Simple Striped Cookies in Red, White, and Blue
Need a simple cookie idea for your Memorial Day picnic? Then these are perfect for you. They make a huge impact without taking a lot of time.
Begin a day or three ahead by outlining and flooding a plain cookie {any shape is fine} with white icing. Let dry overnight.
The next day you will need:
- red piping icing with a #2 tip
- blue piping icing with a #1.5 tip
- light blue piping icing with a #1 or #1.5 tip
I started with the red and piped straight lines across the cookie. I went for a random pattern rather than symmetrical so I could claim it was planned if I goofed…but that’s just me
I gave the red a few minutes and then I moved onto dark blue. Same thing…lines.
Give them another few minutes, then again…lines. No yawning!
Mix them with simple stars and you’ll have win best of the block party.
Here are a few tips to make these cookies even easier.
- Consistency is the key to straight unbroken lines. Imagine the way toothpaste flows out of the tube when you squeeze…that’s what you’re going for. I’d almost compare it to pudding.
- For a visual example of what piping icing should look like, watch my video HERE.
- Keep steady pressure on the icing bag for the entire length of the line. If you stop squeezing, it will break.
- When mixing blue, make and bag the darker shade first. Then, without rinsing the container add white icing and mix. The leftover icing is perfect for creating a lighter shade of blue.
- I used tulip red {which you can read about HERE} and navy blue Americolor for this project but you can use any colors you like.
- Use leftover icing to decorate star cookies. Outline them first, then thin out the remaining icing to use for flooding.
Quick cookies equal more time to enjoy Memorial Day, which sounds like a good plan to me. But with all the time you saved there may be time for a cake too!

Hugs,Patti
Oh!! Glad to have you!!!!
so cute and really any colour combination you use would be great!
One of these days, I’m going to make some of your cookies. Honestly, I haven’t tried any yet because I’m too intimidated. I usually have difficulty expressing myself visually and you definitely have some big shoes to fill! 🙂 Although I might not be able to make these in time for memorial day, they’d also work very well for the 4th of July. Maybe then!
I promise with a little practice you’ll be pumping out perfect pretties in no time!
So pretty! Love this!
Love the simplicity. Love the lines (you know me and patterns). Love you. ?
Thanks for another mention. You’re so sweet. Hey….I’m gonna have to remake that patriotic set (since it is your favorite) and update to my current decorating! Those cookies are at least 3 years old!!! 🙂
Love the squares with stripes. I was already planning red, white and blue stars this weekend. Maybe I’ll add something else to it.
Thanks for the idea! I had a few squares left over and was just wondering what to do with them! 😉
Super cute! You make it all look so easy 🙂
I love the addition of the light blue…so pretty! Beautiful simplicity!
P.S. Thanks for the shout-out! You’re a sweetheart:)
Brilliantly simple — they have a nautical look to them too — perfect for summer! Love!
This is my kind of cookie decorating.
Perfect for any patriotic holiday!
Your Simple COOKIES are Simply Perfect COOKIES for me!!! xo
Puuuuuuurty!!!
Lovely, lovely little cookies! I love how simple you make everything look. It makes me want to give cookie decorating a try!
Doitdoitdoit! You’ll be hooked!
Thanks so much for the tip about making light blue out of the leftover darker color. That was totally an “ah ha!” moment for me. I cherish those little tips!
There is a method to my madness! I always mix the darker colors first for that reason! I’m glad it makes sense to someone else!!!
When you let cookies dry over night do you put them in a airtight container in the refrigerator? I’m just wondering how much space I’d need in the frig to keep all cookies one one level (not stacking them)
I leave them out in open air. The icing seals the top, and the bottom is against the sheet so very little surface area is exposed…also some of the moisture from the icing will seep into the cookie and keep it moist. If the cookie is already soft use an oscillating fan for the entire drying time…it will keep the. OONIE from absorbing more moisture. If they are on the drier side, only fan them until the icing has a sheen, then turn it off. More moisture will seep into the cookie this way and soften it a tiny bit…that was a loaded question, lol!
Hi there! I’ll be trying your cookie recipe this week. One question… do you measure flour then sift or sift then measure? Thanks… your cookies are gorgeous and the blog is fantastic!
Those are good for remembering our Military personnel.

These may be simple, but they’re gorgeous!!! There’s no way I could achieve those perfect, straight lines. Beautiful!
You inspire me, one day I will pluck up the courage to make these one day! You are so creative!
Perfect!
I practiced using a flag cutter in anticipation of a 4th BBQ. I didn’t like them. Then I saw this post. Love how patriotic without being typical. Can’t wait to WoW the fam next month!
Wow – I am so impressed by your site. I learned to make runouts several years ago, and am just now re-learning how to do this, and other aspects of sugarcraft as well. Some very useful information here, and thank you for sharing these ideas.
