Decorated Peeps Cookies
If you’re feeling like you’ve seen Peeps cookies here before, you’re absolutely right. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…I made Peeps cookies.
Except back then, there was no such thing as a Peeps cookie cutter set. I had to get creative. Now, thanks to the geniuses at Wilton, Peeps cookies are as easier than ever before.
If you’re in the market for Peeps cutters, I’ve seen them at Walmart and Michaels so far. I’ll update the links list as I find more.
Once upon a time, for the sake of perfectly matched colors I would have driven to the store and bought Peeps. But now that we’re finally entering the the era of convenient cookies, I threw caution to the wind and GUESSED. These are my favorite color combinations for Peeps cookies:
- Pink-Wilton rose
- Yellow-Lemon yellow {I actually used a mix of lemon and egg yellow, but stick with straight lemon}
- Blue-Sky blue with a touch of turquoise
- Purple-Electric purple mixed with regal purple
To make these cookies you will need:
- 20-second icing in the colors of your choice
- Sanding sugar in the colors of your choice {I usually buy sanding sugar here}
- Dark brown 20-second icing
*If using colored sugar, simplify this project by using white icing underneath. Clear sanding sugar is great for a colored icing base
Begin by flooding the cookie with 20-second icing. If necessary, use an offset spatula to even out the icing. My favorite thing about these cookies is that since they’re covered with sanding sugar, you don’t have to worry about air bubbles.
Let the icing set slightly {five to ten minutes} then sprinkle with sanding sugar. If you apply it too soon, the sugar will sink into the wet icing. Waiting just a few minutes will produce a much nicer finish.
This really has nothing to do with the actual cookie, but I thought I’d throw it in. When using sanding sugar, I like to work on a clean piece of parchment paper {coffee filters work too}. When I’m finished working, cleanup is as simple as pouring the excess back in the jar.
Anywho, once the base is dry remove any excess sugar and use a #2 tip to add a face.
The hardest thing about these Peeps is deciding between a cookie and the real thing!

THESE ARE SO AWESOME!!!!!! They seem to get cuter every Easter 🙂 I haven’t had a real peep in like 10 years, but I may have to go eat one!
Confession: I like OLD Peeps. If they haven’t been out for a day or two, I can’t eat them!
Ha! Maybe that’s my problem, I always try to eat candy the second I buy it 😀 hahaha
So cute. Love the simplicity of these and just got the cutters from Michaels. Thanks Callye.
i have a friend who LOVES Peeps, and since I’m no baker and you mentioned these are a good starter cookie, I think I’ll have to try hunting down the cookie cutter and making them for him.
The thing is, I would have to ship them to him. Would there be a packing method you could recommend to get these through the mail?
Here ya go! https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/2011/12/shipping-cookies/
Awesome, thanks so much. Great tips in there! 😀
You can skip the box in a box part, and just make sure they are floating in the middle…but I went the most cautious route =)
Bought mine today !! So excited, Easter can’t get here fast enough.
Hi. Great job. Did you use the colored sugar on your cookies above? Or did you use the clear on all of them? Thanks. 🙂
I used colored sugar on the pink and yellow, and clear on the purple and blue.
Stop it! I saw the pic of the cutters on IG…but you already made them!? Amazing! Definitely going to get the cutters tomorrow. Fun fact…I made a giant Peep chick cake a few years ago. Fun fact #2…I also love day (or two) old Peeps. That’s the best way to eat them!
Perfect – I need a quick and simple to offer friends this year! And not worrying about air bubbles… GOLD MEDAL for you!!
How fun…love them!!
Perfect eye placement! ????
Don’t know how all the ??? came about!
Hi there! I just recently found your blog and love, love, love it! Your cookies are SO AMAZING! I had no idea cookies could be so beautiful! They are truly little works of art. I have never tried making fancy sugar cookies, but you have inspired me to give it a whirl. Pretty sure mine will be sad in comparison, but you gotta start somewhere, right? Thank you for the inspiration and fantastic blog!
I purchased the peeps cookie cutters yesterday and was elated to have found them. Then I saw your post today and I cannot wait to use mine. The cookies are so cute.
Sooo lovely!
I’m so happy I just pick up those peeps cutters and can’t wait to make and bake my peeps instead of blowing them up in the microwave! LOL
BWHAHAHAHAHAHA! This is why we’re friends. We get a kick out of nuking Peeps 😉
I just bought the peeps cutters a few days ago, can’t wait to use them! Yours are so adorable!! 🙂
I love your work! Really hate to bother you but it’s about the pandas. You have a cookie with a bamboo stencil background and royal icing pandas. Where did you find those little buggers? I would love to use them on chocolate suckers. Thank you so much for sharing your work.
Here’s the link the the shop I like: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCookieCountess
Thank you for your reply. I don’t need the bamboo, just the pandas. Sorry to be a pain. Thanks again.
What color sanding sugars did you use? I’m ordering them online from Country Kitchen … and this is my first time using them … so don’t want to be disappointed in the results. Thanks!!
I used clear and a bright pink…the pink is from Americolor. The yellow is a lighter shade from CK.
hi i like so much your cookies! but i have a question where do you buy the bottles that use for filling the cookie i cant find it i find but can not put the tip on it i hope you read my question! im from texas!
Was just going to ask how you did the frosting on the mini peeps and then realized those are real peeps!! Lol!! Love these cookies! I made these a few years back (via you) with the piping and the flooding but the 20 sec icing will make them so much easier!!
I have just purchased the peeps cutters and am now ordering my icing colors and sanding sugar. When you say you used “clear” sanding sugar, where can I find that? I am online at Country Kitchen and don’t seem to see a “clear”. I take it from reading the posts that you used yellow and pink sanding sugar and then for the purple and blue cookies you used the clear?
Thanks so much! I can’t wait to make these for Easter this year!

I’m making cookie baskets. I’m using floral styrofoam for the inside of the basket. The basket looks fabulous, but when I move it, some of the cookies spin and end up backwards. Is there any way to secure the stick so it doesn’t move?
Thanks!!!
p.s. I LOVE your website!!!
Nice post..nice share…

These have caught my eye on Pinterest for months! I made them today and they are SO cute! I do have one question though…I had the hardest time with the eyes and nose! I am by no means an expert like you, but I can usually work pretty well with a piping bag. Whenever I put my dots on, they just stuck to my tip (now covered in the sanding sugar). I tried pushing the dots off the tip with a toothpick. That didn’t work either. Could I make something that looks so easy more difficult?!
Made these not long ago and they are so simple! Ended up making a huge batch of small and large ones, using some as cake decorations, hehe. Thanks for the tutorial! Posted the images on my web blog and linked everyone back here.
