Fruitcake Krispie Treats
Okay T minus 2 days till Christmas. Chances are the cookies have been baked and decorated so I’ve decided to share another Christmas sweet, Fruitcake Krispie Treats.
Technically this isn’t a cookie, but it’s close enough. It’s actually one of my Mamaw’s BESTEST recipes and a family favorite so I’m pretty excited to share it with you!
I should tell you though, in my house, we don’t actually call these Fruitcake Krispie Treats. My friend Ali helped me make up the nice name a few days ago. Until then, these were known as Date Nut Balls and Holy Crap.
My family could be the Griswolds, except they live in the country, which multiplies the Christmas Vacation factor exponentially. Imagine Clark and cousin Eddie’s love child, and you’ll have us…
Anyway, I made up a nice name for these because am kind of averted to referring to ANY dessert as BALLS. Especially on the Internet. “Cake Balls” is bad enough, but add the word DATE, and seriously, it’s almost an instant turn-off.
If I said , “Hey, eat date nut balls,” would you?
Yeah, I didn’t think so. I’m pretty sure you’d just snicker like my brothers do.
Anywhoo…if Date Nut Balls isn’t bad enough, a few years ago my youngest brother, Ty, inadvertently helped to give them their second name, Holy Crap.
He was visiting for Christmas a requested a “big” date nut ball, so to be funny, I indulged him. I made a softball sized ball just for him. When I handed it over, he immediately says, “HOLY CRAP!”
I didn’t think much of it until few hours later when Caleb comes to me and asks for some Holy Crap. At first I was a little disturbed that my two year old was walking around saying holy crap , then, after a ten minute game of point and guess, I realized he was asking for a Date Nut Ball.
Of course, I wasn’t thrilled about his lovely new vocabulary word, but I guess it could have been worse. We couldn’t help but laugh and after that name #2 was born.
Now that my kids are old enough to know crap is on the “BAD WORD” list, they often call them, “Holy you-know-what”, but the memory still makes me smile.
Mamaw’s Date-Nut-Balls
Ingredients
- 1 stick {1/2 c} butter
- 1 1/2 c chopped pitted dates
- 1/3 c chopped maraschino cherries
- 3/4 c granulated sugar
- 3 c Rice Krispies cereal
- 1 c pecan pieces
Instructions
- Add butter, cherries, dates, and sugar to a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until a soft paste is formed. Watch carefully and do not overcook. Remove mixture from heat. In the meantime, quickly mix Rice Krispies and pecans in a large bowl sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Pour paste over the cereal and pecans and mix thoroughly. Use a tablespoon sized measuring spoon to shape evenly sized balls then drop onto waxed paper to cool.
This recipe is quick and easy enough to make in 30 minutes. Begin by adding cherries, chopped dates, sugar, and butter to a medium saucepan.
Cook over medium heat. At first when the butter melts it will be watery and look kind of like Christmas barf. Don’t worry. This is normal.
As the dates and sugar cook down, the mixture changes from Christmas barf to a thick sticky paste. This is exactly what you’re going for. Be sure not to cook it too far. If you do, the final product will be tough and sticky.
When the paste is ready, quickly spray a large bowl with non-stick cooking spray and mix the Rice Krispies and pecans.
Pour the paste over the cereal and mix well.
After it’s mixed, it should look like this. At this point I always let it cool for a few minutes before forming it into balls, which is probably a good idea for anyone who’s not into second degree burns.
Finally, I used a tablespoon measuring spoon to form perfect little fruitcake balls. I make mine a little larger than Mamaw did. It makes me feel like I didn’t eat quite as much when four does the job of eight.
Let them cool and you’re ready to go!
I know many of you might freak out about the fact that these have dates in them, but please don’t. Even the pickiest of eaters love them. I often take them to parties without mentioning what’s in them, and by the end three or four people have asked for the recipe.
I hope you enjoy these as much as we do. If you’d like to see more family favorites, my mom does a good job of keeping up with them HERE. She also makes a pretty MEAN fruitcake…I think. We’ve yet to actually try it.
All joking aside, I hope everyone is having a great holiday season. If you haven’t entered my giveaway, there is still time, just click HERE.
Merry Christmas from my family to yours!
I’ve been making a version of these for years and never thought of adding cherries!
Neat! A great new krispie treat for me!
Such a cool idea!! I’m with you…anything with balls in the name will not be eaten by me.
Not even cheese ball.
Your family cracks me up!!
About ten years ago, I started making peppermint bark. (White almond bark with crushed candy canes sprinkled all over the top) Having extra chocolate candy coating left from another project, I drizzled all over the top and was really happy with the finished product. My ten year old daughter came in, took one look and said “it looks like an elf threw up.” From there on out, it was called Elf Barf in our family.
My mother passed down a cookie recipe that we call “Fruit Rocks” (no, they are not hard like rock candy). They are kinda similar to these except they are a “cookie” and use only candied cherries (green and red) and pineapple, pecans, butter, flour, sugar, and cooking sherry. The more cooking sherry, the better, lol! They are yum yum yummy. Way better than Fruit Cake ever thought about being.
Looks Yummy and I can’t wait to try
Awesome, the second name is definitely better than the first LOL. Merry Christmas and as always try to take it “easy”
My grandma makes something similar. No cherries, though, and they’re rolled in coconut. We call them Date Rice Krispie Balls. Yes, balls. 🙂
My little boy (less than 2 years) apparently overheard me saying “jackass” (more than once) while driving. (Yeah, I know, *some* mother, huh?) Anyway, one night, we went out for supper and somebody abruptly took a parking place for which I thought I had been aiming. I gasped. From the backseat, a thin little voice piped up, “Jackass!” Needless to say, that was the last time I used *that* word! 😛
Oh, dear! The smiley face looks like he’s broadly smiling but I was trying to make the tongue-sticking-out face of embarassed remorse! Yeesh.
HAHAAA!! That’s great. Oh, kids.
Ha! I needed the laughs from this wonderfully funny post. “Christmas barf” and “Holy You-Know-What” – made my day! (The treats sound tasty, too!)
These look great, my dad would LOVE them, maybe I will make him a batch for Christmas. He loves fruitcake!
They look great! I make a cheese appy of goat cheese and cream cheese rolled in Pistachios. My husband is officially turned off when I ask him if he wants some Goat Balls. Lol.
LOL is right!
i would so eat your balls (LOL, i really need to get over calling any food balls too—we went to a restaurant in nyc, called the meatball shop—if you go to their website eventually a voice comes on and says….”mmmmm baaaallllsssss”….so there you go! they look so pretty in the cupcake liners too!
This post made me laugh! I love the story of your brother and these and I love that you used the words Christmas Barf! I also love dates, pecans, cherries….I’ve never seen a recipe like this and I love it. I am DONE my Christmas baking for this year but these are definitely on my list for next. Thanks for sharing it Callye.
Hi SSB! This recipe sounds like something my family is going to LOVE! Nuts + Dates + Rice Krispies… some of their faves… thanks for sharing! xox
These look very similar to a recipe my grandma had for Strawberry cookies. I think the only difference might be instead of cherries, my grandma put in coconut. shaped them into strawberry form instead of balls, rolled them in red sugar & added icing leaves. Love em!
Wow, you managed to include the words balls, crap and barf all in the same post, and yet somehow these still look good to me!
My cousin’s wife just introduced me to your blog when I asked her how she learned to make such amazing sugar cookies. I’ve spent a good chunk of the afternoon surfing through your posts in amazement. THANK YOU for sharing your tips and talents with we, the internets. My girls are 2 and 3, so I’m sure we have years of cookie love ahead of us. It’s gonna be great!
ok I had no idea your mom had a blog!! That is so awesome!! I checked it out and am hooked. I love all her stories!!
Those little guys are so adorable! What an awesome way to make fruitcake actually tasty and delicious 🙂
I’m sure my kids will like this fruitcake krispie and I will definitely try this one.
LOL Did you really say Christmas Barf? 😀 The finished product looks really good – almost like a granola with Rice Krispies instead of oatmeal. I was wondering about the cherries, are they the candied ones you can pretty much only get this time of year or are they the jarred kind you use for cocktails & ice cream sundaes?
Seriously, what is it with people and dates? My Grandmother’s stuffed cookies (made only at Christmastime) have a cooked filling made from dates and raisins. I quit telling people what was in them because they always react so negatively (“Dates!?!?!”). However, once people taste them, they want the recipe.
Christmas BARF! ha ha ha! I’m still laughing at that! Add that to the title and I’m sure you’ll have people lining up: Holy Crap Christmas Barf Nutty Date Balls. mmmmm sounds mouthwatering 😀 These really look amazing and I will have to make them in the next couple of days. I have all the ingredients on hand (I always have dates I LOVE them) and I can’t wait to try them. I’ll just keep the optional title to myself.
Merry Christmas Callye! Some of the best candy comes in balls! BTW – I love dates too1
Merry Christmas, Kim!!!
Oh, I am so making these!
Perhaps I should tell people that they are “Christmas Barf Balls”…
Perhaps not…
Thanks for making me smile so many times!
These look so yummy i just had to make them. Are they supposed to stick together firmly once made? mine kind of fall apart, im wondering if i didn’t heat up the sugar mixture long enough? They are yummy either way though.
Cook em just a little bit longer next time. It took me a couple of times to get them perfect 🙂
LOL we would so call them holy crap balls, so funny!
I love fruit cake, thank for sharing!
Merry Christmas!!!
Funny family stories (and treats) are the best kind! Thanks for the link to your mom’s blog; I about died reading about your Richard Doll! 🙂 Merry Christmas, Callye! XO, Sue
P.S. I like dates!
Now here is a way I can finally enjoy fruitcake!!!
Have a merry Day tomorrow, Callye! Happy Christmas!
must be something about grandmas and date balls, ha. We grew up in the country as well… Clark and Eddie’s love child and my famiy were probably neighbors. Every Christmas Edna’s Krispy Date Coconut Balls (Grandmother’s differed from your’s in that she didn’t include the nuts or cheeries, but there were eggs in the date mixture, and the balls were rolled in coconut after forming) would make an appearance and we all loved them. Once I moved away and started cooking for my own family and making food gifts, I was always amazed when people scrunched up their noses to the name “date” anything. Best Christmas cookie ever. I still make them and gift them to my brothers and sister. Even though Grandmother isn’t with us anymore, I think it brings back a bit of her every single Christmas to all of us.
These look delicious, what a fun way to make a fruitcake, with Krispies!
These look delicious!!! Ill try them 🙂
