Hook ‘Em Horns {Texas Longhorns Cookies}
Today is the day. THE DAY. The one my husband looks forward to with more excitement and anticipation than Christmas. The first game of the UT football season. He’s been spewing stats for weeks. I might qualify as an expert myself. So, in honor of the day I lose TV control for most of the year, I decided to celebrate with what I do to keep myself busy while I’m TV-less.
These are about my all time favorite UT cookies. I’d love to take credit for the design, but I got the idea from a Flickr friend, Laura, who may very well be the most Lonrghorn makin-est cookier I know! She truly has the BEST ideas!
To make these you don’t need a special cutter. Use and I love you handsign cutter and lop off the thumb.
Bake and cool and you are ready to decorate. You will need:
- Outline and piping icing in burnt orange
- white piping icing
*Sidenote Bernie and I have gone round and round about the proper burnt orange color. Apparently, he BLEEDS this color {perhaps next time we have this convo, I’ll have him prove it} It’s come to the point of him comparing my final color to licensed Longhorn apparel. I say, if I am ever making cookies for Mack Brown, I might get really particular. Until then, he will have to be satisfied with my mixture or tulip red, egg yolk yellow, and warm brown. It’s fine…trust me.
To decorate, first outline and fill the cookie in burnt orange.
Let that dry, and then pipe on the details. It may seem confusing, but if you take it in sections, it’s easy! Start with the thumb, add the two middle fingers,
outline the rest, and you’re done! Not too bad, right?
Just in time for game day!
Speaking of game day, I do have one sad cookie on my hands. The Longhorn Sport’s Network that he was SOOOOOOOOO excited about is not available in our area {which surprises me zero considering that we are in Red Raider country} Anyway, this means for the first time in years, my Longhorn lovin’ guy is going to miss the first game. I have a feeling that I will find him later this evening listening via satellite radio in our car, if he isn’t already speeding toward Austin. Maybe I better go check on him, he’s been outside for an awful long time…
But seriously, these cookies are a crowd pleaser. I’ve made more UT cookies than I can remember {note the different shades of burnt orange}, and almost all of them include this cookie!
Even baby showers
and Christmas cookies aren’t exempt!!!
If you are watching the game today, keep my poor dissapointed husband in your thoughts.
For all the fans of those other Texas teams, I will to make it up to you soon =)
Have a happy football watchin’, cookie decorating Saturday!
Hey Callye! Love this idea! My husband bleeds blue for those Cowboys you have in your state! LOL I have one more week before the weekend chores go out the window!
LOL, he’s a cowboys fan too!
Hi, Callye! I just discovered your blog today. Loved looking through your posts. All your cookies are simply delightful and look so delicious! OH my…my husband would absolutely love these Hook ‘Em Longhorn cookies, and all the other UT cookies you’ve made! He is a UT graduate and a big UT-Sports fan…that is one BIG reason why we live here in Austin. He will be at the game tonight…and, of course, he’s super-excited. Has your husband tried the online Longhorn website? We’ve had so many 100+ degree days (I think we are at 76 days), hope they don’t melt at the game tonight.
I’m not a cookie baker (I’m a paper crafter), but I just loved what I saw on your blog. Thanks for sharing so many wonderful ideas.
-Martha
Glad to have you! I am often inspired by paper crafters! Glad to return the favor! Nice to meet you, Martha!
Great looking cookies.. We have the Longhorn Network here in Waco, excited about the first fame. He might be able to watch the game on the Longhorn Network website.
You and your cookies are so amazing, Callye! Thanks for the font of information about the home baker’s bill. I appreciate it very much. I look forward to more info. about getting it started in CA.
P.S. My daughter(and fam) lives in Texas Tech territory:)
baylor cookies please!
I gotcha covered! http://www.flickr.com/photos/sweetsugarbelle/4647085854/
Adorable! I love these.
I sympathize with your husband. I can’t get the Longhorn Network here either, I’m in Aggieland. I’m watching Oregon and LSU, and hoping since it’s halftime I might get a glimpse of what ol’ GG is up to, and if he’s still squinting.
There is a baking-supply store on Research Blvd. in Austin – they sell out of warm brown every football season.
Well I know what cookie cutter I am going to have to buy! My son will absolutely LOVE these!!
Yay! I’m a Longhorn!
Longhorn in Dallas surrounded by boyfriend & friends need to ooze maroon & cheer for A&M. I’m making these for my own enjoyment. Thank you!!!!
I just got home from the UT game and checked my e-mail. Imagine my surprise when I saw your blog and your Longhorn cookies. They are all so cute!
We feel your husband’s pain about the LHN. It is frustrating that it doesn’t seem to be available anywhere. Even the Rice University band poked fun at it in their halftime performance. It was funny.
Thanks for sharing your talent!
Hey Callye,
As usual, beautiful cookies and amazing decoration!
Just wonder how long did it take you to fully dry the orange color before you could add outline details?
I’d say about an hour or two. Depends on your climate. If you have bleeding issues, let them dry eight hours =)
It took me FOREVER to get to work tonight. Crazy longhorn fans who don’t know how to drive!
I use to work at a baker in west campus and we made longhorn cookies and iced them burnt orange, until we got in trouble! You have to get permission to sell anything that color, so we just made them different colored longhorns.
That’s INSANE! I would figure you wouldn’t sell Longhorn items, but the color?! How do they prove that?! Agreed on the traffic. Hubby is going to a game soon. I will be finding something else to do =)
Love it ! This is really cool ! You’re so good, I would never be able to do this ! Check out : http://nothinlasts.blogspot.com/
We are in Dallas this weekend for a wedding. It’s a longhorn wedding to say the least. The bride, groom, and most of the wedding party all graduated from UT. Can you imagine their surprise when they could not find a bar in this giant metropolis that had the the longhorn network and could not watch the game. Probably for the best when we heard the final score though.
I am wondering if they are going to fix that soon. It made for a LOT of angry fans!
My son transferred to your rival this year and one of his teachers talked about an Oct. 7th school holiday and he was confused. When he raised his hand to inquire about this unknown holiday they said the Red River Shootout means no school on Friday at OU. I did buy a longhorn (you know he’ll be upside down!) and a little Sooner Cowboy….I love college football!!!! (the cookies are great !)
Oh my gosh these are adorable!
I especially love the Christmas Longhorn cookies! They are so sweet!! College football isn’t such a bog deal up here! I miss Texas for that..Sic’Em Bears 😉
Wonderful news, friend!
I just discovered your blog and you are one talented lady! I can just imagine that you are going to do great things with this talent among your current accomplishments. I am sure that your hubby was grateful for these divine little cookies. Great job!!! 🙂
All of these are great, love the football helmets and the adorable Longhorn Christmas assortment! Hope Bernie doesn’t have to prove that he does bleed Longhorn burnt orange 🙂
I’m not a fan of Red Lobster but really like Longhorn and Olive Garden. We don’t go out to eat very often molsty because I like to cook at home. Another is the expense now that my boys are getting older and eating more! Luckily my wife and I usually split a meal, I eat a lot of small meals throughout the day so our dinner isn’t usually comprised of much. Thsnks for the heads up on the offer, we’re always looking for deals and ways to save!
As UT grads with a daughter alum who still lives in Austin, our family, of course, loves all things UT, as evidenced by our 1948 burnt orange Chevy pick-up with a longhorn stiched into the back of the white leather seat! IZ OF TX plates!
Your Longhorn cookies are FANTASTIC, and I’m so glad my Dallas turned Denver friend forwarded your great blog to me! Small problem..If I tried to perfect these by our upcoming TX-OU party, I would be a mess and no two would look alike! Can you help??!!
These look wonderful for any UT Gameday! Did you use a Christmas cookie recipe?

Uh-oh, does that mean no Aggie cookies on this site??? : ) I guess one could lop off the other two fingers and leave the thumb? I just rediscovered your site and havent delved into it yet, but would love to hear how you would handle an Aggie cookie, if you havent already posted it.
I’d love these in Aggie Christmas cookies too!! Do you sell them??

Hi Sugarbelle,
I’m making these cookies this weekend for our TX OU party in Colorado. I was wondering if you trace the Longhorn and UT logos onto the white cookies (shown in first photo) or if you use the pushpin tip or just freehand. This is my first go at cookie making and your site is AMAZING! Thanks for all the help you provide!
We just came back from visiting the UT about two weeks ago. My husband is an alum and he wanted to show me around. Beautiful! I made some Longhorn cookies when I got back with the cutter I bought at the Co-op.
Hook ’em!!! We live in Austin and these are awesome.
Love these!

Where can I get the colors that are used? I hate trying to mix colors and they still don’t get dark enough…
I would love to know how you achieved that lovely burnt orange color for the icing. That’s a hard color to achieve.
As an Oklahoma Sooner fan, I must say that those are upside down 😛
Since it is quite obvious you are a longhorn fan, I almost hate to ask.. but would you be willing to make some A&M cookies? Would be much appreciated! Absolutely love your cookies!
Did they ever get back to you on the Aggie Christmas cookies?? I’d love to buy some!!
Are you accepting cookie orders? Iam looking to order two dozen Texas Longhorn cookies
for my sons graduation on May 21, 2016. Pease notify me if there is a possibility you are. If not, can you recommend a bakery . I live in Chicago and not familiar with any bakeries in Austin. Thank you kindly.
Hi there. Can I order 2 dozen of your UT Longhorn cookies? A mix is fine -no Football helmets this is for a high school graduation party. wrapped individually ?
Let me know how much that would be. Thank you! I am up in the DFW area–Southlake.
HI! Sorry for the delayed reply, I don’t take orders, but I know some people in your area that do. If you would like their information, I will email a few options to you. Just reply yes to this comment, and I will send them your way!
