Star Wars Cookies Using Holiday Cutters
Do you know what happens when you grow up three miles outside of the middle of nowhere?
Since I’m guessing most of you DON’T, I’ll tell ya.
By default, you become a nerd.
I think it has something to do with having to rely on your own imagination for entertainment.
When town kids get bored, they walk outside and play with a neighbor kid. That wasn’t the case for us.
We played Little House on the Prairie (when my brother wasn’t pouting because he had to be Mary) and shot at rocks with our BB guns.
We didn’t watch a lot of TV because our flying saucer-ish satellite dish was often on the fritz, (maybe because we used it for target practice) but if we did watch something, it was usually movies. Dad’s movies, to be exact. The tape kind.
You remember VHS, right?
Anyway, our choices were Dune, Ferris Buller’s Day Off, Back to the Future, Star Wars, and Star Trek.
So, while my brother was busy learning to “mind meld” and speak Klingon, I memorized Ferris Buller’s every word and fell in love with Star Wars. I guess when you watch a movie six times a week, it grows on you.
As a result, I’m now on a quest to become the Jedi master of Star Wars cookies. This is my latest attempt.
Many of you have probably seen these cookie cutters. They came from Williams-Sonoma, and I bought the first set as soon as I learned they existed.
I was SOOOO excited about them, UNTIL I used them.
I just wasn’t feeling the little pushy thing on top. So, when the next set came along, I didn’t even consider buying them.
Of course, I eventually ended up with them AND the sandwich cutters, but only because my brother picked them up for me when they went on clearance.
In the end, gift or not, I didn’t warm up to them. So, in true country-kid fashion, I came up with another way. I used Halloween and Christmas cutters to make my own version.
In Texas, we call that “Southern Engineering”. There were the good guys…
and the bad guys, of course.
And if I hadn’t stopped myself, there might have been ten more.
The skull was the most useful cutter of the bunch. With a little trimming, I was able to make Jabba, C-3PO, an Ewok, Stormtrooper, AND Emperor Palpatine. I’ve also used it to make Darth Maul in the past.
A tombstone became Boba and R-2,
and my Wilton spider made a great Princess Leia and Yoda.
Can you believe that Aniken and Chewbacca were actually Santa?
I was even able to make an Imperial Cruiser and fighter, Darth Vader, and the Millennium Falcon with a candy corn, candy, bell, and Christmas ornament.
Did I mention I am a nerd? I just can’t help it. These guys are old friends.
Each time I make these, they get a little better. This is my best Yoda and Jabba to date. I also decided that adding a little lustre to ol’ Darth gives him a lot of depth and is way more interesting than a flat black cookie.
So, this, folks, is how you make Star Wars cookies, even if you missed the not so great cutters. I’m hoping that one of these days, mine will become a collector’s item and I can sell them on Pawn Stars for a huge amount of money. Too bad I threw away the box!
If you’re a non-nerd, forgive this little geek moment. Hopefully this will at least come in handy if someone asks you for Star Wars cookies.
And all you DIE HARD fans, please excuse any inaccuracies there might be. I took a few liberties with some of the characters to simplify them. Don’t be mad at me.
Just out of curiosity, are you a Star Wars fan? Who is YOUR favorite character? I’m a Yoda girl myself, how about you?
These cookies are beyond awesome! Personally, I’m a Han Solo fan. I think I’ve been in love with Harrison Ford since I was 10.
Amazing as usual. You never disappoint! The detail on these are incredible. I aspire to be as talented as you when I grow up. hahaha 😉
You are so CREATIVE and TALENTED!
You are so CREATIVE and TALENTED!
Best regards from Germany.
Would love to know what frosting you used and what you all used to put it on? Your amazing!
You never cease to amaze me girl!! This is GENIUS!!!
~Liz
I’ve never seen Star Wars. 🙁 I can still appreciate how awesome the cookies are though!! You really are a genius!
These are sooo flippin’ amazing, and I just love your ability to see what “can be” out of “what is” REALLY? Darth Vader out of a Bell?! GENIUS! I’m a fan myself, i just love the friendship between C3P0 and R2D2, they’re so fun!
I really wish i could “ice” the way you do (I’m too scared to try and wouldn’t even know what to buy or where to start)! You’re incredible! Great job!
Holy crap.
I have to close this window RIGHT NOW before my kids come home and demand that I spend the next 48 days doing nothing but making Star Wars cookies. So awesome!!
I am a Star Wars fan. One of my favorite childhood memories is my dad taking me to see Return of the Jedi in the theater on opening night. We stood in line for many many many MANY hours.
Lando is my favorite. Cause he’s so smooth like Colt 45. Also the droids – C3PO because he’s so prissy and R2 because he’s R2!
I am daily amazed and your creativity, artistic ability and what must be and endless supply of patience. My 11 yr son will just be AWESTRUCK when I share these with him this afternoon. You have an amazing gift and I thank you for sharing it with us!
As a fellow nerd and cookie decorator, I love these cookies! I’ve attempted them in the past using templates and stencils but your way is much better. And to be fair, I could never get enough of Han Solo myself. But r2d2 comes in a close second. I always imagine him being rather snarkier and more sarcastic than the writers really let on. May the force be with you.
BLOWN. AWAY. The texture and dimension in these cookies are unreal – I pretty much think that you are the most successful perfectionist out there. If I showed my husband these cookies, he’d leave me and show up at your doorstep. Heck, I’d leave me and show up at your doorstep! 😉
Wow. You are amazing. Your detail work is excellent. I wish I could make cookies like you, but I don’t have the patience.
Those are so freakin’ awsome!! You should just frame them
Love these!! My husband is drooling over them!! You are SO GOOD!!
These are just incredible. Nuff said! 🙂
AMAZING! I loved the Star Wars movies. My favorite character is Yoda. I love the dimension in him and in Jaba the Hut. He’s a big blob of goo I can’t believe you made him look so realistic. I wouldn’t even know where to start.
I grew up living in the country in Iowa and my closest neighbor was 1/2 mile away. So I totally understand the concept of entertaining yourself. I also had a BB gun although I shot at beer cans and not rocks. lol We had 4 stations on the TV and no cable or sattelite back then. Watched what TV I could when there was anything on. We did have one of the first VCR’s in town though, but didn’t have many movies to watch either. Westerns, Cops and Robbers shows and Elvis was about it.
You are not a nerd. Just sayin’
OMG My boyfriend would LOVE these!! I guess that means I should start practicing them 🙂 They are awesome! Probably the best Star Wars cookies I’ve ever seen.
AWE.SOME!!!! love you used your own cutters too…i don’t really want to buy the WS ones 🙂
wow, I know what coockies I’m makeing for my husbands birthday in a few months. yes even 41 year olds need cookies
One word……GENIUS!
This is so freakin’ awesome. And I’m a Mara Jade fan. =)
OMG, these are amazing, Thank you very very much for sharing this great idea. My son will be very thankfull to you. He is a big starwars fan. Thank you very very much!!!!
OH MY GOSH! Okay I may have just fell in love with you even more… but soo not in a creepy way!
I love love love Star Wars and I don’t understand people who don’t. I was actually named after princess Leia (Carrie) and am proud to admit it! I can’t even pick a favorite character… I love so many. And I love what you did with them all in cookie form! 🙂
Anakin/Darth Vader is my favorite!! Great job, makes me want to try but would need the original cutters as a template for decorating. Thanks for sharing.
Your so create of !!! I’m and Ahsoka Tano fan.
So creative!! It’s like you look beyond the the cookie cutter. But I must confess…. I’ve never seen Star Wars. I’m aware of the characters, but have never seen the movie.
Yoda all the way…and I’m a city girl, but I’m also a total nerd! Love, love, love these cookies beyond words! As always…YOU ROCK!
THESE are awesome. I just love your blog. (And I have made your sugar cookie recipe several times now with the almond flavoring). They are the best. Anyway, for the Star Wars cookies, what a great idea. My favorites are Chewbacca and R2D2.
Okay Callye, Hands down, you ARE the Jedi Master!
I just cracked up about your brother being Mary! 🙂 My girls loved “Little House” too! So did I 🙂
You are genius and come up with the best ideas. Thank you so much for sharing all your cookies, ideas and tips with us. You have help me to improve my own cookie decorating skills.
Thank you so much for this short, blissfully geeky moment. I am a teen girl with a borderline obsession with star wars, whereas very few boys i know are even star wars fans. I dont feel as alone in the world knowing that there are other girls/women out there who love to visit the galaxy far, far away as ofen as i do.
YOU ARE A FREAKIN ROCK STAR!!!!! I would KILL to be in your kitchen for a day! Man alive you’re amazing!!!
I am not even a star wars fan, yet I think those are some of the greatest cookies I have ever seen! So cute, and so Jedi at the same time!!!
These are really cool. I have some of the Star Wars cookie cutters but now I can attempt to make more. My favorite character was Princess Leia because she had attitude.
If I was as talented as you are, I would kill the first one who would dare to ONLY TRY to eat one of those cookies … These are ART !
That’s unbelievable, truly.
I’ve been a lurker on your awesome blog for awhile and these cookies brought me out of hiding! 🙂 They are amazing, you are so talented. I love that you share your ideas of different cutters to use for different cookies! Thank you so much!
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!
I didn’t think it was possible for you to absolute astound me anymore than you already have. I was SOOOO wrong! Brilliant job, once again!
OMG, my son would go crazy if I could make those! His birthday is in January and he has been talking for a few months about wanting a Star Wars party. I wish I had your talent!
Thanks for sharing this ideas !! I have a friend who is obsess with star wars and I would like to make him a set for Christmas. Would it be possible for you to do a tutorial on how you iced these cookies? Thank you !
That is absolutely amazing. I bet these would fly off the shelf if you owned a cookis store. How ling did it take you to make these? Also I like the fact that they are just normal cookie cutters. Awesome blog.
This is seriously the best thing ever. I will be sharing with everyone, so hopefully you’ll get some action with this awesome idea!!
xoxoxo Thanks Heather! I love Starwars so these were extra fun to make! Glad you liked and thanks for tweeting =)
amazing… I’m getting inspired
Awesome!! I like Star Wars, but my husband and daughters are the true fans around here. I just showed them your cookies and they are in awe. They are actually putting together a new Star Wars Legos set as I write. 🙂
See, I knew letting my kids get bored was a good idea – maybe some day they’ll be as creative as you! And at least the tapes you got to watch were good ones.
“Beuller? Beuller?”

Thanks SOOO much for the Star Wars fix… I have tried to get the “real” cookie cutters and they don’t freight to Australia. My sons (myself and my husband) are big Star Wars geeks and I know that these will go down a treat! Now all I have to do is practice my icing skills! Big hugs and kisses of gratitude.

Amazing, Callye. Just amazing!
These are probably the most awesome cookies you’ve made 😉
I am stunned! You’ve done an amazing job on these cookies, and with such creativity! You don’t know how tempted I am to run upstairs and wake my husband (a bigger Star Wars geek than I) so I can point and say, “Lookie Lookie!!! These cookies are full of awesome and win!!!” He probably wouldn’t even be irked at me! lol
So what do you use for frosting? It looks like it holds texture beautifully. Does it stay creamy or get crunchy when it dries? So. Full. Of. Questions! lol
I am once again in awe of your creative genius. I have no idea how you think up all of these creative cutter uses, but it is awesome!

I am the mother-in-law of a great guy and he’s a huge, HUGE Star Wars freak. Loves everything about it. These would make his day/week/year – millenium! I used to decorate cakes, so I have some skills at piping, which you’ve done alot of on these cookies. Now…I’ll have to hunt thru my huge box of cookie cutters and see if I have any that you’ve used. This is gonna make me mother-in-law of the year, I’m certain of that. thanks so much for sharing your awesome talents with us, and I will be back quite often to see what else you’ve been up to. I like your style, and I have a feeling….we’ll be best friends soon!!
I love this post. My aunt bought me the WS Star Wars, Cars, & Marvel Comics push button cookie cutters and I HATE them! What a pain in the tush. I have to say when I got the Wilton spider cookie cutter I looked right at my husband and said, “This isn’t a spider cutter, it’s yoda.” Great cookie minds think a like. ;0)
Hi, Perfect timing!! My husband and son have decided on Star Wars as the theme for son’s 6th birthday in a couple of weeks, so… now I need to get creative. Thanks for the fab ideas with these cookies. Now I just need to decide (which may be harder than the making!!!). The cake will be R2D2 so the question is will the cookies be the same or otherwise?!

LOVE LOVE your creativity Callye. Even when you’re discussing a topic that I’m not very interested in (Star Wars – sorry), I’m still completely captivated! I was just telling a friend of mine the other day that I never became a Star Wars fan. I hated the first movie when everyone loved it and didn’t go back for more. And if you really think you’re a nerd, you haven’t lived in my world. We’re the ultimate nerds, but mostly about math and electronics, so maybe that means we’re just geeks and not nerds. Are they different? 😉 Your cookies are amazing as always! Sorry I don’t like Star Wars. I hope you won’t hold it against me 😉
So creative! I love them. Thanks for sharing.

I’m in love with these cookies. I guess some of us just see Star Wars in whatever we happen to be looking at. Amazing job. I’d pay to have someone make these!
Oh, I love them! Your Yoda is AMAZING! And I am a HUGE Star Wars fan/geek! And since this is a post about delicious things, I would have to say the roguish Han Solo is my favorite character. And R2 and Chewy. How do you choose just one?
p.s. Since all the other characters in this cookie set are from the original movies, I couldn’t figure out why you gave Luke a rat tail, haha! But once you said it was Aniken it all made sense 🙂

OH. MY, GOSH!
I LOVE Star Wars too and think it’s because I TOO grew up in the country with no cable and watched copied VHS of all those same movies (except Star Trek), with some others thrown in (Grease, Annie, the Muppets, some others). We shot cans with pellet guns and had an antenna in order to receive one TV channel. I want to gobble these cookies right up!

You are a genius Callye! Cookie (or biscuits as we call them in the UK) decorating is not really a big hobby over here but you have single handedly inspired me to take up the art and my cupboards are now brimming with cutters, thanks to a recent trip to New York. I enjoy your blog and tutorials so much. Cookie decorating is going to take over the UK!

Oh, and my favorite character is R2D2.
Oh what a delight this post was. I love the out of the box cookie thinking I will have to reconsider what the shapes in my vintage cookie cutter collection are for!
These might make fun holiday gifts too. #inspired
I am late to the post but absolutely love these. We are a huge Star Wars family. I even have Storm Trooper Mommy, Daddy and baby decals on my car. I have to say I am love Han Solo.
AWESOME!
You should do a tutorial on how you decorated some of these! I would really love to learn how to!
I plan on it as I have free time, but it may be after the new year…

Oh my goodness- these are so cute!! We are having a Star Wars birthday party for my son in December- these would be perfect! ….do you sell them…? 🙂
I don’t sell cookies, so sorry!
does it have to eat
Oh wow! These are so awesome!! I will definitely have to make these for my husband, and if he won’t like them, well my nieces will. My fav was always Han Solo. How could you not love Harrison Ford?
these are wonderful. I admire your creativity & attention to detail. I have some Star Wars geeks in my house (fave characters~ Boba Fett, Darth Vader & Anakin) which has led me to decorate cake for them but NOTHING like these . AMAZING!
I just want to say that YOU ARE AWESOME!!!! I was just debating if I should buy the Star Wars cookie cutters for my son’s birthday. But after looking at your wondering creations, I think that I’m going to attempt to do them your way. I’m usually the one thinking outside of the straight jacket and making something from another thing that doesn’t really resemble it at all. lol I think that I’ll try to make the Darth Maul like you said that you did.
