Pinterest Cookie-d {Sunburst Cookies}
Today I am going to revisit a series that I have been working on with my friend Ashleigh, of Bee in Our Bonnet, Pinterest Cookie-d. For this series we’ve both selected a few of our favorite Pinterest trends, and translated them into cookies. My last cookie was completely inspired by a single picture…
These paper rosettes were used as a backdrop for a beautiful dessert table I saw on Hostess with the Mostess. Instantly, I knew I had to make them into cookie form. This is what I came up with.
Even though the paper versions are called rosettes, I named these sunburst cookies because that made more sense to me.
Making these is super duper simple. All you need is:
- piping and flood icing in white, black, or gray
- sugar pearls in white, black or silver {dragees}
- Lustre spray in gold, silver, or pearl
To begin, outline the the cookie as shown below. Use tweezers to add a dragee to the center of the sunburst. It’s best to use a dragee the same color as the flood icing if possible. Next, fill in alternating sections. Let the first sections dry, then fill in she rest of the cookie. This will create a nice dimensional look. When the base icing has set, you can pipe a few dots around the dragee to dress it up a little. Let the cookie dry overnight.
The next day, spray your dry cookie with lustre spray. Hold the can 8-10 inches away from the cookie, and move your hand in slow sweeping motions as you spray. This will give you smooth even coverage.
Let the cookies dry for a minute or two and you are done.
The neat thing about these lustre sprays is that the base color will affect the color of the sprayed cookie. For example, the gunmetal-ish colored cookie is actually a black cookie sprayed with silver. You should think about experimenting with this if you can. There are endless color possibilities.
I’ve personally tried three brands of lustre spray, PME, Duff, and Chefmaster. The PME is pricey, and I have to order it online, but it is my favorite BY FAR. The Duff is good, available locally, and more affordable than the PME, but it isn’t quite as shiny.
As for the Chefmaster, I’ve tried two cans and have not been pleased. I may be doing something wrong, but every time I have tried it, I have ended up with a rough powdery finish rather than the smooth shiny finish I get from the PME and Duff brands.
Be sure not to confuse lustre spray with color spray, they are two different things.
Also, don’t forget to visit my cookie pal Ashleigh at Bee in our Bonnet. She made some silhouette cookies I am sure you’ll love.

Love these! They are gorgeous!
Amazing, as usual. I clicked on the link to the lustre sprays which then led me to the Americolor Metallic & Pearl Airbrush food color set. I have seen these used on cookies and applied with just a paintbrush. I’d love to see what you would do with them. I think I’m going to place an order . . .
these are beautiful. The progress picture of the unfinished black one looks so cool too! What a great design.
Gorgeous! You make everything so simple, I love the way your brain works!
I love your Pinterest cookies. So unique and so beautiful.
I must show my appreciation to you for bilniag me out of this difficulty. Because of browsing throughout the the net and obtaining views which are not productive, I thought my entire life was well over. Being alive without the presence of solutions to the problems you’ve sorted out by means of your main short article is a crucial case, and the ones that might have adversely damaged my entire career if I had not noticed your web site. Your own personal natural talent and kindness in dealing with all the pieces was important. I am not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t come upon such a stuff like this. I’m able to now look ahead to my future. Thank you so much for your impressive and sensible guide. I will not hesitate to propose the website to any person who desires counselling on this matter.
I love the dimension you always have with your cookies.
Callye – I am always so excited to see what cookies you have created – these are just stunning!
Hey C — Seeing as you like to use the cans of spray, have you seen the spray gun attachment that Krylon has on the market? It’s super neat — attachs to any spray can (the PME cans work great with it) and turns it into a Spray Gun! The nice thing about it is that you have so much more control with it. You know how it’s often difficult to get a light spray from the edible sprays — not anymore! Even the lightest touch is smooth and fluid! No more hand (finger!) fatigue! I bought mine at Michaels but you can probably buy them in a variety of places.

(Gosh – sounds like I’m a spokeperson for them!! Funny how we can react when we really like a product! Maybe I should write them!!)
Ahhhhhhhh Jody!!! That’s a GREAT idea! I didn’t know there was such a thing!!!
Love these!
Love these! What great inspiration for a holiday party!
I just made paper sunbursts for a baby shower, and let me just say, I wish I had made these cookies instead! They took forever… and I’m sure didn’t taste as good. 😉
I want to make a ton of them for my daughters room but I keep chickening out, lol!
You did it again! The cookies are gorgeous!

I love this series of Pinterest inspired cookies. I’d love to be a fly on the wall of your creative mind just to see how you come up with such fun ideas other than the Pinterest inspired ones. Did that even make sense? 🙂
I love the metallic sheen, these would be perfect for the holidays.
I have been eyeballing this spray and all I could see were old lady roses. These are so simple and gorgeous! Thanks for opening my eyes!
Ooh, and for Christmas, you could paint them red and they would look just like poinsettias! So pretty!
And the red is SOOOOOOOOOO pretty and shimmery too!
These are gorgeous!! I especially love the silver 🙂
Beautiful as always!!!! This may seem like a “dumb” question, but who cares I’m asking anyway 🙂 I just wonder that the dimension you always seem to get with you cookies is that a result of the outlining????? Or are you just like a super hero of cookie making 🙂 Probably both…ha ha ha
beautiful, you have been wonderful, kisses
Just wanted to let you know that these cookies were featured on the Diva Entertains blog yesterday… THANKS!!
love these cookies & love your blog! may i ask a question or two?
1. i can’t seem to get my flooded icing to cover the piped edge or to look so “puffy”. mine looks kinda flat. am i thinning it too much?
2. sometimes my flooded colored icing gets a white tint after a few days (on a decorated cookie). is this again because of too much thinning?
3. my piping icing gets very hard to squeeze out after a few hours even if i place the bag/tip in a cup with damp paper towels. any suggestions?
oops, that’s three questions. thanks so much & keep up the great work!
1. YES…too thin
2. No idea, haven’t had this happen….yet
3. Maybe too thick in the first place? Think toothpaste. Usually it does the opposite. Are you sealing the bags? Using Karen’s bag trick?
