Superman Cookies
Are you looking for a cookie idea for the super dad in your life? Then these are perfect for you! Technically I made these a couple of weeks ago for my super graduate, but I thought they’d work for Father’s Day too.
Since I unofficially crowned June no Kopykake month I’m going to show you how to make these perfect Superman cookies without a projector.
Begin by printing out two Superman logos in the size you’d like your cookie to be. I printed colored images so they’d photograph better but to conserve printer ink go with black and white.
Cut out a logo and use as a template for hand-cutting the dough.
Or, if you’re extra lazy {like me} you can also trim a square cookie. They won’t be exact but if you center the design properly, they’re close enough.
While the cookies are cooling, use an Exacto knife to cut the second image into a stencil.
Place the stencil over the cookie and use a fine-tipped FooDoodler food color marker to trace the image onto the cookie. Don’t worry if the cookies spread a bit during baking. Like I mentioned before, center the design and it won’t matter at all.
Once the image is transferred to the cookie use yellow twenty-second icing to fill the appropriate space.
Next, pipe a border around the outside edge of the cookie then quickly fill with red flood icing {if you’re sensitive to that icky red taste, use tulip red}. If you’re more comfortable outlining and then filling your cookie creations transfer the design first, outline with black or red icing, then carefully flood. Remember there’s more than one way to skin a rabbit.
At this point let the cookie dry. You can stop here if you like…
Or, create a little more impact by outlining with a #1.5 PME tip.
If you do happen to have a Kopykake, follow the cutting steps above and then finish up with a projector. You can read about my favorite way to use a Kopykake HERE.
If you’re looking to create customized Superman shields check out these cool printable templates from The Lady Wolf. I also love these superhero cookies from Sweet-T-Cookies. It’s really a genius design. One of these days I hope to translate them into a Superman theme.
No matter how you approach it, Superman cookies are a surefire way to put a smile on that super man’s face.
Have a great week my super baker friends!
The comic book nerd in me would like to thank you for these!! SuperMan is one of my fave and these look super cool. Love them 🙂
Super cool cookie…I have one question, not sure if anyone can shed any light on this….
Whenever I use a food writer marker it never shows up on my cookie (no matter what sugar cookie recipe I try). I’ve bought brand new boxes and have not had success with writing on cookies. The first few cookies are fine, but after that the marker doesn’t work any longer. It seems as though the butter from the cookie may be causing a problem? I don’t know. I don’t own a copykake, so I try to use a marker for stencils, but end up getting so frustrated. Any tips??
Thanks!
I’m no cookie expert but it could be the brand of marker you are using. Are you using “W-brand”? Try using Americolor. I’ve noticed a big difference in the coverage. Also, keep your markers in the fridge to keep them fresh and avoid them getting dried out. I keep mine in a cup, upside down (caps down), in the fridge. Also, you may need to use a darker color. Using a black marker on chocolate cookies worked for me!
Michaela, it might depend on which brand of markers you are using. The W-brand doesn’t seem to have the coverage that Americolor has. They seem to write darker and more like paint than marker. I hope that makes sense. Also, keep your markers in the fridge. I keep mine in a cup, tips down, because I heard that will keep them from drying out so quickly. Another thing you could try is using a darker colored marker. I usually see Callye using a yellow marker but I use green since I feel like it will be the least used marker in my bunch. Hers look like Wilton. I’m not an expert like Callye but I hope these suggestions help.
Oops! I didn’t see my first reply so I replied again. Odd, where was it hiding? 🙂
Hi, Miichaela!
The problem you mentioned is a common one. For these particular cookies I used Foodoodlers, and they worked fine, but I have to periodically wipe the tips with a paper towel. You could also use a pencil (I’ve heard tales of this) or use a sharp needle tool to scrape in the design.
You are a godsend! Just got an inquiry about superhero wedding cookies and this was the most dreaded superhero for me. I just wish my pme would stop clogging, I think the meringue I use has too large crystals in it that don’t dissolve. grrr! Awesome cookies!
Brantcookies, try this trick from Bearfoot Baker for clogged tips… http://thebearfootbaker.com/2012/02/tip-for-no-clog-0-and-00-pme-tips/
Are you dissolving your meringue powder in warm water by beating it to a frothy stage first? It might not be the meringue but dried bits of icing. That happened to me and really got under my skin. I was using leftover icing and there were some dried bits of icing that must have fallen into the “good icing”.
Hey there :-). The simplest fix I’ve found is to cut a one inch square of pantyhose and screw it into the coupler. It saves bagging/sieving the icing. You can easily change it out if the flow slows down. Hope that helps 🙂
I love these!! Thank you so much for the great idea.
Very nice. I enjoy seeing your process.
First of all, let me fangirl all over you and tell you how much I enjoy your posts and you’ve inspired me so much to expand my cookie skill-z!!! Is there *anyway* you could include a picture again for your e-mail subscribers? It used to be we got the whole post (via e-mail) and I understand why you went to the summary form but it would be very handy when we save the e-mail if it had a picture reference to help sort out what post goes with what cookie — I pretty much save *all* your e-mails 🙂
Let me see what I can do. I can’t always fix that sort of thing, but I know just the gal who can!
These are stupendous! 🙂 Sometimes I even prefer cutting out paper and outlining with an edible marker, Easier to see than the Kopykake projector!
Me too! Beats dragging out “the Beast” 🙂
You are awesome!!!! I have to make Superman, Spiderman, and Batman cookies next month. Thanks for the tips! I’m going to give the Americolor markers a try, too.
You are AMAZING!!!!!!! YOU ARE SO CREATIVE! OMG you never fail to amaze me. And your genorousity (sp?)knows no bounds.
I totally agree, Callye, these would be perfect for Fathers Day! In fact, the would look awesome paired with my Super Hero Cake Pops! 🙂
Just a quick note to say that I used the M printable from The Lady Wolf (that you linked to above) to create a personalized Superman cookie awhile back. It came out great… and added a nice personal touch!
Very helpful technique and a great looking cookie.
Great design! I LOVE the fact that you’ve declared June, no kopykake month! Perfect for me since I don’t have one and don’t expect to have one anytime in the near future!
LOVE these!
You really are Super! <3
Amazing!! I’m a huge Superman fan and these are great! Just in time for the new Man of Steel movie coming out as well. 😀
Super cute!! Loved that you used a square cutter.
Really chuffed that you’ve kopykake-less for June. It’s great to see your decorating skills shining through without the help of just tracing – makes it more aspirational and makes me feel like I can get it right too with practice.
OMG! I will never hand cut these cookies again! You are so clever!!! Love your creativity!!!!
While I love having a Kopykake the paper templates just seem to go so much faster. Great tutorial as always!
Absolute perfection and great idea on the cutter!
Super cute and creative!
SUPER-cute! Thank you for the tutorial.
AHHH!! Where was this tutorial back in February? Haha. My son’s name is Clark and for his 1st bday we had a Superhero themed party. I searched ALL over your site for a Superman cookie. I skipped the “S” and did a #1 instead. You can see what I ended up with here. http://pinterest.com/pin/78250112247825516/
That’s for the tutorial! Maybe we’ll use it for his 2nd bday! 🙂

These look amazing. Thanks for the tutorial!
I was just about to buy a Superman cutter, and then I found this. As usual, you saved me! My heart sings! Thank you!
I like to use card stock for a slightly sturdier template. I’ve also purchased plastic to make your own stencil.
