Scarecrow Cookies
I think I’ve whined and complained about mentioned it before, but in West Texas we don’t have a true fall. As soon as the leaves begin to turn and a chill enters the air, a huge gust of wind comes along and blows the leaves {and everything else that isn’t nailed down} away.
If it’s autumn I want, I pretty much have to make it myself. So, I do.I love that these cookies can be made with several different cutters. I used a couple of snowmen I snagged on Ebay, my favorite Wilton ice cream cutter, and a skull. Even if you don’t have these exact shapes you’ve probably got something that will work.
To make these cookies you will need:
- Tan piping and flood icing
- Ivory piping and flood icing
- Dark brown piping icing
- Red piping icing
- Stiff gold piping icing
- Black piping icing
- Red/pink lustre dust
- Orange 20-second icing
*This is a ton of colors, but since I was making several different cookies I was able to use them on other designs as well.
Begin by outlining and flooding the hat as pictured below.
I decided to stencil a basketweave texture onto the hat but there are several ways to create a similar look. If you missed my post on stenciling with magnets, click here. If you’re not comfortable with stenciling at all, try swirling thicker icing like I did here.
Next, outline and flood the face.
The face will need to be completely dry before moving on, so add the hatband and sunflower details while you wait. They can be piped directly onto the cookie, or made ahead of time and attached with icing. For more information on piping royal icing sunflowers, click here.
When the face is completely dry it’s time to move on to the final details. First use lustre dust and a Q-tip for rosy cheeks. To achieve this color I mixed red Wilton pearl dust with autumn blaze.
Finish with a triangular nose and straw hair. I used a #16 star tip.
I love how four completely different cutters can produce equally adorable scarecrow cookies.
Like I said, I didn’t mind mixing so many colors since there were other cookies involved.

I was itching to see what that “sloppy stenciling” you referred to a few posts back ended up being. Nothing you do is sloppy so I knew you made it work beautifully. I’m impressed as always.
Just adorable! What brilliant attention to detail 🙂
Once again, this is another adorable cookie!
Hello! How do you make that beautiful orange-pumpkin color?
Adorbs!!! Right down to the baby black birds!
Can I ask a question that has nothing to do with this post? Which brand of black sugar pearls do you use for eyes sometimes? I tried them for the first time for my GO BO cookies and when I got to the sale was sad to see how awful the black color bled from them. 🙁 Back to piping eyes for me, if that’s what will always happen! Just wondering…
I just LOVE your fall platter and every single cookie on it! I love the sweet faces on your pumpkins and the texture on the hats is fantastic!
Eeeee! These are adorable! The texture on the hat is great and the scarecrow smile is so sweet! And as usual, I really appreciate all the cutter options!
I have always loved your scarecrow made from the cupcake cutter. I love this new scarecrow with his sunflower and stenciled hat!
Oops, I meant icecream cone cutter!
LOVE! My favorite is the Wilton cone cutter scarecrow! When you give tips like this, I add it to my spreadsheet of “Cutter Options”. I have a column where I put the cutter and list all of the cookies you could make using that cutter and who I learned it from. I know, a little obsessive but I’ll never remember all these great tips and it will drive me nuts to comb 100 sites to find it!
Thanks Callye, you always come up with the greatest ideas.
I love these so much! It’s amazing to me how you can “see” beyond the cookie cutter’s intended shape. I wonder f there is list of shapes that can be altered into other shapes somewhere.
I think you just changed my life with the Q-Tip!!! Slaps forehead……
So cute as always!!! The royal icing stencil makes for a perfect burlap weave.
How is it possible that you create such cuteness time and time again? The truest form of a cookie ninja!
Hey! I’ve got to be one of your biggest fans! I love reading the tutorials but lately every time I’m on your site on my iPhone it redirects me to my iTunes app. This happens at least 4-5 times while I read just one tutorial. Is this some new type of advertising or is something wrong with my phone (only happens here?)
Thank you!
Kate
I’m having the same problem. I’ll check on that. It’s annoying, huh?
Cutest scarecrow cookies ever! I want to gobble them up!
If it makes you feel any better, here in Maryland in the central region (near the skinny part of the state) we’ve had a pretty lousy fall. The temperature has basically been either cold below average or warm below average, it can’t make up it’s mind. Also, the colors of the leaves aren’t anything to brag about, I’ve seen MUCH better years than this and others are saying the same. If the summer is too wet, too dry, too cool or too hot (I know, that sounds crazy doesn’t it) the leaves just don’t change as beautifully. The worst is when we have a too dry summer, then we have the type of fall you’re describing. I guess we all can’t have those beautiful Vermont falls we see on calendars. One thing I did love as a child and still miss is the ability to run and jump in piles of leaves. To this day I still love the smell of burning leaves (something rarely enjoyed now that I live within town limits where open burning is banned).
What a beautiful set of cookies, just adorable. I did miss the post about stenciling with magnets, but sounds like a great tip. I am going to read it now.
Hugs!!
Good grief, Girl! You are just brilliant!
I guess “cute-a-crows” don’t have a great ring to it like “scarecrows”, but that’s what they are… CUTE! Love the stencil texture and the rosy cheeks just seals the deal!
If you need someone to take these off your hands I would even pay for shipping!!! Would love to sink my teeth into these adorable scarecrows, sunflowers, birds and pumpkins!! Email me and I will send you my address!!!
Seriously though, these are awesome and if you sell them I would love to buy some.
Thanks,
Barbara macaskill
You know what I love most? Those cute little black birds! So stinkin’ cute! 🙂
Now these are something to crow about – my favorites of favorite scarecrows!!
Ok. These are darling! Amazing as usual.
I normally think scarecrows and kind of creepy and just a little bit terrifying. But these guys are stinking ADORABLE!!!! I love that squished face. So so so cute!!! You have the best ideas!
And those tiny little black crows?! LOVE!!!

These have to be one of the cutest cookies I have ever seen!
I think your 2011 scarecrow cookies are just as cute but I’m in loooove with the little blackbirds. Ugh, I want one. Right now.
By the way, I blame you for my cookie cutter obsession. It’s your fault because I see other cookies in obvious cutters. Yes, you’re the cause of me constantly combing sites for new cutters. Now there’s that whole cookie cutter buy/sell/trade Facebook site that lures me in to feed my addiction too. I’m not hating on you, just pointing out a fact. Without you, I wouldn’t even decorate cookies. What am I trying to say? Thank you Callye! Thank you for turning me on to a great hobby.
Adorable!!! Love the hat.
I’m in love with the him! I had to share the love with my best friend. Thanks for the inspiration. Does your brain ever hurt? :). You are fabulous.
Calley, I love your scarecrow cookies and are determined to make them. However, I have searched the internet high and low for the basket weave stencil to no avail. Please help:-)!

I love these! They are definitely going on my “to make” list for fall!
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Mr. Scarecrow is so cute.
Quick question please. My cookies always seem to leave the outline showing. Am I using too large a tip? Any suggestions as to how I can get the smooth no outline cookies likes yours?
Thank you
I just love this cookie. Can you please tell me how long you have to let the icing dry before you can do the stencil work. Is it overnight or just several hours? Thanks!!!
