Easy Ladybug Cookies
Ladybug cookies seem to be the cookies that never go out of style. They are simple but striking. Thee are many ladybug cookie cutters on the market such as THIS ONE and THIS ONE, but my favorite cutter to used for these is actually a BALLOON COOKIE CUTTER. The tail adds a little extra room for antennae, and something about antennae really up the cute factor of ladybug cookies.
These cookies are so simple to make that you might just cry. Tears of joy, of course!
To make ladybug cookies you will need:
- black piping, flood, and 20-SECOND ICING
- red piping and flood icing
That’s it! Gotta love those two color cookies!
Begin by outlining the cookie with a #2 tip as shown below. To reduce the chances of bleeding, give the outline an hour or so to dry between colors. It sounds like a long time, but it SURE beats ruined cookies.
Once the outline has dried fill the cookie. I do mine in three sections…tail, middle, and head, {you can do it in any order you like} allowing an hour or two of drying time between sections to prevent bleeding.
I also use my fan to help dry them as suggested HERE. I have only ever had one or two bleeding issues with my icing and I wholeheartedly believe that fan drying my cookies is what stops it.
Once the cookie is filled, let it dry overnight. This is VERY important if you don’t want your spots to bleed.
The next day, used 20-SECOND ICING to add dots. You can go for a uniform look, or a more whimsical random look as I did below. At this point, let the cookie dry for another three or four hours.
You can stop here but I like to clean up my final cookie by using a #1.5 ICING TIP to go back around the cookie. Of course, this is personal preference, so skip it if you like.
For visual interest, I like to mix my ladybugs, or ladybirds as my friend Fiona calls them, with daises {tutorial coming soon} and leaves for contrast and to make them visually appealing.
Until I typed up this post, I’d almost forgotten about the term ladybirds. I think I like it. It really doesn’t matter what you call them, there is something sweet about these bugs!
- If you need a balloon cutter like mine, you can find it HERE at Karen’s cookies. I love this little cutter and use it for many things, like these PIRATE COOKIES.
- Red and black icing can both taste kind of icky. I like to use TULIP RED icing color because it is tasteless. you can read more about it HERE.
- If you have bleeding trouble, be sure to check out THE FAN TRICK. I swear it’s the reason my icing never bleeds
- If you’re planning a ladybug party, you should check out THIS ONE from my friend Ashleigh of A Bee in Our Bonnet. It really is the cutest I think I have ever seen.
I hope everyone is having a wonderful week!
Such talent!

Thanks so much for all your wonderfully inspirational photos and tutorials. I love this spring “Callye Collection” and was wondering what kind of leaf cutter you used. I am planning to make a bugs life set of cookies and that is the perfect leaf for what I’m thinking?
I have also been searching for a leaf cutter like that, and haven’t seen one even close (saw it originally on your sunflower post a while back). Would love to know where yours came from!
I just LOVE ladybugs:)They bring good luck;) Your cookies remind me of spring. gorgeous, as always. xx
I am new to the idea of decorating cookies, cakes, etc. Your blog is the best!! It gives me such confidence. The cookies are adorable. Hello-
I am an amateur at baking and looking to put some personal touches on my daughters 1st birthday. Her nursery and my baby shower theme was ladybugs so naturally I would like to carry this over for her 1st. I would like to take a stab at these cookies, however I am perplexed at the icing you make to top it off with. Your recipe calls for flood and 20 second icing. What is the difference? Will your recipe for Royal Icing work for both?
Thank you!

Hi there, I made cookies similar to these just last night, and for some reason when the big spots dried, it left a big crater in the middle. 🙁

So many beautiful cookies!!
I’m new to cookie decorating, and I’m finding many helpful ideas from your site … thank you! My biggest problem is with bleeding, and I’m guessing it has to do with CONSISTENCY (I just ruined some cookies so that’s why I’ve capitalized the dreaded word). I’m also PERSISTENT so it’s my hope within a short while I’ll learn about CONSISTENCY!
Thanks again for all the great information … are there any cookie decorating classes in the Atlanta area?

We call them ‘ladybirds’ in the UK but I like calling them ‘ladybugs’ too. My mum says I use American words too often!

I am getting ready to make the ladybug & flower cookies for my granddaughter’s birthday party. I purchased the balloon cutter & 1.5 tip. My question is that the party is going to be held outdoors. I am concerned about the frosting. Will it soften up when the cookies are taken outside? I have air-conditioning in the house and will use the fan method. Any advice? Thanks in advance.
Ohhhh, I am not sure on that one. I know that The Cookie Countess and The Painted Cookie live in in Connecticut {saw your email but didn’t get time to reply} I would ask on their Facebook pages. Both are very helpful and kind.
My cookies were decorated yesterday and I will apply the black spots today. Will I have trouble with the 20-second icing flowing too rapidly out of the tip? The cookies look so great at this point I don’t want to ruin any. It rained off and on yesterday and overnight. I’m hoping the cookies don’t soften in the process. I did use the fan method. Help? Thanks!
My ladybug and daisy cookies came out fantastic for the party on Saturday. Luckily the humidity wasn’t high and the cookies could be kept in the shade. I was trying to figure out how to send you a picture but I haven’t been able to discover that yet. Thanks for all your advice. It’s appreciated.
These are adorable! And with Valentines Day on its way, thanks for the link on the red icing topic. I have yet to get a cheery red!! Pink, burgundy-sure. Red continues to elude me but will give it another shot!
