Owl in Pumpkin Cookies
I’ve said it before. I have a thing for owls. They remind me of my mom and growing up. Warm happy thoughts. So, when I ran across this image on a greeting card in Target, and I could not wait to “cookie” it.
Despite my outrageous collection most of you already know that one of my favorite things to do is come up with ways to make new creative cookie designs from different cutters. I used the candy corn from this set, which I also found in Target {I love that place} to make these cookies.
Just to help you out, here’s a tip. When I cut out my cookies, I first cut out the shape then I used the tip of the candy corn to cut out a notch for the owl’s horns. No trimming needed. You have all the tools you need in one cutter.
To decorate these cookies you will need:
orange piping and flood icing
dark brown piping and flood icing
light brown piping and flood icing
ivory and gold flood icing {a tiny bit}
To begin, outline and fill the pumpkins in alternating sections. Let one section dry before moving onto anther to create dimension.
When the pumpkins are filled, they should look like this. Let them dry for about an hour, then move onto the owl.
To add the owl, first pipe on and fill the brow. It’s a “u” or wide “v” shape. Then outline the body area with light brown icing.
Quickly fill the owl with brown, and while the icing is still wet, quickly drop in a dot of ivory icing then gold. Finally, after the base has dried a bit, add a dark brown dot for the pupil.
Finally, add the finishing touches. I used a #1.5 tip to add a little fluff around my owl’s eyes, and then the orange, also with a #1.5 tip to add a beak. I love how they turned out.
I also made another version of this cookie! You can view step-by-step instructions on my pal Nikki’s blog, Pennies on a Platter. Be sure to go check it out. You’ll like what you see. Nikki is always cooking up something delicious, including pumpkin spice syrup. I have a feeling I will be making that one VERY soon!
Here’s the whole family. Aren’t they cute? I am super excited for Halloween. It is one of my favorite cookie seasons. I always have more ideas than time!
Thanks for dropping in!
I have a thing for owls, too. These are too cute! I tried your recipe and icing tutorials out this past weekend for my son’s birthday, and it was so fun. The first tries weren’t so pretty, but I got better by the 4th dozen. 🙂
These are too cute! They look incredible!! You did a fantastic job, perfect for fall 🙂
WOW I can not comment how incredibly creative you’re!
These owls and ghost in a pumpking are great :O)
I love that you don’t need to buy another cookie cutter for these! I’m with you–use what you already have. These are awesome! I’ve just learned how to do sugar cookies after all these years. I’ll have to try them. Neat site.
The owls are great, especially the eyes. But I have to say my favorite is the ghost, that was an awesome surprise halfway through the post. These are both are some of the most adorable cookies I’ve seen for Halloween yet. And so smart to use the candy corn cutter!
Stellar cuteness! I’m off to Target for the cutters. Any chance these would freeze after they’re iced?
(Thanks so much for all the inspiration on your blog – it literally makes my day when I see a new post!)
Such a FUN idea!! Love both the ghost and the owl!!! What size tip do you use when making the ivory part of the eye? It looks like a big circle….so do you use a 3? You are sooo creative!!!
Sweet!
These are super creative and I love them!!
Callye, Admiring your darling cookies is a fun way to start my day! 🙂
Awesome, you are so creative!!
So cute! I just might have to mix it up by making the owls in pumpkins and using the candy corn cutter to create a full ghost. Target must have Wilton manufacturing their cutters because the picture under the skull cutter is the same picture on a 3 cutter set I just purchased that is Wilton branded.
These look so cute. All these fall themed cookies need a pumpkin spice cookie recipe to go with them. Hmmm. I might experiment this weekend. =B
Now, I have to go and get a candy corn cutter. I’ve already got 3 different sets of cutter in the past week. I love your site and your ideas! I wish I was as creative as you are!
OMG Callye, those are so cute and even someone like me could do them! Love it!!!
VERY clever, and totally darling. I love the ghosts!
Great cookies! I have these cutters maybe I’ll give them a go 🙂
Thanks Callye!
Awww, this is too cute ! I’m craving for a pumpkin pie but I’m too tired to bake it ! Check out : http://nothinlasts.blogspot.com/
I love these. My oldest daughter will flip over these. She will be home for a visit next week and I bet we will have to make some! thanks Thanks thanks!!
Love them! What fun cookies 🙂
So glad I logged in! I have extra cookie dough and wanted to make something different. Thanks again for the idea!
Super cute cookies as always! We’re going to really miss you this week! Have a wonderful time! I can’t wait to hear all about it!
These are beyond cute. I love owls & pumpkins. I actually saw these cutters in target the other day and thought of you (:
You NEVER cease (sp?) to amaize me!! If I only had half of your creativity…I’d be happy! 😉
Love, love these! Hope you’re having fun so far!
These cookies are too cute! TFS
dear sugarbelle,
you are like a cookie rockstar
the end
mis-cakes
How do you think of this stuff, seriously?! I love owls too, and these are just too darn cute!!
These are HOOT-tastic!
I’m so jealous! I made my very first batch of royal icing on Tuesday, and it turned out great. But then last night I tried baking some cookies and decorating them, not so much. The cookies spread too much as they were baking, and my outlining was a little shaky. I need practice, I know, but your cookies always look amazing.
Love these!!!!
What adorable owls! How do you come up with this stuff?
Geez, I already made my owl pincushion based on your last owl post. I can’t keep up – you are just too creative! 🙂
You and your perfect ways of turning one cookie cutter into a multi-use cutter

You are awesome and very creative. I just love your ideas on using one cookie cutter and making it useful for so many different cookies. Just wonderful! Keep ’em coming. I hope to try some of these. God bless. <3
These look great ……as usual! Love how you always improvise with what you have, to make these great treats!
These are just adorable. When I was decorating our pot of gold cauldrons for next spring, Frank our baker thought they were upside down owls. I meant to make a snowy owl cookie for him, but just ran out of time. I’ll have to give this a try. ~ MaryJane @ King Arthur Flour
Brilliantly done…almost too pretty to eat…almost !!!

Love the owls but starting to get worried about you! Hope you are ok! Take care!
These cutters are Wilton brand…. Bottom left corner of the packaging has the Wilton logo. I got a set last year on sale after Halloween.
Those are amazing! You are quite the cookie artist!

I LIKE WHEN YOU GIVE DIFFERENT WAYS TO USE THE COOKIE CUTTERS…THANK YOU!
Way too cute to eat!
Oh, I wasn’t asking for a visual tutorial ; ) Perhaps just a couple sentences that would give the step-by steps : ) But in any case, thank you so much for just responding : ) Happy Thanksgiving week!!
I LOVE your tutorials!! =)
Love, love, love these! I can’t wait to give these a try this year!
