Cupids, Cherubs, or Angels…Whatever!
So, I had this great idea, but it didn’t turn out exactly as planned. Does that ever happen to you?
I decided that with a few adjustments, my Christmas angel cookies would magically turn into cupids. Only when I made them, they didn’t quite look like cupids. They kind of looked just like angels, or maybe cherubs, but they weren’t really “cupidy” at all, so, I improvised…which we’ll talk about in a bit. For now, let’s talk about how I built them.
The cookies are pieced together using small flower and mustache cookies. You can find both cutters at Off the Beaten Path. A lip cutter would also work very well for this, if that’s what you have.
To decorate, you will need:
- fleshtone 20-second icing {for help with this click HERE}
- white piping and flood icing
- rainbow disco dust
- medium consistency piping icing for hair
- light pink 20-second icing, heart, or lip sprinkles {you can find a great selection HERE}
- fine tip black marker like THIS
- black piping icing
- pink petal dust
Begin by using fleshtone 20-second icing to create a face on the small flower making sure to leave room for hair. Set them aside to dry.
Meanwhile, outline and fill the wings with white icing and lightly sprinkle with disco dust.
See the sparkle? I keep my disco dust in shakers like THESE from Karen’s Cookies. I love them because they give an even application with minimal mess. At this point let both cookies dry.
When the cookies have dried, use a #2 tip to add hair, and the marker, black piping icing, and pink 20-second icing for the face. To save time and icing, it’s also a great idea to use sprinkles {heart and lips} for the mouth. They can be found HERE.
To finish up, use a cotton swab or brush to apply petal dust to the cheeks. Pipe a design onto the wings and attach the face with a blob o’ icing. Don’t you LOVE how technical cookie decorating can be?
Let them dry, and you’ll have…an angel.
Which is NOT what I had in mind. That’s where all the improvisation came in.
I tried adding a pretty heart sprinkle to make my angel more “cupidy” but I still wasn’t happy. So, I did what I always do when things don’t go my way. I texted my best friend.
I love it that even when she’s working she’ll answer 911 texts about important things like the difference between cupids and angels, even if it’s only a word.
“Arrows?”
So, I made arrows.
It was pretty easy. I used royal icing to “glue” sprinkles and toothpicks together on waxed paper, then after they dried, I brushed the ends with vanilla and disco dust.
The idea was to use leftover mustache cookies as bows, then stick on an arrow. Except that when I made the bows, I rushed and the cookies were so ugly I wanted to forget I even made them. No sense in ruining perfectly decent cherubangelthingys with ugly bows, right?
So, there will be no photos until round two. In the meantime, my cupids are bow-less, but it’s a cute idea and I hope someone will attempt a decent version.
Even though I had to go with plans B and C, I decided my angel-y cupid girls were okay in the end, especially when I noticed they resembled my dear friend, Stephanie, who almost qualifies as an angel herself.
The moral of this story? If at first you don’t succeed, improvise. Or maybe it’s never show ugly cookies. In any case, all’s well that ends well!
I am finally back in Valentine’s mode. Sorry it took so long. I took off with a bang then sort of fizzled out. But I’m finally refreshed and there’s lots more to come, so stay tuned.
Have a restful day of rest, my friends!

I love all of your posts, but especially enjoyed this one. It is fun to see your step by step process. Your ideas seem endless…..
Very Cute idea C! Have any extra motivation to throw my way? I’ve not made any cookies since the 27th of Dec — seems I’ve completely lost my Mojo and can’t find it anywhere!
Que belleza de querubines. Saludos
Love the hair, love the lips, love the arrows!!! Guess you could say I love your cupid cookies 🙂 !!!

These are adorable, arrows and all and I love all that curly hair!
Callye! You are ridiculously creative! too stinking cute!
Such a cute idea, sorry it didn’t turn out as you wanted. I have an idea though, what if you turned them so the mustache shape was vertical, then set the head to the left side a bit – you know like the cupid is flying and the wings are behind it? Just an idea and I couldn’t help but suggest it.
These are too cute!
Maybe you can’t decide what to call them, but I call them darling! I also love the tiny little arrows!~so cute! I do have a cupid cookie up my sleeve, for a couple of weeks now, but I am a slow mover:)
You are such an artiste! These are beautiful, and I love those adorable little arrows 🙂
Well I personally LOVE these…….in the end at least it didn’t end up as edible PORN like my recent mega FLOP. NICE ARROWS!!!!
Hahahaha! U better email me a pic! Not knowing ia killing me lol! I just thought of another title. A whole OTHER kind of Valentines Day treat!
I have “arrow envy”
LOVE these… they are darling, and you are so creative! They also kind of look like Brides! U know like with a veil? Precious… you could make those for a bridal shower and they would be perfect! Pinning these for future reference! 🙂
I love them! They are perfect little angels…I mean cupids! Either way, they say “LOVE”! But then again, you can see love in all of your creations! And “never show ugly cookies”…that’s my motto! If only people KNEW the uglier ones I keep from them! LOL
I love the arrow idea very cute touch to your angel/cupid cookies, which those are cute to!
Angels, Cupid or cherubs they are adorable and I want them! I think we all need to carry those little arrows around and shoot anyone who needs a shot of love. Or we could make them a set of these cookies and they would “feel the love!” Thanks for sharing:)
Actually, I think they look like BRIDES! Very pretty brides at that, but I would actually make these for a bride.
You never cease to amaze me! Fabulous!

Could there possibly be anything cuter?? L.O.V.E.
Those are your B & C plans ??? SO creative and darling ! If you didn’t tell us, none of us would. have known…can’t wait to see what’s next on your Valentine’s roster !
Those are SOOO cute… They could also pass as a bride with a lacy veil flowing behind her head.
🙂
I think the cookies came out really adorable. They would also be great for Communion cookies favors don’t you think?. Using a little flower cutter is such a great idea because we can play with the hair style and be change to other styles. Thank you for sharing this fun idea.
I just love the details on your cookies…the eyelashes, the heart mouths, the curly hair, just adorable! You are such a talent!!
These are super cute Callye. I know that I can’t see what’s inside your head and what you had planned, but these are super cute. I made the world’s ugliest cake the other day for my daughter’s birthday. Everyone came to the party saying it was pretty and blah blah blah, but they didn’t know the picture in my head of what it was supposed to be and therefore it turned out super ugly to me, but it was presentable to everyone else. Your angel/cherubs are way better than that even if I don’t know what you had planned! Thanks for sharing!
These are darling. Just absolutely darling! :o)
Super cute! I especially love the little arrows! So sweet! 🙂
These are so sweet! The arrow is the “icing on the cookie”!! Love it 🙂
You’re so super amazing. Even though they didn’t turn out how you imagined, they are incredibly beautiful!
I happen to think they look like lovely girls in wedding veils! =)
This sounds super delicious. Definitely the most flavorful
They are adorable and cheruby! They did look like angels, but with those arrows they are perfectly cherubic. Accessories totally make the woman, er cherub!
I discovered your site just this week and I have to say you took my breath away. I think these are adorable. You have amazing talent Sweet Sugarbelle!
great ! 😀 i <3 them

They are very sweet.
The fact that you went through all of the trouble to make something special for Valentine’s Day should not be swept under the rug…….if you give these to someone and they make any snarky comments that they don’t resemble THEIR idea of a cupid…..KICK ‘EM IN THE SHIN and walk away with a giant smile on your face knowing that you’ll NEVER have to wrack your brain trying to come up with something special for them for Valentine’s Day EVER again!
Just sayin’………………………
