Simple Graduation Cookie Platter
It’s about that time again! When it comes to graduation cookies, I am always a little short on great ideas. I made these graduate faces last year, but after I saw Lila Loa’s version, I didn’t think they were very cool anymore. So this year I kept things simple. I relied on basic designs and pretty primary colors to pack a lot of punch into this set of cookies. Here’s the skinny.
I made pretty plaque cookies by baking different shapes together. This year I constructed a star and graduation hat plaque. If you don’t already have a scalloped oval cutter, you can make one by squishing a circle. I explained it in a little more detail here. For the additions I used a small star a square fondant cutter sqwooshed into a diamond shape. For another graduation plaque cookie, check out Cookie Crazie Pam’s version HERE.
Remember, the key to baking cookies together is to make sure portion of the edges are touching. I learned that small seams do not stay together well after this epic fail last year.
I also spruced up simple star cookies by baking them together. I cannot take credit for this idea, I first saw them in my friend Ali’s teacher appreciation set. It’s such a simple design, but still one of my all-time Ali favorites.
The last cookie was a lucky accident. I had the best intentions to enter my friend Georgeanne’s creative cookie cutter contest but I chickened out ran out of time. Luckily, the cutter was out when I decided to cookie-fy a cute little graduation card I saw at Target. I didn’t trim mine as much as I wish I’d have, though. If you make these I would suggest trimming off a little more of the bow than I did.
Do you get it? It’s supposed to be graduation caps flying through the air. I thought it was pretty cute.
If you’re looking to make confetti cookies, try a little square fondant cutter. It works very well for this.
Here are the color combinations I used for this patter:
- royal blue + sky blue = spring blue {totally made up that color name}
- leaf green + egg yolk yellow = spring green
- egg yellow = yellow
- tulip red = red {for more info on tulip red, click HERE. It doesn’t have that icky red taste}
In the spirit of graduation, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes. Words to live by.
Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.

Congratulations , class of 2012!
Love that I’m the first to comment and I love these graduation cookies even more! 🙂
You are one smart cookie! Darling cookies. Someone is going to be very excited to get these! I love your creativity and visionary talents!
Sigh.
Everything you make is so perfect!
Super cool,..
Great collection! Perfect colors and I love the creative ideas… I always draw a blank for graduation stuff! And I LOVE that photo with the blue background and all the sprinkles and cookies spread out… so pretty and festive!
Once again, you blow me away with your creativity. These are super cute. I especially love the diploma scroll.
Wonderful, as usual!
Wow great cookies!! Have a nice week
I LOVE your hats-in-the-air-cookie-picture! SUCH a fun picture! This conversation JUST happened at my house while looking at it —
5 year old — What?! Those are some pretty cool cookies Mom. Can we make those? Oh…you didn’t make them. You don’t know how to make them.
Me — My friend made them.
5 year old — YES!!!! She can TELL YOU HOW TO MAKE THEM!! She can give you the recipe. I’ll say “please can we borrow the recipe?” That’s how we should say it.
So… even though he’s not a graduate. Even though he’s never really even been to school…we will be making these cookies at our house. 🙂
PS — Fantastic quote. It will be my new life theme. Thanks for sharing it!!
This post arrived just in time! I have two sets of graduation cookies this week and was trying to think of something new and different. Thanks for the new, creative ideas for cookies that I make every year.
I think you are out-of-this world AMAZING. To go from “a little short on great ideas” to THIS. Callye!!!!!…..you always thinking outside the box….AND cookie cutter. 🙂 Those flying grad caps are the best. It makes me so happy when I see you do things like that. My mind does not work like yours.,….I WANT IT TO…..but it won’t. But you….man…..YOU are so gifted. You take the ordinary and make it EXTRAORDINARY….every time. What a blessing. I love love love how you do things. And for you to mention me on a post like this, I’m honored. I love you, my friend! Don’t forget it. ?????
amazing! I just don’t what to say….you are pure cookie genius!!!
your colors are always so perfect…………not to mention that each cookie is flawless…..
I am so graduation platter exhausted, but then your new ideas make me want to make more! I love the little confetti cookies, a nice morsel, and the stars together are darling. Our graduation season seems to have passed already, I guess that’s why these poor kids in this area go back to school weeks before Labor Day!
Love love LOVE these cookies – so creative and cute! DId you use a bow for the scroll, or was that a frankencutter?
These are almost too pretty to eat!! I love the colors you chose!!
Love these so much!! You have the absolute best timing with tutorials. Never too early, never too late…just right! Graduation season is about to start here, and I know I’ll be making lots of those plaques with the caps embedded in them! Thanks again Miss Callye!
Your creativity and cleverness in making a different shapes from existing cookie cutter never ceases to amaze me.
I need to learn some of your creativity brain flexing execerises! 🙂
I love the graduation caps! Everything you make is so precision and perfect! The confetti is such a cute idea too! I always get such a good dose of eye candy when I visit your blog, Callye:)
You always make these looks easy to do. STUNNING!
Your talent for making beautiful cookies astounds me! Lovely!
Perfect as always! I love the cap flying through the air (with the present cookie cutter) – great idea! Is your other cap made with a regular cap cutter? The only one I have has a tassle that constantly breaks off. It drives me crazy and I am looking for another version.
Beautiful as always! I love the border with the alternating colors!
All of these are pretty darn cute. The flying grad caps, the stars, the confetti cookies, everything. The platter is a beautiful assortment and on the blue background with all the teeny star sprinkles it just pops.
Very cute! We’ve got some very special people graduating in my neighborhood this year, and these would be the perfect thing to bake and decorate for them. 🙂

I’ve been loving your site for the past couple of weeks now and really think you’re the best. I take pictues of my cakes and now I’m thinking if I should get a new camera after reading your tips on taking pictures. thanks for sharing.
I am trying to find a graduation cap cookie cutter for the graduation cookies you posted, but have only been able to find 4″ size or larger. For the cookie you show with the cap and oval, I would think it must be a smaller cutter than that. Any suggestions of where to find a smaller cookie cutter?
I smooshed a square into the diamond and just used that…
I really don’t understand how you made the Hat
Joie, this post should help you https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2013/05/standing-graduate-cookies/
You are crazy awesome at making the most out of your cookie cutters. I have your page book marked because when I need an idea….. there you are.
Thanks for sharing your amazing insights!!
Today while searching for graduation ideas I found this posting again. I followed the link to Lila Loa’s cookies and I like yours much better. I don’t know, especially for teens, if cookies portraying them with towering hairdos was the best choice. They’re very comical if that’s the theme she was going for. I just didn’t care for them. I’ve followed your site for years and it always amazes me what you create from an odd grouping of cookie cutters. Your cookies are amongst the best on the internet.
