The Easiest Cookies You Will Ever Make
Short on time? Feeling pressure to show up to the kiddos school party with something homemade? Believe it or not, I rarely send decorated cookies to school. More often than not, my kiddos get these. Can you believe they’re straight out of a box?
That’s right! Call me lazy, but I’ve watched hours of work devoured in minutes enough to learn, when it comes to kids, this is the way to go.
All you need are a devil’s food cake mix, butter, a few eggs, and a little flour for homemade cookies in a snap.
I bake them on a Silpat and use a cookie scoop to make them pretty and uniform.
A few minutes in the oven and VIOLA! Perfect, chewy, chocolately, goodness.
You can dress them up even more by rolling them in pretty sprinkles {before baking}, because sprinkles make EVERYTHING better, right?
These particular sprinkles can be purchased from the friendly folks over at Shop Baker’s Nook by clicking HERE.
Send these to school, work, or whatever. If you do, everyone will love you. They’ll ask for the recipe too. No one will believe they came from a mix.
If you’re feeling frisky, try adding a teaspoon of cinnamon and half a teaspoon of chili powder for a quick version of Martha Stewart’s Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies. You can also use other flavors. We especially like cherry chip.
You probably won’t need it, but here’s the recipe just in case…
Ingredients
- 1 boxed cake mix {I used Duncan Hines devil’s food}
- 1/2 cup {1 stick} unsalted butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 to 2 tbsp. flour
- 1-2 tsp. vanilla or other flavoring {optional}
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a bowl and mix well. Use a cookie scoop drop evenly sized potions of dough onto ungreased cookie sheets {or Silpat if possible} and bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. Let cool on the sheet for at least ten minutes.
- Makes 2.5 dozen
Never slink into another party with a plastic box of cookies under your coat. These are just as easy, and it’s a good feeling telling everyone you made them. Trust me on this one.
Oh yes, and if you like a little peanut butter to go with your chocolate, try Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies from my friend Shelly over at Cookies and Cups.
I’ve been shopping, so I will see y’all soon with some new fun finds.
Have a great weekend, eveyone!
These look super delicious! And the sprinkles are the perfect touch to dress them up! Super cute!
OH THAT IS JUST TOO CUTE!!!
I’m going to have to try these gluten free.
So cute!!
Love the tiny hearts! Have a great day
Awesome cookies! 🙂
Oh these are so cute! Love the heart sprinkles!
Love these! They look great 🙂 thanks for sharing your tip
So, yeah…I just made cake mix cookies to post next Tuesday! How does this always happen?! I guess smart girls think alike 😉
It looks delicious ! Can you tell me what kind of cookie scoop you are using or the size ? Thanks.
well these look perfect, I have a play date tonight with my son and his friend and had no idea what fast and easy thing to try, this may be it!
Cool! I think I’ll try these today!
These are easy! And adorable! 🙂
They look yummy! I am going to make some for everyone at work on Monday! Thanks:)
Feeling the need for some instant gratification after reading this. Wonder if I’ve got a mix in my pantry…. Um, catchyalaterbye!
I bet that’d be cute and tastey with the cherry cake mix rolled in the little hearts.
This is an awesome recipe to have on hand. Thanks so much for sharing your genius ideas :0) p.s. love the little heart sprinkles…….such a cute touch!
I love cookies like these!!!! They are so simple to make AND taste good, I never thought to add flour, I will have to try that next time! The heart sprinkles make them pop!!!
I’m getting excited thinking of all the possibilities!! Strawberry…spice cake….french vanilla…. Love it!!
Thanks for sharing, these are so cute with the mini sprinkles!!
They ARE so pretty and uniform! I have some of those same sprinkles, and they sure pop in those chocolate cookies! You sure have a way with cookies, Callye!
Wow, I have a box of this cake mix in my cupboard in need of being used and this idea is perfect!! I love it thanks for the inspiration!
I’ve make Cake Box Cookies in the past and absolutely love them. Can you tell me if these are chewy or crunchy?
The sprinkles look so cute on these Callye. I make cake mix cookies similiar to these but smaller, then sandwich two together with cream cheese frosting to make little whoopie pies.
You’re so right. I about dove into the trashcan after an untouched haunted house cookie that I’m sure took more time than it was worth to a bunch of 3rd graders.
I fell over reading that! I totally understand!!
I love making chocolate mint cookies with a box of cake mix.
Sprinkles are my best friend.
Cute cookies!!
These are awesome! Thanks for sharing the recipe. I’m pinning it now. 🙂
Absolutely clever and wonderfully decorated. Happy Weekend
ooooh looks so easy! going to try this! I have those sprinkles that I got at my local Michaels! Thx for sharing!
OK, I LOVE YOU…this is a working mom’s dream… I have a problem.. I must kick butt in the baking good department. OK, OK I’m going to therapy but a cookie swap a few years back where I (GASP) brought bakery (YES I bought them) cookies scarred me for life. The PTO had a stroke..an email went out ..it was U-G-L-Y! The thing is I CAN bake, and decorate like any OCD version of Martha Stewart on the block BUT when I am traveling I can’t always make that happen. So enters the fab recipe above. It’s my perfect “home” made victory! They are delicious and easy. THANk YOU, THANK YOU!
Where do you get your cherry chips?? I haven’t seen them for years!
Now this is the bees-nastic…..that’s bees knees and fantastic in one word because I love the simple but elegant look. Just this am my husband saw me working on a bunch of cute polar bear fondant toppers for some cupcakes I’m doing for the kids at school (they r finishing their bear unit) He said why are you wasting your time — kids don’t care how they look they just want to eat them up fast!! So true so true…..
Awesome photography!!!
My favorite easy cookie is a box of lemon cake mix, one cup of rice krispies, 1 egg, and 1 melted stick of butter. So quick and so yummy!
Oh MY, photos PLEASE!
Explain please because sounds delicious! 🙂
I’m definitely going to make some of these. They look delish!! 🙂
I am making these this weekend……….for sure. I have a TON of sprinkles ………..and I never use them because there just isn’t a good place for them on decorated cookies. But now………THIS I can do!!! And you know all those tiny packets of sprinkles you get with cookie cutter orders and from Karen’s? I’m getting them all out and using them at last. This was the perfect post…just what I needed.
I asked my son’s teacher if I could bring in cookies for dr seuss day ………. she said they didn’t accept any baked goods from home………..when did this happen???
Just made these tonight, and I rolled them in sugar instead of sprinkles. Love the shiny look it gives them =)
Memories! I remember you showing me how to make these! Thanks for the recipe!
Lol…where was speakerphone back then? For the scoop, keep a little cup of powder sugar or flour nearby. Dip it every few scoops that should help…
How long is there self life? I just wanted to make them ahead of time. My daughters bday is this weekend and things can get a little hectic towards the end. Thanks a bunch!
Also, my cookie dough likes to stick to the scoop. Any suggestions?
I spray my scoop with a little cooking spray to help this 🙂
Sometimes I spend so much time decorating cakes that I just want to have a plain cake and frosting.
I would think you probably are like that about cookies, too. The possibilities with this recipe are endless.
Oh, wow, these are spectacular!! I love these, and they look like they’d be delicious too!
Reminds me of the time I wanted to bring decorated sugar cookies to a party but didn’t want to make the dough myself. I bought store-brand sugar cookie dough in a tube, rolled them out, used cute cutters, then decorated them with glaze. Everyone was raving about them, begging for the recipe.
For a while, I told them it was an old family recipe, and I didn’t know if I should share or not. Then I couldn’t keep a straight face anymore, so I told them what it was, and no one believed me! It’s fun doing that… 😀
Wow; these look great and sound easy! Thanks for posting the recipe and photos. I’m definitely going to try these.
looks delicious, can we put son confectionery sugar on top? are chewey like th ones thar are like crackle up with sugar? really love it.
the sprinkles are before we bake the cookies rigth?
Yes, and yes. This is a very forgiving recipe!!!
Ooh how nice to have an easy option after how hard we work on the decorate cookies! Great idea! Thanks for sharing!
I like these cookies, thanks for recipes.looks like delicious
can u freeze these?
Can you make these with yellow cake mix?
I made these from a Taste of Home magazine and they had a cream cheese filling…kinda like a dressed up whoopie pie…REALLY GOOD…thanks for reminding me!
Thanks so much for this recipe! They look divine! I found your blog though craft gossip, and your stuff is amazing. I used your royal icing recipe and tips to decorate my first batch of cookies! If you’re interested in checking them out, you can go here: http://littlebitomeghan.blogspot.com/2012/01/cookies.html
Made these last night and they are wonderful! And very easy too. Looking forward to experimenting with different flavors. Thank you!!
WOW that looks like the perfect texture in a cookie for me!! Love the rolling-them-in-sprinkles idea too! No one would guess these come from a box 🙂
I have a batch in the oven right now that I’m going ot take to a friends for dinner tonight. Thanks for being your usual inspirational self.
Those look SO good!!! I want one NOW! 🙂
Oh CUTE as they can be!! What kind of camera and lens do you use?? Your photos are always so crisp and clear with that smooth bokeh.
Wow! I just came across your blog. What a talent! Thank you for sharing your ideas and your kitchen secrets. Do you ship your cookies? Thanks again!
they sound really easy and look amazing! beautiful work
I have been dreaming – literally dreaming – of these cookies since you posted this recipe! I finally picked up the requisite cake mix today (along with the sprinkles) and made them right away. They were received by my little family with rave reviews! Thanks for the fun, easy recipe! I’ll use it again and again….
These look yummy! I think I will be trying these today. I have a box mix just waiting to be used! Perfect! The touch of sprinkles adds such a nice touch. Simple and great! Thanks for sharing!
I think these are brilliant. I was looking at these sprinkles just this morning and wondering what to do with them. Now I know! Thank you so much for sharing them with us. I can’t wait to make them.
This is a great recipe. I would have though that the sprinkles would melt in the oven sort of the way a chocolate chips does. But they dont. Thanks for the great tip!
Callye — You are actually a total lifesaver. 5 minutes before reading this, I was telling Stan that I wished I had had more notice for a birthday party so I could have made cookies….and then I read your post!! I grabbed some birthday sprinkles and was done in 20 minutes. LOVE YOU!!!
I wish I had a little can phone so I could holler at you and say G, I NEED YOU NOW {isn’t that a song} Emailed ya 😉
cake mix cookies are my go to cookies for my kids, so glad I’m not the only one!
Your cookies looks so pretty 🙂
I have to try adding the extra flour! I made cake bix cookies last week and posted the results. They cameout pretty good. I added sticks and made them heart cookie pops. Althought next time I will not add chocolate chips because the stick arent held in place with all the gooeyness:)
I wonder if adding the extra flour would help with this issue and Inwont have to eliminate the chocolate chips.
Revised and corrected…sorry guys for the prior errors.
I have to try adding the extra flour! I made cake box cookies last week and posted the results here http://www.cynthiaperalta.com/post/15732463012 .
They came out really good and so easy!
I added sticks and made them heart shaped cookie pops. Although next time I wont add the chips because some of the sticks didn’t stay in place with all the extra gooeyness:)
I wonder if adding the extra flour would help with this issue and I wont have to eliminate the chocolate chips? 🙂
Those little heart sprinkles make the world a much brighter place. Love the simple & perfect cookies 🙂
LOVE IT!! My little girl turns three this weekend and I think these will be a perfect addition to her dessert table. Yum!!
H I just made these I have been drooling about the picutres for days but mine came out qui runny the texture and there is no way I could have rolled sprinkles into them how much extra flour can you add into it??
I made these cookies this weekend, using pastel sprinkles and sent them to work with my boyfriend. When I went to the store later his coworkers would not believe that I made the cookies! It was so funny. They kept naming stores and saying come on, tell us where you got them. They said the sprinkles sticking so well (and being all over the cookie instead of just on top) and the size being perfect was just too perfect to be homemade. Made my day 🙂

Love the pretty little heart sprinkles!
I need to try these!!! I’ve labored over decorated cookies for my daughter’s preschool class and I think the teachers (and maybe other parents) are the only ones who truly appreciate them! These are a perfect substitute! Thanks!

Do you think it would be possible to substitute a different cake flavor? Like Carrot Cake maybe? Thanks!
What is the exact size of make mix you are using in your recipe? Recently, many manufactures are “updating” their packaging and as a result, the volume of cake mix, in this case, is less than what was expected (9oz vs. 12 oz) from a box just two or three years ago, while charging the same price.
I use Betty Crocker German Chocolate Cake mixes for a similar cookie, but the sprinkles add a really cool zip!
First of all, you have made super cute cookies. I adore your work and talent!!
Secondly I have bad news for you. Someone has stolen your exact idea without crediting you. I just stumbled over it by coincidence. Here is the link, I hope that you will be able to get this fixed!

Callye’s look way prettier tho!
I love this type of cookie in a pinch. I bought a book years ago with nothing but cake mix cookies in it. There’s a great lemon one in it.
Quick question: Do you recall what size cookie scoop you used? I have 3 or 4 different sizes. Thanks!
By the way, the Bridgebakes blog does credit SugarBelle in her first sentence with a live link: “These are by far the easiest cookies I have ever made. I found them via pinterest via Sweet Sugar Belle.” It is nice to see that credit is given.

Wow, found these via pinterest & made them tonight…LOVE!!!! Made up 4 dozen to take to work for Valentine’s Day (ok…there WERE 4 dozen, minus a few I had to test for myself…just to make sure they’re really good! lol). So easy and so tasty…light & crispy around the edges and softer in the center – my idea of a perfect cookie! Thanks for sharing this great, easy recipe! 🙂

Thanks for sharing this recipe. My 7 yr old son chose these cookies for his school Valentines. He mixed them himself and did a pretty good job adding the sprinkles. We will definitely put this recipe in the “go to” stack.
Thank you so much for this recipe. I made it using Red Velvet cake mix (red Velvet is my daughters favorite cake) for my daughter’s class treat for her birthday. She helped mix and roll in the sprinkles, so it was a great family project. We used some polka dot sprinkles. My husband doesn’t like store bought cookies and cakes and he liked these. I was shocked. 🙂
I just made these with Lemon supreme cake mix! They tasted AMAZING. Easiest cookies ever 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
I make a very similar recipe. Except, when they come out of the oven, I place one section of a Hershey bar on each cookie. Allow to melt a little, spread it out, and then sprinkle 🙂 Yum.
Cant wait to try!!!
Do you have a recipe for Monster Cookies that have peanut butter, oatmeal, cranberries and nuts? I’ve tried several of the recipes online and they are not what I’m looking for = can u help?
Tried them and me and the kids loved them
That pic looks like more that 2tbsp’s of flour and less than 1 stick of butter. … I am going to make them now!
Hi! I really loved this recipe, in fact I made up some cookies last night but I had to deal with some trouble… I mean the flavor was just great, but somehow my cookies were too thin and really really big, they spread out so much!! I used an ice cream scoop to put them on the oven… Honestly I don’t have any idea of what could happen, but instead of mine, your cookies look so gorgeous and perfect! I hope u can help me (Or if someone else could make it) to find out what happen or give me some tip. I adore ur blog, thanks for all sweet recipes, ur really the best ever! 🙂
Did you use margarine rather than butter? Maybe the cookies were too big?
Hello, thanks for the quickly answer!! In fact, i used good quality butter. And ’bout the size, maybe I got excited and… they were really too big! What size of ice cream or cookie spoon do u recommend me to drop cookies?
Mine were about two tablespoons of dough..
I’ll try them on this way, thanks a lot! I really love ur blog! 🙂
