A Tip about Tips
Did you know that not all icing tips are created equal? I didn’t until I stared at them for few years.
I have always bought three brands of icing tips…Wilton, Ateco, and PME {I’ve yet to see a Beckenal in real life}. I’m no expert, of course, but I always assumed that if the tips were the same number, they would be the same size {meaning a #2 is always a #2 or #3 a #3} no matter what brand they were. However, this isn’t the case.
I looked all over the Internet trying to find some sort of solid info or standard for how these things are sized, but I didn’t have a lot of luck. If someone else out there knows, PLEASE point me in the right direction. In the meantime here are my observations. I will try not to confuse everyone.
When compared side by side, #2 Ateco tips are actually larger than #2 Wilton tips.
They aren’t bigger than PME #2.5 tips, however. Here is a shot of all three together. As you can see the Ateco is bigger than the Wilton, but a bit smaller than the PME. The good thing about this is you can get away with buying the much cheaper Ateco #2’s in place of the PME’s because the Ateco is about the equivalent of a Wilton #2.5, if there were such a thing. Are you confused yet?
Here’s how an Ateco #2 compares to a Wilton #3. See what I mean? Right between a #2 and #3.
Now for an even more shocking comparison. Would you believe an Ateco #1 is actually bigger than a Wilton #2? Weird huh?
Now here’s an Ateco #1 compared to similar tubes.
And finally, the Wilton and Ateco #2 and #3 tips side by side. As you can see, there is a huge gap between Wilton sizes while the Atecos change more gradually.
I’ve even noticed a change in size between the same sizes of Wilton tips in recent years. It’s so tiny it’s hard to capture in a photograph, but I’d almost swear it’s true…or maybe I am just crazy, who knows?
Although I’ll never abandon my trusty old Wilton tips, I find myself buying a lot of Ateco #1 and #2’s these days. Besides being larger than Wilton’s, they are also a bit longer, which I like, because it allows me more control over my piping.
As for the more expensive PME’s, the only size I regularly invest in are the #1.5’s. They truly are miracle tips. However, aside from the #1.5’s, the Atecos are so similar to PME’s half sizes, I just cannot justify spending the extra money.
This is all personal preference of course, and you should always do what works for you, but my point is this…KNOW your options. Even if you cannot afford PME’s, {which usually run about $4-$5} there are quality tips that will work for you.
While we’re on the subject of tips and such, I have one other tidbit that I wanted to share. Have you ever wondered why Wilton couplers have notches in them but Ateco do not? My guess would be that you didn’t, but I’ll tell ya anyway.
The Wilton couplers have notches for tips like this one.
There is a little wire that keeps the middle of the flower perfectly centered inside the tip, so they put a little notch there to accommodate it.
If you found that interesting, you might also like to know that there are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball. Just kidding…
Another thing you might be wondering is how in the heck to pronounce Ateco. It’s A-TECH-OH. How do I know? Because Karen, who orders from them often, said that’s how they answer their phone when she calls. Works for me!
Anyway, these are my tips about tips. In the meantime I’ll work on finding out how these things are sized.

This is such a cool post. I love stuff like this. My favorite was comparing the PME 2, with the Wilton and Ateco’s.
cake was simple but ealegnt and I just love the way it turned out!! a0 a0The flavor was White Almond Sour Cream with Vanilla Almond Buttercream (Vanilla Buttercream with added Almond
Great post! I was actually just noticing the same thing the other day while decorating….although I don’t own any Ateco tips. I did notice a difference in the Wilton #2 and PME #2. I know Wilton tips have a seam, PME tips are seamless….do you know if Ateco tips have seams?
I just checked. I don’t see any…
Thanks!!
Wow…so interesting!!! I have yet to try Ateco….I think the PME 1.5 is my fave so far!! And yes… I have to agree…I have noticed that some of Wilton’s tips differ even though they are marked the same size. My 67 tip (that I emailed you about:)) was just giving me trouble…so I put on another 67…and wow…what a difference!!! I bet it is hard to make each tip exactly the same…and I wonder if some bending may occur accidentally in packaging…etc! Thanks for all of your research:)
Try using a thin knife to separate it a little too, A. That sometimes helps.
Wow, my brain got all sorts of fuzzy comparing those tips! 🙂 glad you had the courage to break it down. 😉
Hi Carolyn!
Great post! thanks
Recently, during a particularly late night decorating in a very quiet house, I started thinking about this very thing. I’ve decided that all tips should be placed on a spectrum from 00 to 5. You know, like …PME 1… Wilton 1… PME 1.5… Wilton 2….Ateco 1…. Because I’ve also noticed that PME is smaller than Wilton at the same size, but only until you hit size 3, and then at that point, the PME starts to range slightly larger than Wilton.
Of course, such a task would only be possible with brand new tips. Because….umm….I’m not always good at washing and drying my tips immediately and some of the tips are getting a little bigger due to some rust issues.
Also — the NOTCH? I had NO idea!! Clearly…I don’t use my petal tip with the metal center. Ever.
AGREED…now that I think about it, I should have taken the picture like that!
Are you suppose to take out the notch before using the drop flower tip? Btw wonderful post!
I’ve noticed this before when looking at my tips and thought the same thing. I guess they don’t have to have a standardized diameter.
This is great news for me…I always feel the need to buy PME but I will have to give Ateco a try. Can you please tell be what Beckenal is? Is it another brand? I have not heard of it and my google search isn’t pulling up any info on it either. THanks so much for all your “tips” that you share with us!
It’s another brand of icing tube…I think it’s Australian {but I may have made that up} and the company no longer exists {I may have made that up too}..comparable to PME’s in quality.
OHMYGOSH! I HAVE always wondered why there is a notch in the Wilton coupler!!! Thank you for enlightening me. I can sleep soundly tonight!
Hmmm. That may of come across as sarcasm in internetland. Honestly, I really have wondered that. Not enough to actually research it, but I really did want to know. Thanks!
Lol, totally understand. I love learning the answer to random things I wonder about. Now if someone would just tell me how they size these darn tubes, LOL!
Thanks for a great post. I only have Wilton tips, but lately I bought PME 1.5 and love them. I have a lot of trouble working with #1 or lower tip. I have to try the Sock trick. I have noticed that the coupler don’t always screw well, and when this happen instead of insisting and ripping my plastic piping bag I take another screw piece. Have you experienced something like that ? and Do you like Ateco coupler best or Wilton’s. Do the screw piece is interchangeable on each piece ?
I prefer Ateco just for this reason. They are don’t often cross thread when you connect them. Wilton couplers do this all the time and it’s infuriating. You’re also right that they aren’t interchangeable. Get them mixed up, and they either leak, or get stuck. You can always tell them apart because the Ateco couplers are more “white” and smoother plastic. I am slowly stocking up on the Ateco couplers so I can get rid of the Wilton eventually…although I will probably keep one or two to use with my drop flower tips, LOL.
Yes, I did know! Especially today when I was outlining some Tea Cup Cookies. Noticed that #2 PME was not the same as a Wilton#2 or a Plastic tip I had from Betty Crocker decorating tips when I first started to decorate cookies.
Cookie decorating is sort of like Oil Painting with different sized paint brushes and different Brand Name paint brushes. Not all are the same. Experiment, experiment, experiment. Until your masterpiece is what you want it to be!
Yet another addiction. I LOVE brushes!
Loving you for typing this!!! 🙂
I thought I was losing my mind swearing they were different sizes, but your pictures are perfect, and I’m glad for the insider tip on Ateco. Thank you!
This is very helpful! I’m definitely going to pay more attention to the tips I invest in now. It’s great to be informed–thank you for taking all the guesswork out of it, Callye!
I love this post Callye………..but I thought the comment on your fb page “why do you have so many?” was funny and cute.
Thanks for sharing this……………I’m feeling the need to try Ateco…I never have even seen them!
LOL, Even if I am not making thirty dozen cookies a week, I can be prepared for it, right, LOL!
I had no idea! It’s been so long since I broke out my tips…I need to get back in the game!
great info, and the couplers, I thought they did it to save a little money on plastic, see how silly that sounds now, it makes total sense the the wire tips need that.
You are the consummate investigative reporter, Callye!
I love PME’s for two reasons: they’re seamless and they never rust. They’re invaluable to me.
Do you ever experience rusting with Wilton tips there, Gail?
I have a Wilton 1S and a Wilton 1L that doesn’t even fit into my bottle coupler. Do you know what these are suppose do for me? I haven’t quite figured it out!
The Wilton 1S means it is a little smaller than the Wilton 1 tip. The Wilton 1L means it is a longer tip. Should have the same size hole as the Wilton 1, just longer. You would use that tip when you are trying to get into tight spots. Such as bridges and string work for Lambreth and Australian work. They should fit into the regular Wilton couplers. I hope that helps.
I llove the Wilton S sizes…I have a 65s and 101s that a LOVE LOVE LOVE! Wish I had ten!
Ps…that’s one of the answers I got as a “maybe” for why the sizes ran different. It was suggested that Wilton tips were designed for the amature decorator, therefore wider openings, easier to use, vs. PME and Beckenal, which were geared toward things like Austrian lace and tiny string work. Now this was just a theory, but it’s an educated one :-).
Inquiring minds what to know!! Thank you for the research.
You answered two very important questions I had. Why Wilton couples have that slot and how to pronounce Ateco. I was pronouncing it the way Karen said, but I’ve heard it said different ways.
Callye – thanks for the info on the different brand tips. I have a related question, that maybe you or another commenter can answer for me. I have not used a large tip yet ( I know, strange). I don’t have a coupler for the large tips, although I believe my Wilton kit came with a couple larger tips, it didn’t come with a large coupler. I know I can purchase one for like $2 at Michael’s or even WalMart. But, I have seen photos in many blogs showing people using large tips (1M, for example) and not using couplers. My question is doesn’t the frosting seep between the icing bag and the tip and squirt out causing ugly squiggles on the cookie or cake you are decorating? Maybe you don’t use the large tips on cookies, but they seem great for cupcakes and other cake decorating.
Just a question to throw out there…thanks for your informative blog and the gorgeous cookies you wow us with regularly.
Are PME tips really the answer to “clogging”? They are expensive, but I’m
willing to pay the price if it will alleviate clogging problems 🙂
Sorta…the #1.5’s are a must. They are a good middle between tiny and not so tiny they are a cloggy mess. However , ANY tip can clog. To prevent this, I suggest cutting out a little piece of knee high pantyhose and screwing it over the opening of the coupler, a trick I learned from Karen of Karens cookies, or to strain itwith a nylon hose (there’s a how-to on the Bearfootbaker’s blog for this trick)
I couldn’t even begin to focus let alone attempt to understand & learn about all the frosting tips BUT I love your blog so much that I overlook my complete lack of knowledge. Reading your blog is like going to a museum & staring at works of art. You have a gift from God- I am beyond envious.
LOVE these tips about the tips! I personally have found that I really like the quality of the PME tips. I like how long and skinny their tips seems to be so when it comes to writing, it feels more like using a pen than anything else. Thank you for sharing the idea about the nylons over the coupler – what a fantastic idea!
I’m far from being called a cookie decorator since I don’t have much patience and I truly admire you for all the hard work you put in.
You’re not crazy for noticing that even two Wilton tips are a wee bit different. I have a couple of frosting tips that even if they are Wilton and the same number, I like to believe it was a manufacture problem, they are different in size.
Thanks for the tips! No pun intended…
Alphabet Cake Pan.a0a0a0 I’ve used it to make letters and nubmres and even to make this Lego Cake.a0 It’s a very versatile and useful pan if you do lots of cakes!a0a0a0 Here’s the
I’m a huge fan of the PME tips…if you leave them in water…they won’t discolor or rust like the other tips. I also find they they clog a whole lot less than any other tip. I also can’t live without the Ateco couplers…they aren’t a pain in the tushey to schew the holder thingy (technical term) on! =)
This post on tips is genius. I have been wondering about that for awhile. I am new to cookie decorating and your posts give me such wonderfull information. Your work is incredible and inspirational.
Great tips!
I love it when you share interesting ‘tips’ like this, really I do. Oh and I’m getting me some of those PME 1.5’s next time I order from someone who stocks them.
Thanks for the great tips on tips, Callye! I have been meaning to buy a PME 1.5 tip for a long time, and now is the time. I will take your advice on the Ateco tips 1 and 2 and purchase them too:)
I sure hope that I secure a ticket for CookieCon! It would be such a treat to meet you! 🙂
love your post Callye, all the differences drive me crazy. a few years ago I thought I was loosing my mind that the same number tips came out differently, until I compared them…they were different! Ugh! so confusing, glad I’m not the only one who compares tips 🙂
hope you had a wonderful mothers day!!!!
I love how thorough and detailed you research is! I’ve compared some, but never gotten down to the nitty gritty like this. Thanks for laying it all out there, I will for sure be referencing this next time I buy more tips! And your pictures for this post are crazy good! You have mad skills in the photography department too!
I have a question! i noticed that you used a bottle container, when decorating you’re cookies.is it better to handle, verses a decorating wilton bag. if so where can I pruchase such bottles, in the hobby store I only find the bottles for candy decorating ,and they are small ! please help . thanks lupita
Uh, no…I did NOT know what that little notch was for!!! Why the HECK don’t they TELL you that?!?
a-tech-o….didn’t know that either!
And I swear, some of my tips that are the same brands are different. So strange. I do love the PME’s…you sold me. I have some #1.5’s, 2s and a 0. 🙂
I love the side-by-side shots of the top for comparison. I have to say I’m not a Wilton fan of pretty everything. I have a few tips from them, but I a huge Ateco fan! Thanks for he shopping resources!
I am a relative new reader of your blog.. and I love it. I have learned so much!!! Thanks for sharing your talent. Your cookies decoration looks so perfect and clean. I wonder if you have some kind of rule as to what tip size to use for outlining before flooding and or for outlining afterflooding. What size tip to use for details? like the wings of a bird.

WOW – I had NO idea! thanks Callye
Hi!!
I loved your cookies!! They are gorgeous!!
I would like an advice. I want start decorating cookies, could you please suggest a basic kit of tips for beginners?
Thank you very much,
Julia
are the diameters on the open side the same though? i mean, do the wilton pipes for example fit into the ateco couplers? i’m having such a hard time finding the right items online that will be shipped to me. it’s such a pain not to live in he u.s. trying to get decent stuff together without spending a fortune for shipping.
thanks in advance!
anna
I have been a cake decorator for over 35 years. I used to do competition cake decorating. I learned many years ago the difference between Bekenal tips and all the rest. Bekenal tips are seamless. The openings are very precise. The tips are smaller in diameter at the big opening, therefore, will not fit on a Wilton coupler, but you can adapt by putting the Bekenal tip into a Wilton #12 and then onto the coupler for a quick use. A Bekenal 2 is slightly smaller than a Wilton 2. Most decorators using the Bekenal tips are using only a small amount of royal icing in a parchemnt bag, so a coupler isn’t really necessary. If you ever want to do the very fine stringwork like you see on the Australian and English fondant cakes, the Bekenal tips are a must. There is no good way to describe the difference, but when you use them, you know. With most other brands, the icing has a tendency to curl coming out of a small tip, especially 00, 0, & 1, They really are the finest tips in the world.
Thank you so much for this informative article! I just organized all my tips (yes finally!) and had cause to actually look at them and was wondering about all of these things you mentioned: why are they different sizes when they are the same numbers? why are some Wilton’s tips different sizes than the same number in Wilton? One thing not mentioned that I noticed is that the star tips are very different, some are open, some are more closed, perhaps from use or ??????
Anyway, thanks again for clearing all of this up!
Great post, very useful! I’m looking to order an ateco piping bag that comes with 2 tips but no coupler, so i was wondering if the Wilton couplers/tips would also work with it? *fingerscroseed*
Thanks!
Here I am again, on your site, where ALL the best answers are found.
Thank you, ten times over!
I bought some Wilton #3 tips and they’re as big as my older #4s. Thought I was going crazy.
Interesting read.
Now I didn’t see one thing I was looking for. Can Wilton and Ateco tips be used interchangeably with the other couplers?
Yes, I use them with both couplers with no problem.
I’ve recently noticed Wilton’s #2 tips are
Sorry
I’ve recently noticed Wilton’s #2 tips are different sizes. The older ones were made in Korea and are smaller than the newer ones I’ve recently bought which are made in China. The new ones I find are too big. I loved the Wilton #2 tip that was made in Korea! Sorry so many post, I accidentally pressed post comment before I was done. And yes, I did it twice! Love your work!
I love your posts! You are so funny! 🙂 Thanks for the clarifications. I have been dragging my feet to buy PME 1.5 for a long time but I think I will give it a try now. Writing is just too hard with Wilton 1 or 2. Have a great day! 🙂
I am in desperate need of a decorating tip # .5. Does anyone have a clue where I can find it?

I am in a desperate need for a decorating tip # .5, smaller than tip #1. Do you have an idea of where I can find it?
hi. i wanna ask how about PME 58R and 57R, are these the same as Wilton’s 104? Thanks
They are not the same. The Wilton 104 is a straight petal tip, and the PME “R” means it is a right-handed tip. It is wavy for a more old fashioned rose style petal. PME and Wilton both have left-hand tips as well.
My question is: Can you use Wilton tips with any icing reusable bags? Was thinking of buying Boss bags in 3 different sizes.
SSB- I enjoyed this post immensely.
This might be the perfect place to ask about this:
“Is there a difference in the manufacturing materials (or process) when comparing KOREAN #3 decorating tips to the CHINA #3 decorating tips?”
The first had a shinier plating and the second has a duller, more burnished appearance.
“What changed?”
“Is it possible to still purchase KOREAN #3’s ?”
Thanks for the detailed analysis! I was considering the PME because it says it won’t twirl away rogue. Sometimes I am holding my top one way in my mind it is going one way and then it goes a completely different way usually in a spiral. I thought I had read that the PME doesn’t do that. Did you notice any difference in that regard?
I have Beckenal icing nozzles ~ trust me this is the best.. they are narrow and longer and a pleasure to use in re usable piping bags.. hard to find for sure!!
I am a beginner, but with sort of life experience baking. I ran across this and am so overwhelmed at what is out there! I was about to purchase a beginners cake decorating set not any of those brands but the “stainless steel” kind. Is this important???? My friend uses all Wilton, but thats because she inherited her moms stuff.
Wilton is a great starting place and brand. I have used it successfully for years. Since you are beginning, I recommend going to out to Michaels or Hobby Lobby and picking up a few things at a time and trying it out as you learn. You will get the feel for what you like and don’t. My best piece of advice is to start slowly, and don’t buy a tin of anything until you get a feel for things. My biggest mistake through the years has been overbuying.
what do the different letters stand for on the Wilton decorating tips? I have some with A, B, C, and D. on them. I am just starting to learn about decorating.
I have the same question as Judy Maseman, and I’m also a beginner. What do the letters on the Wilton tips stand for? I have A, B, D, K and M.
