DIY Cake/Cookie Stands
This all began with a case of cake stand envy. My friend Glory has the most amazing collection of cake stands, and since I stalk her blog, they were always nearby, tempting me, calling my name…
The problem is, I have not ONCE in my life made a beautiful cake, which makes it hard to justify a collection of cake stands… ESPECIALLY when most of them cost the better part of a hundred dollars.
And even if I could find a way to justify buying one, I need them to display cookies and most cake stands are WAY too big for that.
Then one day, I stumbled upon this amazing idea from Centsational Girl, and my whole world changed. Suddenly it was possible for me to have cake stands in every color without breaking the bank. Even better, I could make them cookie-sized.
That very weekend I hit every thrift store I could find looking for candlesticks and saucers. I found an amazing selection and not one of them cost more than a dollar. All it took was a little E6000 and spray paint and I wound up with THESE!!!
They were SUPER simple to make. First, I matched all the saucers to a base. Then I used E6000 to glue them together. At that point, they needed to dry overnight {It takes at least 24 hours to cure}.
The next day I sprayed the stands with frosted glass spray to prep them for painting. This helps the colored paint adhere to the surface.
When the frosted layer dried I sprayed them with colored paint. I could tell immediately I was going to love the final product.
While making these I learned a couple of things I should share. First of all, it seemed like Rustoleum brand paint gave the heaviest and most uniform coverage. Also, I found it worked best to start with the stand upside down, spray the bottom, let it dry, turn it over and spray the top. After that dries, flip it again, and do any touch ups that are needed.
It’s a pretty simple and inexpensive project, and they really make beautiful display pieces. However, please note, these are not food safe. Be sure to place a barrier between the food and surface of the plates when using them to serve. I used paper doilies as the Centsational Girl suggests, but clear or decorative plates in a similar size work well too.
I LOVE my bargain-priced cookie stands, which is kind of obvious, because I made tons of them!
Every once in a while I would even find candle holders that worked without gluing.
But one day, on another thrift store run, I found something that took GREAT to OUT OF THIS WORLD.
I bought this old cheese dome for three dollars.
Turns out, they make perfect lids for cookie-sized cake plates! {I also noticed later that if you look closely, you can see me snapping the picture and Belle hanging out beside me =)}
As for the base, you can either keep it, or do what I did and use it to make this adorable button wall hanging from Cap Creations.
Two great uses for one bargain buy? That’s a win-win in my book.
I started this obsession way back in June and it’s still going strong. Can you guess holiday what my latest “collection” is for?
{For the record, I didn’t make all of these. The large black stand, bottom right, and the black one up top are store bought}
I hope you can use this idea to pretty up your parties without breaking the bank. I also encourage you to scroll through the comments on Centsational Girl. Her readers had many more brilliant tips and ideas for these.
If you can, I highly recommend taking a day off from cookies to make these. They really are the icing on the cake cookie. With minimal effort and investment you can make your cookies even prettier than they already are!
I love linky parties! YOu find the best things there. I’m linking up with:

I’m totally in love with these cake stands! Thanks so much for passing along the instructions — I’m going to have so much fun picking out my materials 🙂
Awesome they look thanks,.,.
I never thought about this. This is the perfect way to make a custom and unique cake stand that nobody else will have. Will certainly have to try this.
I HAVE to make some! The colors you used are so cool and fun… but what I lovelovelove about these are the COOKIES!!! Perfect as always… love you!
I just made one of these for my daughter’s birthday two weeks ago with a candlestick and plate from the dollar store. It was quicker and easier than looking for the perfect colour online or by driving to multiple stores! It really is super easy (I’m so NOT crafty:)
Those are so freaking cute!!!! I have been searching for various ways to make my own cake stands and yours is probably the easiest! 🙂
Thank you! These will make great holiday gifts!!
I LOVE cake stands and wish I had a whole cabinet full, always searching for them for photos. I have two of the cheese domes and am still contemplating putting a candlestick on the bottom of the wood and painting the wood white….would be pretty I think. Those cheese stands must have been really popular at one point I see them everywhere.
Great COOKIE stands! love the black and orange ones 🙂 I’m inspired to get my craft on!
I am so in love with these but have the crafting skills of a nat!!! So…My 1st question is what is E6000? 2ndly…I have numerous glass cake plates. If I sprayed them with frosted glass spray and then painted, would it work? Thank you so much for sharing you awesome ideas!!!! I look forward to taking these on tomorrow!!!! Take good care! Susan
E6000 is a super strength glue/adhesive. You can find it at most craft stores
Love these. Never thought about painting them. I have the one large black stand that you bought too, bought it on discount after the holiday! We recently went to an antique store and found lots of cut glass plates and candlesticks to make our own stands with. They were a reasonable price and not really antiques. Saw some antique ones I would have loved to make cake stands with, but my DH didn’t agree :0( . Maybe next trip! Thanks for sharing this. I am becoming a cake stand aholic!LOL
What a great collection of cookie stands you have made for yourself Callye. Love the colours you have shown us so far. Looking forward to seeing more of your collection with upcoming posts!
Why am I not surprised? Callye I have been wanting stands for cookies for a while now and after buying a few and them all being too big I was at a loss. I’ve bought candle holders and used for a single cookie, but this idea of yours takes it to a whole new level. Thanks so much for sharing. I will be making some for sure. Fantastic idea!
Would it be to weird if I said “I LOVE YOU” LOL 🙂
I’m glad to hear that you stalk other blogs because I feel like I’ve been stalking you lately :O
One word F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S!!!!!
I love making stands as well, it’s so much easier to custom create them to a specific need and it’s almost unlimited in what you can come up with!!1
I saw a similar idea on Pinterest and loved it! You did an amazing job with yours. I didn’t think it possible for your cookies to get any more cute but those colorful platforms certainly add a playful tone! 🙂
LOVE these! I’ve wanted to make some but just haven’t gotten around to it. Question – what is FROSTED GLASS SPRAY and where might I find that??
Yay! I love them Callye. I love making things from garage sales, thrift stores and dollar stores. A few years ago I was in Dollar Tree and found these adorable tall shot glasses -clear with stripes- in different colors. They had matching plates and bowls. A light went off—cake tier stands with the tall 4″ shot glasses as columns! So cute and it looked very chic 🙂
After that, everything became a cake stand or set of columns or a raised platter! Here’s the link so you see what I mean. This one wasn’t glued yet. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6162/6259908522_f018f39648_m.jpg
Callye you did it again!! You have taken something I wanted and showed me how to do it! Thank you so much!! I am hitting the thrift stores today!!!!
These ideas are absolutely brilliant! As a student I just can’t afford the little extras like cake stands and this is a fabulous way of making cakes and cookies look stunning without breaking the bank! Thank you for sharing 🙂
I must admit I am a cake stand horder. I love them and find it very hard to pass them up when I see them especially at tag sales. I love your idea of spray painting and I will now look at old ones with a new light. I wonder if my husband can build me another cabinet for all these new possibilities? LOL
that is awesome, now I’m hitting the store!
Love your stands! The bright colors are so much fun! I have been making the cheeseboard a stand also by adding a candlestick to the bottom of it! Saw it on-line somewhere. (I find them at my thrift store, too.) You can put so many things under them! They are great for Christmas gifts for my girls!
I need to make more stands!!………..my problem is I don’t have any where to keep them all, I need to move! need more space!lol
these are great callye!
These are so fun! Love these too!
Amazing!!! love them all!
Amazing!! Thanks for sharing!
You are a genius, not only with cookie decorating!! I LOVE these and am definitely going to try and make some for myself. I will look at candle stands and saucers in a whole new light now. Thanks so much for this handy hint!
I love these! I’m digging right now through my old boxes of plates and glasses to see what I can find!
These are so cute. I am hitting the yard sales this weekend to find my treasures. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve heard of doing this but have never seen results; they do look adorable…how fun that they are inexpensive enough to make seasonal cake stands. Very cool
Wow…your stands are awesome looking. Loved all the bright bold colors you chose. Will have to go thrifting soon to make my own unique stands. Great Job & thanks for the instructions!
Love these! I dabbled in DIY cake stands for my brother’s wedding last year, and it was so much fun! Now I want to make some for me 🙂
We have a cute little novelty store in my town and she sell these like hot cakes!! Only they use the glass candle stands and then older antique or collectible plates (which they don’t paint). They are also very pretty… But I love the idea of Painting them for the different holidays! I can’t wait to do a few of my own!
I have loved all the homemade cake stands that I’ve seen, and have been wanting to make some myself. I just love your Halloween collection! You are just full of inspiration! Can’t wait to get cracking!
These are amazing! You will be seeing me pump out a few of these, hopefully soon! Thanks for sharing!
Love them, I’m heading out to my thrift stores riught away! What great gift ideas too!
I have been searching for fun lovely and affordable cake stands for months now! And these are so easy to make, I think you’ve changed my life! I will be heading out to my local thrift store this weekend! Thanks for posting~
You are so clever, Callye. The cheese dome is the cutest idea EVER!!!!!
Wow!!! These are AWESOME!!! Love them all!
quick…must leave for thrift store…NOW! Thank you!
LOVE these!!!
Love the ideas you’ve shared! They all look so adorable!
I am SOOOOOOO loving these!! I need to make some now!!
I just love these! My problem is where to store them! So so cute though!!
I just wanted to say that I started off following you on Flickr through all the cookie ‘drama’ and wanted to congratulate you on your extremely successful blogging career. We all end up where we should be and this is clearly where you should be!
These are so fun! I have made a ton of these lately. However I do them a little different. I just go to Home Sense (in Canada) or like a TJ Maxx or Home Goods, and find plates and cups/candle sticks in colors and designs I already like. That way, I do not have to spray paint them and they are food safe!
They can become addicting to make! My husband stumbled upon my stash of them in my baking closet and was like oh my gosh, how many do you need?! haha Obviously (most) guys don’t get it!
These are adorable. Thrift store finds definitely make me feel accomplished inside ; )
LOVE it! what a great way to recycyle
love – really that’s all i have to say. and that i need to get my thrift store on like NOW!
i LOVE THAT!!! TOO EASY! I’VE TO MAKE IT THANK’S!!!
Ooooh i absolutely love the idea!! They look great!! I wanna try this like right now! But i guess i have to wait until morning T.T First thing ill do is check the attic and the basement, maybe i can find some old candlesticks i can use 😀

Such a great idea. 🙂
This really takes presentation to a new level! love this tutorial!
Hi friend!
You’ve been to Hobby Lobby…I recognize that big black one. I have had my eye on it too. Gorgeous! 🙂
Love the cookie plates and all the pretty colors.
great reminder of a fun and simple way to elegant up one’s cake/cookie stand collection and change things up….plus the “treasure hunt” for the saucers and stands is in its own right a ton of fun!
THANK YOU for sharing!!!! This is the solution to my dilemma!!! Hubby made me a serving coffin last year for our Halloween Party, and I need some stands to elevate the food! Like you I can’t justify the cost! This is brilliant!!! Much easier than what I’ve been thinking about doing. 🙂
Carrie
Love your cookie stands and love your gorgeous flower cookies too! You’re always finding and creating amazing ideas!
I love this idea. Thanks for sharing. I am organizing my wedding, decoration and centerpieces myself, and it gave me lots of ideas. They look pretty much like bought ones. Thanks for sharing.
Oh these are fantastic. I’ve been drooling over Glory’s cake stand collection too but now I have a chance to create some of my own. Thanks for sharing this invaluable DIY project! xx
Hi Sugarbelle! I’m from Spain and I love your web, all days I think “wow, what’s Sugarbelle bakering today?”… Wonderfull!! And this post is super, easy to make it! Thank you very much!!
How fun is this!?! I feel “project day” coming on…
Oh be still my heart…you do realize that by posting this you are “creating monsters”, don’t you? LOL!!!! Gotta hit the thrift store!!!
wow, how smart and creative!!! I like the idea of reusing 🙂
your cake/cookie stands have come out so nice, it’s everything your beautiful cookies really needed. Congratulations
These are fantastic!!!! I love the bright colours! The idea of the glass lid is great too. I make my own as well, using unique candlesticks and another interesting thing to do is find a plate with a cool pattern. That would increase the cost, but still fun.
I love when blogs collide!! I read both your and Centsational Girl on a daily basis. I had the “cake stand” blog starred for future crafty days. Yours came out great 🙂
Hi, Callye. I love these.
Robin
Tell me if you try them~
I saw the original post too and loved it! My worry was whether just a doily would be enough barrier, but it seems to me that if you can wash them without a problem, a doily should be enough! I will definitley be doing this soon! <3
I was a little too, I bought clear glass plates at target and you can hardly see them =)
Ok so i got the paint today, slightly more expensive over here or maybe the store just didnt wanna sell me any cheaper one lol Got the glue. And turns out i just had to ask my grandma for a candlestick. She’s been wanting to get rid off for years. Good thing she didnt 😀 Have the plate. Now i gotta wait till tomorrow so i can actually do this 😀 I’m so impatient too lol
They look fabulous! It’s not often that I’m inspired to do crafts, but I am now.
I REALLY love this idea! Thank you so much for sharing. Looks like I’ll be hitting the thrift stores real soon!
I hope you have a really large storage space for all of the cake stands you’ll be making!! They are so cute the possibilities are endless!
These are so much fun! I’m putting these on my to-do list! Great colors!
This is the best idea EVER. Cake stands tend to be so expensive. Thanks for sharing!
Oh wow, these are just adorable!
I absolutely love these! And I love the idea of repurposing that cheese plate- I think my dad has a few of those hanging around. I’m going to have to try it out, you’ve inspired me!
I love these!! So bright, cute and cheap! But PLEASE tell me where you bought the large black cake stand…I am seriously coveting that one!
My kinda fun. These are all great – the colors, forms, textures – every last bit. Love!
So cheerful, bright and colorful! They made me smile when I saw them!
I have the same black cake stand (lower right) and it is my official Halloween birthday cake, cake stand for my little Halloween girls birthday every year!
I have a funny, my daughter was born on Valentine’s day and guess what kind of party she wants?! HALLOWEEN, LOL! I’m going to have to start thinking early for that one, LOL. PS-I heart hobby lobby, especially thwn the $25 cake stand is 50% off!!!
These look so great! I must try it. The bright colours are awesome!
Just popped over from TT&J
and when you need them for christmas, just re-purpose them and paint them red/green or whatever color scheme you need to match the decor you’re using for this year! 🙂 paint is a whole lot cheaper than cake plates, right?!? 🙂
SO cool!!!
Hii again,
so after waiting impatiently for a few days I finally got to make the stand 😀 I chose metallic red as a color and I absolutely love it!! Looks great 😀 Thanks for the inspiration <3
I wanna see! Put a pic on my FB page!

These are so cool! I’m on my way to the store to find treasures to turn into stands and then use them for Xmas gifts! (filled with treats of course) What a wonderful idea, and so easy, Thank You!
my aunt has the most amazing collection of tea sets and cake stands I’ve ever seen and I’ve always been super jealous of them. Thanks for posting this!
I’m a spray painting fiend too now! 🙂 Spray paint is definitely my friend 🙂
Have you heard back from the publisher? Perhaps I should contact her again… I know with the christmas lists winding down they’ll have more time now.
Let me know
Pip 🙂
now I have cake plate envy, but I was thinking withthe dome these would be great for showwing of other treasures like sheld and even cristmas ornaments could be stacked up and displayed. I know what I’m doing when I hit the thrift stores monday.
