Wise Old Owl Cookies
Normally, I am a pretty positive person. Maybe even infuriatingly positive. You know, the person that when your leg falls off says, “No biggie, at least you have another one.”
But every once in a while even I get in a funk. In my house we just say I’m having an “I hate everything” day. I had one recently. It kinda went like this…I hate my hair. I hate my body. I hate mean internet trolls. I hate booster shots. I hate school registration. I hate cleaning my house. I hate the sun. I hate the heat. I hate tax-free weekend. I hate sore teeth. I hate diets. I hate couch to 5K. And most of all I hated these cookies.
I know that they’re fine, but when I set out to make them I envisioned cute and innovative. Instead I got literal and predictable. On my “I hate everything day” I would’ve been happy to have chunked them into the trash. A day or so later, I’m still not loving them, but I thought I would toss them out there so maybe someone else could take a stab at a cutesy version.
I used the same fish cutter that I used for these Lorax cookies for my wise old owls. You can get the set HERE.
To make these you will need:
- Brown outline and flood icing
- Blue outline and flood icing
- Black, white, and ivory 20-second icing
- Stiff ivory piping icing and a #101 tip
- Yellow piping icing
Begin by outlining the cookie as pictured below. It’s a bit easier if you start with the wings.
Next fill in the outlined spaces leaving the tummy area open.
Let that dry, then add the base of the eyes. It worked best for me to add two dots of ivory 20-second icing and coax them together using a toothpick.
Let the ivory icing dry, then add a dot of white and then black to finish up the eyes. Finally use yellow piping icing to add a beak and toes.
To finish up, use stiff white icing to add ruffly tummy feathers {Ali-Bee’s Bake Shop has a great ruffle tutorial here} and a #1.5 to add the rest of the details.
Like I said…not exactly what I had in mind, but they’ll work til I get my attitude right? Right?
In the meantime, I’ll focus on the positive. My hair isn’t that bad. Bodies can be fixed. There are more nice people on the Internet than mean. Booster shots beat polio and whooping cough by a long shot. I am thankful my kids go to a good school. I am glad I live in a nice roomy house, even if it’s hard to dust. The sun is not so bad, and when it is, I have AC. Tax free weekend is just like any other weekend at the mall. Sore teeth will pay off in the long run. Diets suck, but at least I’ve never gone hungry . And I am so thankful to be able bodied enough to do couch to 5K, even if I almost die every time. And these cookies, not what I had in mind, but definitely not AWFUL.
Hope everyone is having a good, positive week!
If you like owl cookies be sure to check out these adorable ideas:
Oh wow. You need a big bite of a reality sandwich!!! I can’t imagine anything cuter…seriously….they are what I would DREAM about sending to the teachers at school. I could not love them more!
LD hug, V!
Love those caterpillars with glasses! So cute!
I love them! The owls are perfect, and I love the busses and the bookworms as part of the whole set!!
Shake off the funk and you’ll see these are super cute! P.S. Everyone gets an “I hate everything” day every once in a while!
♥
They’re adorable!
i think these are soo adroable!
Loooooove! Great post and adorable cookies! The school bus could also make a cute hippo 🙂
I love these owls!! That owl driving the bus is brilliant and I imagine the worm working the door for the kiddos to get on! Everyone of these cookies are adorable! I agree with Glory! We all have days like that and hopefully yours will be gone before bedtime!! We love you Sugar Belle!!
These are adorable, if I ever make anything that cute it will be a very good day!!
We are all hardest on ourselves. Those cookies are to darling! Really they are adorable. Love that you used the fish cutter.
Not cute and innovative? What? You used a fish cutter to make the cutest studious owl! A fish cutter!!! I would have made a fish out of that fish cutter. Oh and you also made a Lorax out of that cutter too. These are innovative and cute and you are innovative and cute.
I do understand the “I hate everything days”. I have them so often. There are days that I question why I blog and I want to give it all up and go back to being normal me. I think a lot of it has to do with my health issues. When you suffer from pain it totally affects your mood. Thankfully I had a procedure today that seems to be working. I already feel a change in my attitude and my pain in my wrist is nearly gone. I’m so hopeful this will work and last for awhile. That’s not to say that I won’t still have “I hate everything days” but hopefully they will be few and far between.
The most awesome thing is that you allowed yourself to have one of those days and feel the emotions and then you quickly turned back into your positive self and put things back in perspective.
P.S. I’m so glad I haven’t had to deal with internet trolls yet. Some people just don’t have anything better to do.
They are beyond adorable! You must throw up when you see mine. Ha ha!
We all have those days!! You should see the Koala cookies I have just done – hideous! I love these – really love the bus….and innovative as heck! I see a snowman cutter got used again as well!! Pick yourself up dust yourself off (all that icing sugar and all) and know you are fabulous!!
Aww I think you’re being too hard on yourself! I love them and I’ll take them off your hands any time you want!! =)
Hey you! We’re gonna have a luchdate soon!
lunchdate*
Are you kidding?? I always think how wonderful it must be to be you and wake up to the most wonderful comments on your blog on a regular basis! When I get 10 comments I think “I’m having a Sugarbelle day”! 🙂 And all those comments are well deserved – your cookies are clever, creative and always cute! That bookworm I’m sure is smarter then me! 🙂
You’re normal. I’m pretty sure everyone has those days. But I really can’t understand why anyone would or want to troll here. There’s nothing bad to say at all and I also don’t understand why you dislike these cookies, they’re so darn cute and love that you’ve creatively used a fish cutter to create them. I wish I could see things through your eyes like that.
If you think your cookies are bad, please don’t go look at mine. You’ll probably snigger for days. Scratch that, weeks on end. Months… years?! LOL. 🙂
You may not like the big owl cookies. But, you hit the ball out of the cuteness park with the owl driving the school bus. It more than makes up for the literal owl cookie.
I just love owls and these are adorable! It always amazes me how you rethink cookie cutters…awesome!
I think these are lovely and fun, but I can understand feeling disappointed when your cookies aren’t what you had hoped for and/or envisioned. Tomorrow is always a better day!
How long have you been doing couch to 5k? I’ve thought about it before, but the thought of the neighborhood seeing me huffing and puffing frightens me a little 🙂 I think you’re awesome for doing it!
Aww I think they are cute! I’d eat them! Well….I wouldn’t want to eat them because they are so cute but I bet they still taste good too!
You’re so creative with those cookie cutters! I love the ruffled feathers made with the #101 tip!
These are just too cute had to pin’em : )
Aren’t internet trolls the worst? I don’t know why people feel so free to say online what they would never say in person.
Love the cookies by the way!
I am dying. These are absolutely adorable. The owl and worm in the school bus… AMAZING! So cute Caylee 🙂
I think these are adorable!!
Or, you might just need to find some outside ienrtests. A local plumber I’ve used is a big fan of off-roading. What can a plumber do to change his job?Yesterday I noticed his big-dog truck has a new sticker on it, he apparently has started an off-road apparel company with the same name as his plumbing company. And I can guess he made his real money in the house he bought for an office for the businesses.Maybe %80 of the jobs are going to be unlovable, and rather than trying to tilt an edifice with a paperclip, happiness might be found through identifying and accepting that which one cannot change.I know only one person who I grew up with who has lasted at a company for 30 years (including one boss who was a bit off and is on death row for a notorious child rape/murder). My friends secret? He has a fairly pedestrian outlook on life.word: urobvdi
Bad days happen. Boo! But your cookies, though maybe not what you envisioned, look beautifully executed. I hope you feel proud of both your cookie skill and talent. Us newbies are working to achieve what you’ve got down pat and truly think you’re the cat’s pajamas 😉
A few months ago you send me a email with this: “don’t give up” that day was my “hate day” but your words changed the hate for a big smile. THIS COOKIES ARE AMAZING LIKE YOU!
these owls ARE cute and are as awesome as u and all your other awesome cookie creations! thanks for sharing and hope u get ur positive feelings back soon – u bring so much positivity to people like me who drool over the pics and squeal (inside and quietly) with excitement every time you have a new blog instalment for us! thanks and xoxo!
I love how you used that cutter – again! The owls are adorable!
I am thankful for all that your share. I wish I had small kids to make back to school cookies for! My kids are grown, I miss being room mom and PTA mom and team mom! And where was Pinterest for ideas when my kids were little??… You are always so helpful to all of us cookiers and I appreciate your talent and your tutorials…
I think they are completely adorable! No need to hate… love!
Oh my gosh, Callye, I suppose it’s all relative…If I made THESE cookies, it would be “I love everything” day!!! The owl is amazing and the bus is phenomenal, but I am in LOVE with the bookworm! He is sooooooo CUTE!
You are a GENIUS! Has anyone ever told you that? I’m SURE they have. Because you ARE! <3
They’re precious. And the owl and the bookworm in the bus was a stroke of genius!
As Garfield the cat says: Diet is DIE with a T at the end, but it’s the necessary evil of all cookie creators. (especially those of us who choose to eat all the messed up ones) And you’re just AWESOME!! The owl is as cute as can be but I loved the PENCIL! You’re a master at color and creativity, I’m inspired with every new blog you post. Thanks for all your efforts at training us novice cookie decorators.
I know those days… But i think your cookies are awesome, they would be soo perfect for a friend of mine… 😀
I think they look great! A million times better than anything I could come up with
Quite nice, actually. The owl – maybe in different colors?, the bookworm, so studious, the bus – don’t know how you do it. You are more than an ‘artist’, you are a genius. Even the pencil…my goodness! I’d love to be a fly on the wall in your kitchen just to observe and learn.
Okay, so I’m still really emotional from my grandbaby being born, but I cried reading the end of your post! I thought it was SOOOO stinkin adorable that in the 5 minutes that I read your post and oohed and aaahed over your gorgeous cookies that you had a complete attitude adjustment! I’m sure it actually took longer than that, but wow. That is really some super happiness you have if you can turn yourself around and find the good in all those things so easily. You’re awesome Callye and always such an inspiration. Those school cookies are ADORABLE! I laughed when I saw that you weren’t happy with them. I can’t even imagine. I have that exact fish cutter. Even with that, I could never make that adorable owl that you made. And the caterpillar and the bus. Just waaaay too adorable! You’re amazing my friend!
Genius ! Once again!!!! :o)
aw I have those days too, they suck. But your cookies are really cute, even if they are not cutesy.
Oh my gosh!! You are just wonderful!! I was just telling my partner how I’m becoming obsessed with checking your blog several times a day for new entries (that’s not weird, right?!). I was amazed at these owls then I read your post. You have such a talent, chin up!!
If yo use a fish cutter for anything besides a fish it is not predictable! You are way too hard on yourself. The owl is adorable and that school bus is a gem!
I think the owls are charming! And I get the whole hate-everything feeling. Power through and the sun will shine again!!
Wow your cookies are amazing and you have a lot of talent. Everyone is allowed a bad day once in awhile, but those cookies would sure cheer me up!
Funny what we see in our own work. I logged onto your blog and saw the owl and before reading your comments, my first thought was…”Now she is good, these are adorable” Tried your angry bird cookies and Lorax cookies over the weekend, not quite up to your standards but I’m working on it.
Oh Sweet Sugar – if you only knew how talented you are. If wishes would come true I would wish for just a fraction of your artist talent and inspiration! I loved everything about the cookies but mainly putting the owl and worm in the bus!!! I would never have thought to do that – brilliant! And let’s not forget about the precision that your cookies have – try as I might, mine never look so PERFECT – each line and flood is just perfect. I will give you the opportunity to be “blue” – we all have those days, but take heart in knowing that you are not only talented, but to share your talent so willing with others is really extraordinary and generous! I read your blog every single day and sometimes check multiple times a day just to see what treasures may await me and always just a little sad when there is nothing new. You brighten all of my days – so I thank you!
Oh my gosh, I love these! I love how you use different cookie cutters to make something new. It’s brilliant. Your talent still amazes me.
I think the owl is PERFECT! You are awesome at what you do and such a creative inspiration 🙂
I seriously cracked up over your hates lol. Hilarious in so many ways. And these owls are beyond adorable.
I also loved the owls! I look forward to each and every one of your cookies. They are always inspiring!!!
Hi,
I’m sorry about my english, I’m spanish and I’m a superfan of your website. Today I am happy because I’m doing owls too in my blog with a flight cutter …. but it’s thanks of you …. you’re a great inspiration!!!
¡¡¡¡Hasta la vista!!!
Chin up! Your cookies are ADORABLE!!! The plate is amazing, as they always are. To those of us who follow you daily, hoping for a new post, and attempting to make cookies, but ending up on a sarcastic ‘Nailed It’ pin on pinterest, we are humbled by your owls. Even on an ‘i hate everything day’ We love your talent! Thanks for always sharing, even when you don’t feel like they are up to par.
You are the most talented decorator I have ever seen. Chin up, we appreciate you very much. 🙂
Barb
Please, take a look at this plate of cookies again! They are absolutely adorable, funny and I love the way you combine the colors!!! We all have this kind of days, don’t worry. The amazing thing is that you created these in one of these days, hahaha! I think I wouldn’t even wanted to cook or paint!!! Conclusion: SugarBelle, YOU ROCK even in “I hate everything” days!!! <3
WHAT, They are great. Maybe the owl isn’t your fav, but him in the bus along with the book worm, make him work soooooo well in this platter. I would love to be able to make him, let along invision him looking differently. Creative people are the hardest on themselves. It’s the “what’s in my mind” version that doesn’t make it to the cookie that makes us disappointed. And everyone deserves at least one “I hate everything” day a month, right…..we’re women! Thanks for sharing and would love to see how you made the school bus!!!!! Absolutely adorable
Lately I have been having one of those days that you are describing. Specially with mean people, my belly rolls, my kids latest accident, not havinf time for anything, and so on. But like you said at the end of the post,it’s not that bad after all. I try to focus on the positive side of life, LOL, like coming to sites like yours and be inspired…or sad because I will never accomplish cute cookies like the one’s you make.
We enjoy your work so much, think of all the people that enjoy from your talent and free tutorials.
PS: I love, love these cookies, I could kiss them instead of eating them, if you feel they are in your way ship them to NJ, there is a big belly here that could use some sweetness.
Have a happy day Callye
If I have half your talent I would be ecstatic…I am still working on my icing consistency (and I have practiced for 2 months). Anyway, awesome job on the cookies.
Man! Just to be able to look at a fish cookie cutter and see an owl with a graduation cap on. You are beyond amazing! I love, love, love your work and your creative mind. And that you are a fellow Texan 🙂
It’s great to read something that’s both enjoyable and provides prmatagisdc solutions.
They’re darling! (I feel this irrational urge to “defend” the cute cookies! 😉 ) Love the tire tread detail!
This back to school collection is nothing short of adorable Callye and your owls are wonderful. Hope you are having a better day and able to see your wonderful talents as much as your admirers do.
Your posting on August 15, 2012 has a picture of the wise old owl cookies with a little g reen worm wearing glasses.I would love to know how you did that little worm, Is that a particular cutter or did you creatively use another cutter, if so which one and how. (Kinda looks like a snowman). I have loved your blog ever since I found it back in March . I have always been a baker but now am a certified cookie lover!. My daughter and I are learning together with your on line help. Thanks so
much for a wonderful new past time. And what a wonderful way to spend time with my daughter.Keep up with beautful pleasures of providing such a relaxing blog. Becky
I think we’re all allowed to have those kind of “I hate everything days”! I know I do! I love at the end how you put a positive spin on all those hateful thoughts. Way to go. That’s the only true way to move past them!
In my opinion these owl cookies are quite adorable. Don’t know quite what else you were envisioning but I think they’re really cute!!!
Aw Callye! <3 Everyone has those days; don't beat yourself up about it. :-/ I'm glad you're reminding yourself of the positive things, even if it takes a while to switch up the mindset. For the record, I LOVE these cookies; I think they're absolutely perfect and adorable! The owl and worm in the bus is precious! 😀
I am faced with those sort of days too, my dear Callye. I think you snapped out of it in a lovely way and there is so much to LOVE about these wise old owl cookies. The plate of back to school cookies is precious! Wish you lived closer so I could share some with you:)xx
You’re wonderful. Your tutorials are wonderful. You’re unbelievably talented and creative and I just appreciate everything you share. Take that, mean internet trolls.
Thanks very much!
Callye you need a different perspective. Mine maybe? These cookies ARE adorable, learned but still with a touch of whimsy and ones you need to be so proud of. I LOVE them!
But yes, we all have those days when we get a bit down…and it’s good to remind ourselves of all that we have to be thankful for; it’s obvious you have a lot so hoping today is a much brighter day!
Okay, I don’t have time to read 69 comments, but I have to jump in and say that I can’t believe you aren’t 100% satisfied with these cookies! As a creative soul, I’m sure you almost always wish SOMETHING had turned out a little differently, but from the reader’s standpoint, these are amazing. 🙂
omg! these are adorable! how cold you hate them! i especially like the owl and the book worm in the bus! SOOOO cute. you are an artist and i love seeing what you do. chin up!
I know what you mean when your cookies are cuter in your head than they turn out in real life. Unfortunately for me, this is the case with every cookie I make, and yet other people are always impressed. You are so skilled that your disappointing cookies are so much cuter than anything I have ever done–never doubt your talent!
You never cease to amaze me with how you can see other figures in cookie cutters! I love your imagination!!!
I think they are cute! And the original and cutesy could come in just by using different colors. You know how the cute owl bedding and fabric tends to have the owls in pink and orange and turquoise?
First of, these owls are friggin’ adorable!
Secondly, I have days where I hate everything, too, but there’s something that’s helped me a little so I thought I’d share.
You are beautiful. Even if you’re in the middle of a fitness journey, even if you have goals for how you want to look and feel, don’t forget that you are beautiful now. Look in that mirror, embrace all of yoursef – even the bits you’d like to change – and know that what you see is yours, and uniquely part of you, and absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.
… I hope that helps a bit 🙂
These are soooo adorable… I fancy them cute I wish i new how to b a ke cookies or decorate them soo nicely …What kind of icing is that on them, home made or stroe boguth or what I am so cookie dumb!
Perfectly adorable and for back to school treats. 😀
I think you must have cookie dysmorphia disorder. Those are the most obnoxiously adorable magazine perfect cookies I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Pretty much every baking thing I’ve ever done pales in comparison to them. If I made those I would be walking around with them, showing strangers and saying things like, “Hey, check out my owl cookie. Yeah. I made that. Oh, no, it wasn’t hard, cause I have super mad cookie skillz.”
But seriously, those are fab. My kids would freak out if I ever did anything that cool for them.
Adoro tu trabajo, es una gran fuente de inspiración
