“Owl” Always Love You Cookies
Sorry…I couldn’t help myself. I’m a sucker for corny Valentine’s sayings. Not so much because I love the holiday {it’s a birthday in our house} but those corny sayings really take the cookie possibilities beyond conversation hearts and traditional red and pink.
I especially love it that Valentine’s Day gives me a reason to make cute owls. All the owls I’ve seen in real life are scary and large enough to eat a small child. That’s why I prefer with cute. For some reason, child-eating owls aren’t very popular…
Get it, ANY-hooo?
Okay, I’ll stop.
Anywho, back to what I was saying. Since heart cookies are plentiful this time of year, I decided to use them to for my owl cookies, but you can also use a tulip like I did HERE , or create more realistic {scary, child-eating} owls like my Pinterest-inspired owl cookies.
To make these cookies you will need:
- ivory piping and flood icing
- light gray 20-second icing
- dark gray 20-second icing
- large candy beads {I get mine HERE}
- pink piping icing
The day before, outline and flood the heart cookies with ivory icing. If you need help with outlining and flooding, click HERE. On the same day, make eyes by using light gray 20-second icing to make a circle and dropping in candy beads.
If you are not familiar with this technique, click HERE to learn more.
Let them dry and the next day you’ll have eyes like these.
Begin by using a stencil to make flowers on the dry ivory cookie in the area where his eyes will be. Sometimes when I need to mark a blank cookie but don’t want a visible marker line, I use a needle tool like THIS ONE to scratch a design onto the cookie.
I’ve heard of people using other things, such as graphite pencils {which are non-toxic} to do this, but sometimes people get kind of funny if you write on their food with pencils, so I came up with another way.
If you’re not down with the pencil thing, please don’t send me hate mail or nasty comments. I just thought I would throw it out there since I’ve heard of it being done and you might have too.
AnyHOO {yes, I am still snickering at my bad joke}, after the cookies were marked, I used Ali-Bee’s great brush embroidery tutorial to make the flower background of the eye.
I’ve been kind of obsessed with brush embroidery lately. I’m not a pro yet, but I’m learning. The most important thing I’ve learned is that holding the cookie while working, as Ali suggested, really helps. I didn’t do that the first few times and they didn’t turn out as well. Moral of the story, when the queen of brush embroidery tells you to do something…listen!
After the flower was finished, I added a blob of icing to the middle and stuck on one of the eyes I made the day before.
Then, I did it all over again to make the second eye.
After the cookies dried a bit, I used ivory piping and dark gray 20-second icing to add the finishing touches. That wasn’t hard at all, was it?
Now for the fun part. If these look like something you’d like to try for Valentine’s Day, my friend Lisa, The Bearfoot Baker, made a fancy little treat. She designed an adorable set of printable bag toppers to match my little owl cookies, because she’s nice like that AND there is no way I could have done it on my own. To get yours, click HERE.
Speaking of Lisa and owls, this whole collaboration started just a few days ago after a random conversation we had about…OWLS. The crazy thing is, a few days later, she actually sees a real live owl hanging out in the woods near her house! She even took pictures. You can check them out when you head over for the printables.
In other news, tomorrow is the day I begin quitting Diet Coke. I might die. Or turn into a horrible miserable wife that my husband and children fear. Or I might fail. But I am going to try.
If I don’t die, I will be back soon with more cookies to share!
(Ha. Told you I would. )
“Child-eating owls aren’t very popular” HA HA HA HA HA HA
And in other news — BRUSH EMBROIDERY EYES???!!!! I love them!!!
AMAZING! I love these! You’ve certainly inspired me and I think I may try these for my family for valentines! With those cute tags as well! Thank you thank you!
Owl love these! (LOL)
Serious biz, these are too-die-for cute! My mom collected owls back in the early 80’s in Texas, and our house was filled with horrible, ugly gold-brown-and-orange “child-eating” versions. I’m so glad that decorating style died out!
I’ve tried the brush embroidery once myself, with TERRIBLE, awful, horrible, no-good, very bad results, and I’m still too chicken to try it again. Everyone else makes it looks so easy, including YOU! As for the Diet Coke, you go girl! (And I’ll keep you in my prayers, having been through that process before!)
WHY?! WHY were owls gold, brown and orange in that decade?! We had them in my house too!! (We even had one made out of macrame.) Great. Now I feel the need to cookie that.
Nic, was your mom in a sorority? My mom is a chi omega and she has them everywhere!!!
I love your designs.
Espero haberlo dicho bien.
Bss.
You’re owls look like skulls from Dia De Los Muertos celebrations!! <3
your*
Those are amazing. I am always impressed with your cookies!
Awww these are so freaking cute!
Cute as pie!!! I will have to try making these for my grandson’s school valentine party.
Kicking the diet coke habit!!! That’s great. I need a “bud” to do that with. I hope you report at least every other day as to how you are doing. I just quit smoking almost 2 months ago, cold turkey. I think I can kick the diet coke habit too cold turkey. I’ve decided I’m stronger and I WILL NOT give in! I CAN DO THIS WITHOUT A CRUTCH!!!
CONGRATS on quitting smoking!!! My husband did also so I know how hard it is. If you can kick cigs you can definitely kick Diet Poison. Good luck!!!!!!
Love these- what a cute idea (I’m not into the whole owl thing as much as a lot of people but these are so cute they could get me to change my mind about that)!
Callye, you are totally amazing. I love these, and I love that you are the queen at re-purposing cookie cutters. These are so cute!! Thanks for the wonderful tutorial!!! Sharon
SO cute! And yes, I love the corny sayings too, but i won’t admit it in public.
You’ve combined my three favorite things…V-day, hearts, and owls!! Love love love these!! I pinned them 🙂
Good luck quitting Diet Coke! Just keep reminding yourself it’s literally poison. lol
Very creative and adorable. Love the colors you used! Thanks for posting the tutorial on these gems. Also, good luck kicking the Diet Coke habit!
I wish you much strength as you drop the Diet Coke. I have given up and fallen, given up and fallen, given up and fallen, for Diet Pepsi too many times to remember. I need to give it up again. You inspire me. I’m afraid I’ll die too – especially because I get up early (really, really early) for classes at the gym now. I’m a zombie by 11am without my “fix”.
Owls are adorable, and your cookies always make me so hungry 🙂
Adorable!!!
Good luck quitting the DC habit. Pretty certain I would turn into a witch if I quit that and coffee!
These owls are so darned cute! I love ’em!
Quitting Diet Coke…..are you replacing it with something good…..like a nice tea, or wine, or Jack Daniels? I’m not sure I could quit all together……we cut back to about two sodas a week. That’s not terrible, right?
So cute!
I quit DietCoke a couple of weeks before Christmas. NOT EASY,it IS an addiction, but so glad I did. Kind of replaced some of the caffine with hot tea. :/ It wasn’t the caffine I was trying to get rid of anway, but all of the chemicals. Good luck, I KNOW you will do it!
These are very cute and *kid* friendly for sure. Good for you for trying to quit Diet Coke. Best wishes with it Callye.
These are so cute, thanks so much for the inspiration. Your cookies are always amazing and I love the step-by-step instructions you provide! Thanks again, love your blog!
The cutest owl I have ever seen!
You have the best ideas! I just love reading your blog! Thanks for sharing!
These cookies look awesome! Very Creative!
Adorable!
Love the cookies and my oldest is on an owl kick so these will be perfect to send to school. Good luck with kicking Diet Coke. I went off it for 6 months and felt sooo much better but I fell off the wagon and am trying really hard to kick it again. According to my dr. it’s totally addictive so for those non-Diet Coke drinkers out there, it’s harder than you think!
Absolutely adorable and hilarious (I laughed at EVERY any-hoo because I was an English major and that was the sort of stuff we always laughed at)–thank you for sharing your beautiful work! And good luck on the DC withdrawals. I hope you succeed!
These cookies are just precious! I was a dc addict and have also recently quit….for now. 😉 It actually wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Good luck – you can do it!
Alana
I loooove owls! these are super cute! The brush embroidery really makes them look special. I’m so jealous the barefoot baker got to see one in person!! :-p
So cute. Seriously. You KNOW I love owls. And I am DYING from that brush embroidery. I just want to stare at it all the livelong day.
Ill have some of those.
So adorable!
These are adorable!!! And beginner friendly, thanks for the tutorial!
My daughter is scared of owls in real life but I love everything cute owl-y. I am thinking about doing these for my daughters dance class. I like that they aren’t traditional hearts.
so cute, cute, cute, cute!
These almost look like they would work for a Day of the Dead kind of cookie, without the beak of course. Good luck with the Diet Coke withdrawls, you can do it. I gave it up a week ago and still Coke free lol.
Wow! Amazing as always!
These remind me of candy skulls!
These are a hoot! What an adorable idea. Owls are so popular for parties right now. I just love seeing more and more ideas with them.
I love owl, and your cookies make my smile!
Owls are all the rage these days! 🙂 Yours are exceptionally cute!!
“Hoo” loves these….I DO! Awesome tag from the bearfoot baker!
Sooooooooo cute!!! I like your idea of scratching the design into the dried cookie. I’ll have to try that instead of using my food markers.
So cute! And funny…any-hoooo…I laughed anyway…
Thanks for the mention! 🙂
OMG, cute! I love owls and will definitely be trying these soon! Whoooooo! 🙂
These are adorable. Love your tutorials.
Owl take some!!
Hi, Mom. Guess we know where I got my humor from 🙂
Adorable! You are such an inspiration and so dang funny!! Thanks for sharing these adorable little owl cookies. AJ@queenofmynest
Love the owls!! I promise you – promise – that you will feel sooooo much better when you stop drinking DC. I too was a DC addict – quit years ago. Once you stop and if ever you have a relapse – you will get ill from it. This just proves how bad it is for you. I applaud you for your efforts and will be rooting for you!!!
All my best,
Dana
These are such cute heart shaped owls, Callye! We had an owl crash into our windshield and shatter it once, so they kind of spook me a little bit when I see them in nature. Good luck tomorrow!
Que bonitas y que idea tan original. Saludos
quitting diet coke? beware, terrible headaches are coming!

They are here!

Woo hoo!
I’ve been viewing your blog for some time. Your cookies are amazing! I am a bit too ham-fisted to produce artistic results like these but the owls are so great I just might have a go 🙂
So cute & clever how these are “Valentine-y” even without the usual decorations!
Adorable. I love them 🙂
Oh these are so pretty! I am a wild bird fanatic and also own and love pet finches. My birthday is the first week of Feb so I think I will make these cookies to celebrate my day. Owls are a great bird for representing the avian kingdom. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely idea.
wow!!! le tue creazioni sono semplicemente fantastiche… saluti dall’italia rosa.kreattiva
Uh. Seriously. These are perfect!! Love them!
So cute! I am SO behind on reading all my fav blogs after having no power for about a week – but I had to hop and and take a look at these adorable owls! BTW – I LOVE the corny stuff too. 😉
