Tools of a Serial Cookie Baker {Bun Pan Rack}
If you bake lots of cookies and don’t own one of these babies, you need to. This shiny silver contraption is called a bun pan rack.
Once upon a time, if I was decorating cookies, my dining table looked like this.
Or this, if it was dinner time.
Then I got one of these. It was actually a gift from my dad. My dad is kind of an odd duck {I came by it honestly} and likes to bid on Army auctions . Most of the time he wins things like ammo cans and sleeping bags but sometimes he ends up with things like heavy duty bakers racks.
Turns out, this thing sat out at my dad’s workshop for about a year before it occurred to him to mention it to me. Better late than never, right?
Anywho, this rack really changed my life. It kept my work space clear, took up a lot less space, and best of all it was free. But since it weighed more than a Honda and was virtually impossible to hide, I always wished for a baby bun pan rack.
So finally, a few months ago, I broke down and bought the half size. I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner. It came in a little box, was easy to put together, and fit neatly under my work table {or in my laundry room} when I needed it to GO AWAY.
I love that it can also be used with or without wheels.
I skipped them because I prefer the rack on my work table, but either way this is a good thing.
Now to answer the question I’m sure everyone’s wondering about…how much does one of these things cost?
This little wonder will run you from $70-$100 dollars for the half size and between $120-$150 for a full size rack. If you opt for the heavy duty model, they get a little pricier.
I ordered mine from The WEBstaurant store because I live in the middle of nowhere. After the 70 mile drive {one way} with three kids who for some reason are ALWAYS hungry, I figured it was more cost effective for me to spend twenty extra dollars for shipping and call it a day. But if you live in a more urban area, you might want to check local restaurant supply stores, Craig’s list, want ads, or going out of business sales first. You may get the deal of all deals.
You may even be lucky enough to have a handy father in law like my friend Marilyn {Montreal Confections} who built her rack, which you can see HERE.
When my rack isn’t full of cookies its also a great place to store my pans.
Speaking of pans…
I ALWAYS use half sheet pans. I buy them at Sam’s club for about $11 per pack of two. A bun pan rack will hold two half sheet pans or one full sheet per slot.
I own 44 half sheet pans, but since I am no longer a full time baker most of them stored in the garage with my original rack, which I still keep in case I ever need somewhere to put 80 sheets of cookies.
Heck…maybe I’m just sentimental. In any case, take my word. If you’re baking a lot of cookies, this is a very worthwhile investment. Get one today!
It seems to be very practical. When you’re baking as you bake, you’re right to buy good professional material.
I’ve considered one of the smaller ones for a while now! It would sure save space when making lots of things!
One word: WOW. Why didn’t I think of something like this. I always complain about my workspace being too small. Just a little investment and the problem is solved. Thank you for the tip!
But what about your OVEN? I wonder that a lot ! Pls send us a picture 🙂
Very cool! I’ve never seen the tabletop half sized one. And I’m actually surprised at how affordable they are!
I would love one of those, but I just got some of the full sheet pans off of someone closing their store. I have then so I can stack then like you did before. Since I don’t bake nearly as much as you that is good enough for now. But I would love a rack!
I bake on the full 36″ sheets and would be most happy to have a home for them! But I decided I don’t bake enough to justify one of these…which of course doesn’t mean I don’t want one!
Genius $4!+ here. Genius.
I love your new *mini* bun pan rack (and the fact that your Dad bought you the full size one) but honestly, what really caught my eye in this post was your gorgeous table! Swoon 🙂
I have a small one like the one you just got…BEST thing ever LOVE IT !
I have been wanting a rack for some time now. I have cookie sheets a over the place at times. I am definitely going to purchase the half rack size asap. Thanks for sharing.
While I love the pan racks – I REALLY love the art work and table in the background!!! I have a room where the table would work just perfect!!!! 🙂
Yay! Thanks for the tip – as my kitchen AND dining room table look a LOT like your photo! Just in time for Santa 😉
It didn’t even occur to me that there would be a half rack!?! Perfect! I am definitely going to get one for myself! Thanks, Callye! I love your dinner time stack:)
FANTASTIC idea! Thanks for sharing! I have this same problem, lack of space, when baking gingerbread! I MUST find some of these!
OH MY GOODNESS!!! I need to to do this for Christmas time when I go into my cookie baking frenzy! Lasts from Mid/End of November through middle of December before I take these puppies out of my freezer (my freezer is useless to anything other than cookies until after Christmas). If only I didn’t have an APT or maybe they would let me store some things in the basement…..hmmmmmm there’s a thought. OH I need to buy sheet pans and a rack! Why didn’t I think of that?
I kept eyeballing the bun racks at the same place and one day out of the blue a good friend gave me one! She had bought it used and no longer needed it. They are fantastic when you have a load of cookies to work on.
A worthwhile investment if you can do it. Craigslist has also had bakery equipment listed too, so be creative in your search if you want to save a few dollars.
I did not know they make a half size! Fabulous! I must get one. Thanks for sharing!
This is a great idea! I think I need one!
I so need one of these! I admit I had considered it, but assumed they would be expensive so never looked into it. It’s not! So now I shall. Thanks!
I have serious baby bun pan rack envy. What a great size! FYI: say baby bun pan rack 5 times fast. I think it has potential as a tongue twister 😀
I cannot wait to be your roomie! It’s gonna be fun staying up all night saying baby bun pan rack. Actually, I thought of a new karaoke song for the Sugar Sisters team, Sir mix a lot {how appropriate} Baby bun pan rack…lalalalala, can you hear it in your head? I almost said Baby got rack, but that might not go over so well, LOL!
bahahahah. I can definitely hear it in my head. “Don’t want none. Unless you got buns hon.” 😀 Baby got rack has a nice ring to it too! I think a music video is in order…
WOW! What a great idea! Now if I wasn’t moving in a month and leaving my HUGE walk in pantry I just might get one of these. As it is, the new house is much smaller and I don’t even know where my regular cooking utensils will go. Thanks for sharing the info though!
Well, you gone and done it! I’ve been looking for this exact thing and the only one I found was twice the price! Leave it to you to find one in a better price range! I’ve wanted one for a few weeks so we can eat dinner at the kitchen table without moving bunch of stacked pans (without a mishap!) but also, I read that you can cool the cookies in this thing too! How nice it will be to be able to cool the cookies without moving them from the pan to the cooling rack and then back to a pan for decorating! I also ordered their half sheet pans since they were cheaper than Sam’s AND I finally found parchment paper in sheets instead of the rolls and it is SO much cheaper!!! I’m just thrilled and can’t wait to get my new treasures! I’ve been using the cookies sheets without sides to bake on (because they bake nicer than my other pans) and pans with sides on them for decorating and stacking! I can now use one pan for everything and store them easily and neatly and safely and in a small space too! I ordered everything today since I figured that as soon as everyone reads your latest post, they will be sold out! My order has already shipped! Yahoo and Thank YOU!!
I have even more great news…did you know that they make plastic lids for half sheet pans…so that you don’t have to move them at all, you can take them from oven to storage. I love them! http://www.buynordicware.com/index.php?page=Product.Product&externalId=1841
I have the little bun rack and love it. I did a wedding in the spring and boy did it come in handy! Pans and pans of cookies! I think I paid around $80 at a kitchen supply store here in Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley). I’m so glad I finally bought one!
LOVE the bun racks! I’ve drooled over them ever since Janet mentioned hers a while back…If I had room I’d get one – but I don’t do cookies enough to make the room – but I LOVE that idea Callye!
You should put it in as a Christmas request, Cheryl! This one breaks down pretty easily and when you need it, it’s a lifesaver!
Very useful!! I can see why you needed one of these! That is one serious mass of cookies!
I am so making Rob read this 🙂 I use my lower oven to dry my cookies or hold my cookie sheets when not in use. So we can never use it. Just add this bad boy to the list of things I want from Santa 🙂
Wow!! I remember those cookies!! 🙂 🙂
Hahahahahaha! The worst cookie idea I’ve EVER had!
I was *just* telling Philip today that I need one of these NOW for this huge order…
You’re in just the right place to get one!!!
I am, indeed! I’m torn over searching for one in town tomorrow, or just ordering one online for the ease of it all…
My goodness, you are organised. I wish I had a room in the house just for all my baking stuff! One more thing comes in and I think I’ll have to choose between that or myself, ha, ha!
Yes, Ma’am!! Love mine, and HERE’S A TIP: You can bunjee cord a skinny box fan to your rack for when you want to speed cool fresh baked cookies or dry cookies you’ve just iced. Mine cost $5 at Target last year, and it works like a charm. (Helpful hint courtesy of my darling husband.)
That’s genius!!!
I have one and I don’t know how I managed before this baby came into my life. I LOVE it and could kick myself for not ordering it sooner=)
I don’t bake so many cookies but for baking in general it would be awesome. Now I just need a house that could fit one of those and I could buy one of those. *sigh*
That is like the best present EVER!!!!!!
ohh how I wish to be able to have one of these at home when I am decorating cookies. I rent a commercial kitchen for my cake and cookie orders, they have many of these bun pan racks and I love them. It is so easy to store the cookies or letting the cakes cool without worring about space.
Unfortunately I do not have enogh space at home, otherwise i would have like 2 of these babies.
Ooooooh!!! Aaaaaahhhhhh! I’m so jealous!
Hey………don’t I recognize those cookies???????????
🙂
Seriously AWESOME! I love that you have all these pans & the need for the rack. I’m completely inspired.
How do you keep you cookie pans so clean?
I always bake on parchment =)
oh i SOOO need a rack (no pun intended! hahaha) . my table looks exactly the same.. only i dun have such beautiful same sized trays. my oven’s not that big for sheet nor half sheet pans. do they make smaller racks? how would one make custom sized racks anyhoos?
I’m in the process of getting my license to sell baked goods. This just might change my life! I didn’t even know that you could get smaller, less industrialized sizes of these. How freaking cool!
Now, I just need to have my Husband buy me a bigger house!
WOW!!! That’s Awesome!!!!!…..I bought a few Nordic pans online..because I was afraid…of burning cookies..heard horror stories..so the pans at Sams club are just as good????????????they are not tooo thin that my cookies will burn???????always a little leery!!! lolololo..and You have no problems with air circulation using anactual half sheet like in the bakeries???????my stove is not that old…maybe 7 or 8 years at the most…..white with a ..ceran top……………………..Thanks for ur helpful tips!!! =)

Thanks again. I started to use this months ago, I love it. Easier my job a lot. While baking, and while I am decorating.
For those that don’t have a lot of space, you might try a pizza pan rack. I looked at the bun pan racks, too, but just don’t have the storage space. Then I found this:

When I am not using it, I hang it on the wall in my garage.

In my family we do two wornudfel deserts with leftover pumpkin pie filling.1) Mix cream cheese with sugar to taste. Pour pumpkin filling into a sprayed(greased) baking dish. Drop spoonfuls of the cream cheese all around. Bake 350 until done (depends on size of dish) Knife will come out clean there may be moisture, but nothing major sticking to it.2) Mix it with DRAINED crushed pineapple. You can then bakeit as directed above or include the cream cheese as well. This is soooooo goood! (Like pinapple pumpkin cheesecake.Enjoy
Webstaurantstore.com now has a full size rack like these for just $99 dollars! That’s the cheapest I’ve seen and all of the reviews are great! I can’t wait to buy one!
Hi,
I am getting into cookie decorating a little more now. I am wondering how you go about cooling your cookies? I bake mine in a half sheet pan, but I broke them when I tried to remove the parchment paper with the cookies on it to a cooling rack. Do you just leave them on the pan to cool? One more question, if you don’t mind, how do you store them prior to decorating the next day? Thank you for all of the great information!
I leave them on the pan until they are cool and store them in rubbermaid containers until I am ready to decorate.
Hi! I’m sorry that I’m REALLY late to the party! I know you aren’t a full time baker anymore, but when you were, after you had flooded or decorated the cookies and they needed to dry over night, how did you store them? Just open air on the pans in your cooling rack? Or did you have mass quantities of tupperware (like I do) to keep the decorated cookies from getting stale? Thanks!
