Simple Starfish Cookies
Have you ever noticed that simple cookie designs are sometimes the prettiest? These starfish are the perfect example.
All you need to make them is:
- darker yellow piping icing
- lighter yellow flood icing {I mix white icing in the piping icing dish to create the perfect lighter shade}
- light yellow or gold sanding sugar
I picked up my neat little starfish cutter at The Cookie Cutter Company but any star cutter will work.
Begin by outlining the cookie with the darker piping icing. It doesn’t have to be perfect. As a matter of fact, I purposefully make the outline squiggly when I make starfish cookies. Once the cookie is outlined let it dry completely, at least an hour or two.
After the outline is dry, flood the cookies. Let them sit for a few minutes then quickly move onto the next step.
While the flood icing is still wet, lightly sprinkle with gold sanding sugar. Timing is very important here. You want the icing tacky enough that the sugar sticks, but not so wet it sinks into the liquified icing. Also, remember a little goes a long way. A sprinkle is nice but no one wants to nite into a cookie paved with sanding sugar.
When the cookies are completely dry {usually several hours later} use a clean paintbrush to dust off the excess sugar. If you skip this your little piping dots might not stick, so this is important.
I prefer a simple pattern like the one below. I start with a large center dot and then add four to five smaller dots leading to each point.
Give the details an hour or so to dry and you’re finished! These cookies are beautiful mixed with other sea-themed cookies

Cutest starfish ever!!!! Adding white icing to the outline color makes the flood match perfectly. Thanks for a new way to create perfect colors.

Your cookies make me both happy and sad. Happy because they are always gorgeous and they just make me happy looking at them! Sad, because every time I see them, I am reminded of my shortcomings. 🙁
But, I like to focus on the HAPPY! Each set is just fresh and new and original! You always seem to come up with new and better ways to decorate a cookie! THAT is why you are the QUEEN! 🙂
