Simple Strawberry Shortcake Cookies
My days of decorating cookies for profit really turned me on to appeal the of simple cookie designs. I’ve said it before, and I will say it again. Cookies do not have to perfectly match to match perfectly. So what if you can’t quite master Strawberry Shortcake’s face as a cookie? These are just as adorable and easy enough for a beginner.
Believe it or not I have a Strawberry Shortcake cookie cutter. The story of how I acquired it is almost unbelievable.
One Saturday the family and I were walking around the mall we we passed a fountain. Of course, my kiddos ran over to check it out {teetering dangerously close to the edge, I might add} when my oldest yells, “Mom, there’s a cookie cutter in this fountain.”
At first, I thought my obsession hobby had finally warped him too, but as we got closer I could see that he was right. Floating in that sparkling blue fountain was a cookie cutter. After a few minutes of begging, I finally talked my husband into fishing it out. I mean, it must have been a sign that I would find a cookie cutter floating in a mall fountain, right?
Turns out, McDonalds was giving away Strawberry Shortcake cookie cutters as Happy Meal Prizes and was probably tossed there by some disgruntled kid expecting an action figure. I prefer to believe God put it there just for me.
Anywho, in a perfect world it would have been some enchanted cutter that kept me from ever making another ugly cookie, but after using it a few times it turned out to be a lot less cooler than I initially thought. It’s pretty small and dough tends to get stuck in the stem. Regardless, it made for a good story and gave me another idea for simple Strawberry Shortcake cookies. So, even if you didn’t stumble upon a SS cutter in you local mall fountain, you probably already own the cutters you will need to make these cookies.
I like that my version has a little extra stem space to work with.
To decorate these cookies you will need:
- White piping icing and a #3 tip
- green flood icing
- red and pink flood icing
- white flood icing {only a tiny bit}
Begin by outlining the cookie with white piping icing.
After the outline has dried, use green flood icing to fill the stems and let dry for an hour or so.
Finally flood the strawberry and quickly drop dots of white into the wet icing. This is called the wet-on-wet technique.
Let the cookies dry and mix with other Strawberry Shortcake themed cookies. I like the simple five-petal flower and her little legs, which are a great alternative to an actual character cookie
You can find the five-petal flower cutter at Global Sugar Art and for the legs, I used this bread cutter from Off the Beaten Path. To make the legs I followed my Witch Leg Cookie tutorial, this time adding a skirt, and making the legs wider near the bottom.
I am a big believer of simple cookies, specifically when it comes to kid’s. For more simple kid-cookie ideas be sure to check out these fun posts:
Aww I just love SSC ! That little cookie cutter was meant to be in your hands =D
love this and the thought of finding a cookie cutters of all things OMG. The Lord knows your heart!
Lovely! I have that little blue star cutter – it is the perfect size for so many things! 🙂
I am not sure I could love and adore you any more!! These are just too cute!! Love the colors and love your style. Great collection!
These are too cute!
I actually just bought that same SSC strawberry cookie cutter! 35cents at a thrift store (new in the bag). I haven’t used it yet, but I made strawberry cookies once before and used an acorn cookie cutter – it forced my leaves on top to be too flat, so I wanted to try something different.
So CUTE! I love the SSC cookies but the fountain and the cutter have become my favorite Cookie Cutter Story!! You are so talented that cookie cutters are begging you to use them!!! LOL
Perhaps the cutter you fished out of the fountain had more magic than you give credit. Your tremendous vision and ability to piece cookies together came from somewhere. I appreciate your simpler designs that look so fabulous when displayed . . . Just like these strawberries, legs, and flowers. Sweet and simple and sensational.
So adorable!
super cute and the story of your cutter is funny too:)
these are so so cute! I love strawberry shortcake…just found my doll at my moms last year!
Only YOU would find a cookie cutter in a fountain!! That is too hilarious.
Also…I LOOOOOOVE Strawberry Shortcake. When I was a kid, the figurines smelled, and I’d scratch and sniff them all day while I was playing. Is that weird?
Love these cookies!! Gorgeous!!
Your cookies always make me smile but I had to tell you that today’s just melted my heart! There’s something about Strawberry Shortcake that makes me feel like a kid again, I can’t wait to find a reason to make these with my daughter!
These are adorable!
Loved that you used a star cutter to make the top of these strawberries. So cute.
I love your blog! I love your cookie designs! Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful tips and stories. 🙂
These are just darling!
I love the story on how you found the cutter in the fountain. I’m giggling at you and your husband having a discussion in the mall on how and why you needed to rescue the cutter from its watery death. Although it’s a great cutter, the improvised egg and star cutter do it for me!
Now, I must go look around and find my easter egg cutters!
adorable! 🙂 My little cousin loves strawberry shortcake, and I think these would please her a lot!
I heart strawberry shortcake. I still have my strawberry shortcake record that I listened to over and over when I was little. Now my little girl loves it!! Love the fountain story….the things we do for cookie cutters:) And the cookies….love their sweet simplicity:)
Love these! Wish I had seen something like this when I first started. My set of Strawberry Shortcake cookies weren’t near as simple and didn’t turn out near as well as yours – http://www.surrealconfections.com/2011/11/strawberry-shortcake.html
These are so adorable Callye! I love the little girl legs especially. I assumed that you used your onesie cutter like you did for the witch legs at Halloween, so I was glad you posted just how you made them with a bread cutter. And yes, I think God really did send you the cookie cutter in the mall fountain. It’s something you’ll always remember 🙂 One time I was on a bike ride down near Monterey with my cycling group. There was a long train of us cyclists and a car came up trying to hand out freebies to the cyclists. Everyone had to focus on the road and pay careful attention while riding in a paceline. I put my hand out behind me and kept my eyes on the road. They came up to me and put a little container in my hand and I slipped it into my jersey pocket in the back. They started yelling “she got one”. At the next rest stop, I pulled it out and it was this cute little green container. It was worthless, but to this day, I keep it in my cycling bag because I thought it was pretty cool and a fun memory 🙂
So very cute – my granddaughters would love this 🙂
Just wanted to drop a line and say your “Strawberry Shortcake” story was precious. Love your site! Your creativity is out of this world. Thank you SO much for sharing.
These are so cute!! I love the idea of creating simpler designs, I need to try that more often! 🙂
You never fail to amaze me with your ability to combine cookie cutter shapes! The star plus the egg is nothing short of brilliant, and absolutely perfect.
They are so cute!! And yumy!!

Fantastic biscuits. Very original. I want to make them with pictures of bride and groom. If you have an idea, write me. Congratulations for your website and sorry for my bud english
I saw that cookie cutter the other day and I think I threw it out while I was cleaning my daughter’s playroom. We are getting rid of old stuff. That cookie cutter would have been perfect since her bday theme this year is Strawberry Shortcake. If I end up making cookies, I will use your idea with the egg shape and star.
