust sizing and shift from one image to the next quickly. Being able to produce detailed, accurate images with less stress is THE reason to use a projector!
I’ve been considering making this switch for eons…y’all are making me want to take the plunge!
I haven’t decorated a cookie in forever but you have convinced me I need one of these!!
I have the 300 XK. I must say I only used it twice and found it very difficult. It was hard to get the image to be clear and also, like you mentioned, I had a hard time with the hand/shadow thing. You have inspired me to try again.
Your tutorials are simply amazing. They are the most detailed of any other. Thanks so much for all you do for us all.
Pam, when I got mine I was SOOOOOO disappointed! I was so nervous about spending the money then I got it and I felt like I’d wasted almost $200!!! I literally thought iT was junk and put it in the closet with plans to Ebay it…but I tried it again (I might have been desperate) and finally it clicked. I’ll never be a fan of working in the dark but there are times that I could actually hug it, now!
I originally wished for a KK but since I live in Taiwan, it wasn’t practical to ship one over and where would I store it? Instead my husband surprised me by getting me a mini projector that’s just a little bigger than an iPhone. It has a rechargeable battery (although the battery life isn’t great… but it also works while plugged in.) and it takes an SD card, so it doesn’t need to be connected to a computer to use. It has a flexible mini tripod so I just attach it to the handles of my kitchen cupboards. It’s been really helpful and I’m glad it’s so tiny. I love it! I would definitely recommend it!
oh my gosh i love kitchen gadgets!! this is amazing!
I have been wanting a kk for almost 2yrs now but cant convince myself i absolutely need it! I have heard of people using a tracer jr image projectir! Im thinking of maybe looking into that and see what exactly it does! Its compact … so thats a plus, and on ebay they start at about $20-$25…may be a cheaper alt! :)) for now ill keep dreaming about a kk! 🙂
Just ordered it and I can’t wait to try it out. Thank you for the awesome tutorial. You really make it look so easy.
Really helpful post! Thank you! I don’t have a KK and still can’t convince myself I need one. But it would be great to be able to trace my on drawing on cookies…
Yamina,
That’s what I use mine for most often. That and writing. I can do it without but it takes so long and I’m so tense afterward that I almost have a headache. If you can get one, I highly reccomend them!
Great post Callye. I bought my Kopykake (300 XK) from Madison Art Shop out of New Jersey and I have never regretted the decision. I find it an invaluable decorating tool when having to do character cookies. Once I learned to keep my head and hands out of the way of the image I thought it was the best investment in cookie decorator supplies I have ever made. I rarely decorate the entire cookie using the Kopykake though and mostly use it just to trace the image onto all the cookies and then I just finish icing them all at my dining room table. For me, that method is much quicker than decorating one cookie at a time on the Kopykake.
Now that’s a great tip, Paula!!
Love to you!
I love this tip…that’s the way I did the patterned cookies above. It never occurred to me to do it for a font! Good thinking!
Thank you for the reco for Jerry’s! You’re absolutely right (about all things cookies!) about the price – cannot beat it!
I am also delighted to know Jerry’s is right here in NC and very close to where I am, (Raleigh is only 50 mins from Winston-Salem, where I live!) Anyway, I’ve just ordered the 300XK, although I would have preferred the model you have, since being able to project images from books (without removing the pages/having to copy them) sounds like a feature to have. Nevertheless, the price for the 300XK is less than the K1000 so I went for that one. I always follow your advice about cookie creating… Why it’s taken me nearly 3 years to finally take the plunge on your KopyKake suggestion, only price can explain! 🙂
Keep up the great work – I wish you continued perfect health and happiness always!
xo
For the next two years after completing a project you’re going to look back like me and say now why didn’t I buy this years ago, lol!
Holy smokes, that’s really clever!
Thank you so much for sharing the website with the saving code and free shipping. I just went a bought it. I have been thinking about getting it for a long time, this is such a great price that I couln’t wait any longer.
As usual ,your post are so informative.
Thank you
You will love it Kathia!!! I promise!
I just recently found your blog and wanted to thank you for all your tips and suggestions! I also switched to your sugar cookie recipe and love it so much better than what I was using before! So thank you!!!
Wow! Definitely out of my realm! You cookie decorating queens have all the fun! 🙂
Great info. I have always “kinda” wanted one, but haven’t been able to bring myself to pay the money for something that I’ve seemed to get along fine without. And then its another item I have to find place to store, and my house is so little. Maybe someday….. 😉
Hi there!
Thanks so much for this post. I have been decorating cookies for about a year and a half now, and although I feel my skills are improving a “little”…I still always wondered how all of the cookie “greats” piped such amazing designs, fonts, and pictures onto their cookies. “They must just have mad skills that I will never attain”, I thought. But then after talking to one of the “greats”, she simply explained to me that so many use a KopyKake! Aha moment! I casually mentioned to my husband how this would broaden my “cookie horizons” and he immediately went to work, researching them online! He bought me one from Jerry’s Artarama just as you suggested! We got quite a deal PLUS FREE shipping! Thanks so much for this post and for the recommendation of Jerry’s! Mine is set to be delivered on Monday and I can’t wait to broaden my skills! Cookie hugs! Melody from Sweet Ivy Confections
Yep, I’m a newbie and I get on here quite a bit….I toggle between several diffrent websites….i’m still learning the ins and outs of royal icing….i made some the other day it was like “airy and puffy” like a marshmallow! Way too poofy and not thick nough…..i don’t thnk…I am not ure what to do about left over flow icing…it seems to separate and then I try to mix it again…should i throw it out?
I have had this on my wishlist for a while, I think you have just pushed me over the edge…in a kinda good way. Think I’m doin’ it.
Do it, do it, do it!!!
Wow! The people who say this is cheating are just plain stupid!!! You can totally tell that this also another art form! Hell I would love to just turn on the machine and pipe away on the first try but duh that isn’t going to happen, its a lot of practice and patience. Thank you for sharing! When my kids go back to school I will be trying my hand at cookie making 🙂 and it’s people like you who share that I feel like I will be able to accomplish it ..so thank you!!!
Mandy
You can do it!!!

It sounds great, but I don’t think a KopyKake is worth it for me.
Thank you for all your other image transferring tips as well 🙂
While I don’t have a KopyKake, I do have an Artograph, which does the same thing. I *LOVE* my Artograph, it’s great for cookies as well as my cakes!! Now I can do the school logo cookies a lot more easily, and my writing on my cakes is now centered and legible… laugh!! My mom bought my Artograph off of Amazon for my Christmas present, and I think it ended up being cheaper than a KK. You might look at the Artograph if you have problems finding a KK.
Which brand Artograph do you use? I am really debating on purchasing the KK and if artograph does the same thing them I’ll give it a try
I have had the opportunity to use both the Artograph and the KK. In my humble opinion I really felt like the Artograph was much more precise and the lense both enlarges and reduces simply by pulling it all the way out and flipping it over. The only thing I really liked about the KK was the table that it’s already attached to. Although I just had my husband make one for my AG to stay on, instead of occupying my dining room table during family meals because I was to lazy to unscrew it 🙂 Another thing I found was the AG wasn’t that difficult to read in a well lit room. I almost always had to turn the lights out and/or wait till later in the evening to use it. Mine is the Artograph Design Master. *hope this helps 🙂
Thanks for all of the information and the links! I ordered a KK from Artarama last week. What a great deal! While I don’t do a ton of cookies, I do make lots and lots of cakes and occasionally cookies. The last time I made Toy Story cookies, I had to outline with an edible marker then pipe. Just a couple of days ago I made Mickey and Minnie cookies and WOW!….this helped so much! This saved me so much time!!! While, yes, it was a little pricey compared to many of my tools, this will save me a ton of time which is priceless! And you are completely right….there is a learning curve. I knew going in that it was going to take a little getting used too, so I certainly was not disappointed. Now I can’t wait to make a ton more cookies!!!! Thanks again!
I just want to repeat most of Olivia’s comments being thanks for all of the information and the links! I ordered a KK from Artarama yesterday July 25the after putting it in the shopping cart on their website last week and thinking about the price. I am so excited now and can’t wait for the arrival of my KK. It truly is a great deal! Can you or anyone out there recommend a good quality airbrush system – not too pricy? Thanks again you are the best!
WOW! What fun that is!

Dear Santa …. 😉
Not sure if I can find this in France but I am going to start hunting !
I just ordered a KK-300XK today from amazon.com. It will be here tomorrow! I have contemplated purchasing this as I just did not make THAT many cookies. Designs are complicated AND you can spend a lot of time tracing, piping, etc. I value my time. I get a little frustrated with the number of “touches” I have to make to a cookie prior to completion. I usually charge per “touch” (LOL). (Example: 6-“touch” cookie: bake cookie, take cookie out oven, trace with edible pen, trace with icing, fill with icing, move to dry table, bag). Basically, I want a FANtastic cookie, EVERY time! This will do it!
I’m just “googling” and found your page and the information has been very helpful! I cannot wait to read more of the “here” segments later tonight.

Hi, I was wonder if you have info about where to get the bulbs for the Kopykake. I mean cheap price and reliable shipping. Is there a saving energy bulb that we can use in a Kopykake instead of those short life regular bulbs (20 hours – 250 watts – A23 eca). Thank you for your help.
Victoria
Thank you for the how-to. This helps a lot. I have a KR-100 and couldn’t make heads or tails of it.

I am also wondering about the bulbs. I own the 300xk and my bulb just went out. Can you use a standard household bulb?

Hello! I’m interested in buying a kopykake! I looked on the website you had attached and it is selling for around $160. Is there attachments or “accessories” I have to have? OR Do I just buy it as is!! Thanks Sydnie

I still haven’t decided if I should invest in a projector. I am rebelling against the “perfect” cookie because… It’s not the Sistine Chapel, it’s a cookie. But I see perfect fonts and characters and I’m tempted.

Where do you find quality images for KK?
My dad just finished building one for me today made out of styrofoam board and it works really well. I haven’t used it to decorate cookies yet, I’m trying it tomorrow but I was tracing on paper with it to test it out. You can even adjust the size of the image. I just can’t justify spending so much on something that I wouldn’t use often. My dad made it for under $10. He said eventually he will make one out of wood but for now, I’m very happy with it! If you can’t afford one then try making it. There is a tutorial online but she uses cardboard boxes.
