Start The Year Off Right! {Giveaway}
Many people start the year off with resolutions, but since I tend to break them so easily, I like to do GOALS. On December 10, two years ago, I added this entry to my list of goals:
When I wrote that, I did it with good intentions, but who knows what would have happened if life hadn’t set in. Within a month, my beloved grandma, Nanny, passed away.
Few people in life are lucky enough to have what I did with her. Nanny wasn’t often the perfect ideal grandma type, but she loved me unconditionally, even when I didn’t deserve it. She would literally do anything to help me. And despite her shortcomings, she taught me a lot about strength and family and being able to smile, even when life didn’t turn out quite as planned, and for that I am forever grateful.
I knew for a very long time that Nanny’s time was coming to an end, but I guess it never really seemed real until the day before she was gone. Dad called and told me I really needed to think about going to see her.
I usually managed to avoid it, because I was terrified of seeing her so very sick, but since she was no longer able to call me daily, I knew it was time.
When I got there it was as bad as I had imagined. She was painfully thin and unable to speak, and even though I cried the whole drive down, I was determined not to let her know how scared I was because I knew she would worry…and I didn’t want her to worry.
The tough face plan didn’t go so well after I arrived. One of my last memories of Nanny is me turning into a bawling mess while she struggled to tell me that everything would be okay.
It was so very backward in every way…I should have been conforting her, but that was my Nanny, always trying to mend my broken heart.
NOTHING prepared me for the void I felt when she left this world. Suddenly baking became a refuge, my distraction. Now, almost two years later, here I am.
A lot of it is surreal. This time of year takes me back. Sometimes I cannot believe so much time has passed. I have learned SO much and made friends along the way that helped to fill the hole that was left when I lost Nanny.
It also takes me back to those very first days of surfing the net, looking for any and every bit of available information on decorating cookies.
The first website I stumbled upon happened to be Karen’s Cookies. I was absolutely, utterly, and completely amazed at what I found. There I sat in the Hyatt Place during our Christmas vacation, enchanted and ordering every cookie cutter and sprinkle I could afford with my handful of giftcards.
Fast forward to now. Since Karen’s Cookies was the very first cookie door I ever opened two years ago, isn’t it appropriate that for my first big giveaway of the year, Karen so generously offered to provide most of the supplies needed for a prize that I have been dying to give away for 2 months?! For my very first prize of the year, I have, with Karen’s help, managed to put together a wonderful gift! This month’s prize is…
This kit has all the supplies I use to decorate cookies on a daily basis…among them, my favorite icing tips and gadgets, my preferred food colors, icing bottles, DISCO DUST and much much more!
Now, I apologize for the tears. {Nanny didn’t like re-hashing the bad days} And I didn’t mean for this to turn into a sad tale, especially since this is a giveaway…But overall, this has a happy ending. A wonderful new story from the end of another, memories that will always make me smile, and the knowledge that Nanny is just as proud of me now as she was when I was a kid and would draw silly pictures of all of her pals. She carried on every single time like I’d given her a Rembrandt =)
All this said, I really hope this kit falls into the hands of someone who needs it as much as I did at the beginning of my journey, or someone who is as passionate about cookies as I am.
First of all, you can head on over to Karen’s Cookies FB page and “LIKE” her since she was kind enough to do this for me. That’s reason enough to like her in itself. And if that doesn’t convince you, one looksie at her cookie website will!
If you already do “LIKE” Karen, just tell her hello, and come back and let me know…she and her hubby Mike have some of the best service and fastest shipping, AND she has this great habit of always tucking a surprise in each package. You gotta love that!
For a second entry, I just want to keep it simple. Leave me a comment telling me your fondest memory of your “Nanny” {Everyone has a Nanny, whether you call her *or him* that or not}…
There are no rules about what you share, I’d just like to give everyone else a chance to share something special about their loved one.
Remember, each comment IS AN ENTRY, so post each one separately, AND leave a way for me to contact you.
I will choose a winner next Thursday using random.org, so keep your eyes open =)
*and as always, tweeting this giveaway is a free bonus entry*
Since this is a giveaway post, I had a few birthday cookies in the archives that seemed appropriate. Afterall, winning is almost like receiving the gift of all birthday gifts. {That is, if you are into cookies of course =)}
Wow, can I just say that I relate to this post 100% because my grandmother passed away about 7 months ago and she was the one person in our HUGE family that would always bring us together. I miss her so much but now that I am following my baking passion, I know she is with me and watching me every day. My fondest memory of her is when we were at her house and she showed me how to make bread from scratch. It only called for a few ingredients but because she grew up making bread from scratch, I felt closer to her. She also showed me how to make yogurt from scratch which I thought was super cool. I have so much respect and love for her because she raised a family of ten and took care of all her grandchildren as well. I now have been putting my heart into baking and my business more than ever and my grandmother will always be in my heart!

I have also subscribed to Karen's cookies youtube channel and visited her page several times. Her tutorials have been so helpful in my cookie decorating adventures 😀
Oh, my grandmother (mamaia to me). I miss her everyday. She lives 6,000 miles away. She taught me how to bake when I was 10 yrs old, and I have been baking ever since. 20 years later, I still remember the smell of her sweets, and the joy of pulling out some hot sweet bread out of her outdoor clay oven. We lived literally across the street from her, and I spent every minute I had at her house. Such bittersweet memories.
Just tweeted. If you jump to my blog I have a button/link that shows my most recent tweets, as proof!
The best memories for me would be when I was a child and I would get to spend the night at my grandmas' house. When we would wake up in the morning, we would make pancakes. It seems simple enough but sometimes it's the small things that create a lasting memories.
I like Karen cookies on FB!! glad I was this before time is up, do not know how I missed it, I check your blog everyday !
Ok I just went to Karen's website and ordered a bunch of stuff – cookie cutters, food color, and disco dust. YAY !!!
Sugarbelle, you have a great site. I love looking at your cookies – what an inspiration. Please keep posting your tutorials!!
I liked Karen's Cookies on facebook. I can't wait to place my order. I've been looking for the little squeeze bottles that I can attach regular tips to.
I always remember my grandmother coming to visit. I wanted her to visit more often and stay longer, but I cherished that I was lucky enough to have one. She was a great baker and I loved when she made her pinwheel cookies – they are my favorite still. People were always asking for her cakes and other baked goods. I guess I get my "baking genes" from her.

Being the youngest of 7, my parents were pretty old when I was born.. As were my Grandparents. Actually, 3 had passed away before I was even born. I never really had a Gma.
Lucky for me, the man I married still had 2! They have always treated me like I was always their own, so I never feel like I have missed out.
We have a son now, and he has both sets of Grandparents, AND my husbands Grandparents as well! It has made me realize that being a Gma is important, and hope I will have the chance when I am old and gray!
I loved baking with my Grandma. The first thing we ever baked together was banana nut bread. I still use her recipe today and every single time I do, I smile and think of her.
Callye,
I've recently become a fan of your site through University of Cookie. You are incredibly talented, thank you for sharing! I lost my "Mama Sue" two years ago this past December. She was a lady that I worked with that I adopted as my grandmother since mine had both died while I was fairly young. She was spunky, sharp (worked until 83), and adorable. She always dressed to the nines! I miss her terribly.

Hi Callye,
My favorite memory of my granny is when I was eight an she took the time and had the patience to teach me how to crochet.
P.S. I love all your cookie designs and reading your blog.
[email protected]
My Nanny is still around. But my favorite memory of her is when she made some "traditional" irish punch (sans the whisky) and muffins. She brought these to my school and spoke to my whole class about growing up in as an imigrated Irish in NY.
I officially "like" Karen's Cookies on Facebook. And love your website. i just recently found cookie decorating and cant wait to learn more.
I didn't know my Nana for very long as she passed away when I was 5. I do remember sitting at her kitchen table and learning French with her. I remember one time she got mad at me when I fell asleep on her couch and had a little "accident" but then 30 seconds later she'd give me a cookie and tell me it was okay, lol. I miss her so much 🙁

My mom is not a baker…the only thing sweet she ever cooked for me was her famous "arepas de maiz"…ohh they were so good! I always had them for breakfast. I miss them…

Any cookie decorator, new or in the trenches for awhile can stand to use this loot!! Count me in!
Have long been a fan of Karen's Cookies, made it official on her fb page, today!
By the way, great giveaway, Callye!
My favorite memory of my grandma is making sandtart cookies with her and my grandfather. My grandfather was in charge of decorating the cookies and watching the oven while my grandma rolled out the cookies (VERY thin). I usually helped with the decorating and of course eating!

I love your site and your creations and the story behind it.
I'm not sure if it's too late to enter the giveaway, but my fondest memories of my grandmother can be found in this tribute to her:

i just liked Karens cookies on FB…and left them a message too!
I just remember how sweet my nanny Betel was…thanks for making me go back to those memories…
I have 2 wonderful Nanas. I call one "my little Nana" since she is under 5 foot and getting smaller by the day. The other is just Nana, she's the baker. She has been my life long cooking instructor. She has a collection of famous recipes, let me know if you need a wonderful brownie recipe!!! Thanks for all you have taught me!!
[email protected]
My nanny is the best! I call her MAMAMA in spanish. When I was little, she used to pick me up after school and we would always have strawberry pies in a bakery near my house. When I'm sick, she still brings them to me when she visits!

I "like" Karen! Thanks!

I loved going to the beach with both of my Grammys. I wish they could have met my kids. 🙁

We call my grandma "Muffy" and we have spent TONS of time together in the kitchen. She is still around, so we are still making memories… but one of my favorite memories in her kitchen is actually getting my hair washed in the sink! She would setup a little station like we were at a salon; it was such a treat! I will always remember that!

Oh, Callye this post has got me thinking of sooooo many good memories of my grandmothers. Another great memory was growing up in Michigan and in the days of snow all winter long. My grandmother and I would lay belly flat on the red runner sled and slide down hill. The best part was she would always pull the sled back up the hill!
My grandma always used to make her own fresh bread. Whenever we went for dinner we would have to have bread with it. WHATEVER we had for dinner!
[email protected]
My Nana used to take me to Gimbels *REMEMBER GIMBLES?!" here in Philadelphia & we would sit upstairs & have chocolate ice cream in those silver ice cream cups. When I think of her, I always think of those days.
Hi Callye!! My fondest memory of my Grandma was of her teaching me to bake as a child. We spent hours baking cakes and cookies, brownies and making candies. As I got older and started to learn to decorate, I remember decorating my first cake and taking it to the hospital (she had gotten sick)so that she could see it. It wasn't the best, but her expression said that it was. After she passed, baking was the only thing that kept us close. I'd bake for many many people, but got burned out from the users. (I guess I have myself to blame for that) After getting a glimpse of your work, it has motivated me to start again. I've got my happy place again and excited about it. Thanks for your inspiration. ([email protected])
I visited Karen's website and liked her on facebook!
Fondest memory I have with my Yiayia was making home made Greek yogurt. Her house always smelled of fresh bundt cake baking in the oven…mmmmm. I have always loved Karen's cookies…but have not liked her on fb:)
I absolutely adore my grandma. I love hearing all her old stories of dating and marrying my grandfather. They are so in love. She is so spunky and full of life. My most distinct memories of her, that I will cherish forever happened 2 summers ago. I spent the last week of my grandfather's life with her. Helping her care for him and was able to be with her as they said their final goodbye's. It brought us closer than ever…tears on my keyboard.
I stopped by liked Karen's facebook page and said Hi! Thanks ([email protected])
My grandmother passed away 3 years ago this year. We all called her "Ma"…all 13 of us grandchildren. I still can hear her calling my name when I would walk in the door to her house. You could hear the smile in her voice. I miss her.
Oh yeah, I "liked" Karen's page on FB too!

Hi! Since I already "like" Karen's facebook page, I went in and said hi to her. I told her I love her new blog!

HI my favourite memory of my grandma was when
as a child i would stay over and for dinner we would have her version of spaghetti and meatballs!! at the time i loved it and now just think it is adorable – meatballs were the size of tennis balls and spagetti was all chopped up after cooked – this is how she preferred it..Love you nan!!
hi me again – already a fan of karen's. Thanks for another chance to win an amazing prize..ps you really should publish a cookie how to book – you are amazing and an inspiration..
My Nanny was my grandmother's housekeeper. She was the best cook/baker ever. When I went to visit my grandmother I would sneak out to her room at night and she would talk to me and read to me and tell me stories. During the day I would help her bake goodies. When I was away I would write her letters and she always wrote me back.
My favorite recipe was her sticky bun recipe. The day she passed away was one of the saddest days of my life and I had to mourn her in silence since my grandmother did not allow me to be her friend. I remember her fondly every time I smell freshly baked sticky buns. I miss her every day.

I liked Karen on FB!
My fondest memory is sitting in her room (she lived with us) and having her help me with my math homework, while she made dried out broiled chicken for me lol
I really like Karens site and fb page! excited to share it with my cake decorating students! I love cookie decorating!!

I have all kinds of favorite memories with my Nannie. One of my (on going) favorites is when she comes out for spring training games and we just get to sit, hang out and talk.

I already "Like" Karen.. left a comment saying hi!!!
I don't have memories with my grandma but rather with my great grandma. She was truly my "Gammy." I remember her amazing cooking! Even at 90+ she wore a tiny belt around her tiny waist and only gave us small portions of her amazing food. lol. She was beautiful and I miss her snow white hair and her aromatic beans!
I just said hello to Karen. Shes got the greatest website, doesn't she?
Anyway, my favorite memory of my little french grandma, or as we called her, Memere, was at Christmas. Christmas Eve she would always put this huge spread on her table. This happened at 10:00PM and the entire family gathered. Then off to Midnight mass we would all go. It was always such a fun time.
My email addy is

My favorite memory of my "Grammie" was when I would stay at her house & she would tell me the whole story of "The Wizard of Oz" (without reading it from a book) & we would sing all of the songs together until one of us (usually her…lol) would fall asleep. I'm lucky to have her–and a great-grandma, Neenie, too!
Oops– and my email address is [email protected]
Thanks a bunch!
My favorite Granny memory is dining on meals of her amazing Swiss Steak & mashed potatoes. Being surrounded by her & family was icing on the cake!
My Grandmother is 89 years old and still water skis in the summer in PA and then golfs all winter in FL. I want to be her when I grow-up!
Thanks!
Christy
Ahh, I still have both my "Nanny's" but I call them Aana (Eskimo for Grandmother) and Grandma…English, for (haha, nevermind!)
My grandmothers taught me how to be the Best Eskimo and Finn one could be. Especially sewing. Skins and fabric. Love them.
And…I liked the FB page…AND am going to make an order from the site!
What great "grandma" stories! I didn't get to spend much time with my mother's mother in my life, but I have to say, the time I did has remained with me. She was such an independent thinker and explorer, especially for a lady who pretty much raised 4 kids on her own while my grandfather was a commercial pilot. She was well read and demanded that we learn to think for ourselves. And boy, would she let you know if she thought you were being silly. She had a very twisted sense of humor. She made jello molds in an old bra stand… the jello boobs were VERY popular at her parties. She was also well known for her baked goods. I learned a lot from her, just in the few times I saw her. Every time I bake, I think of her, and the fun we would have in the kitchen, even when she was older and ill and it took all day to fix dinner.
I'm off to "like" Karen…
Hi Calley,
Unfortunatly both my grandmothers passed away when I was very young so I relive through the stories my parents tell me. I guess my grandmother loved to sing to me and my sister and would everytime she saw us. Her favorite song to sing to us was "You Light Up My Life." To this day both my mom and dad get chocked up when they hear the song. It's a reminder of how much my grandmother really loved us.
I liked Karen on FB as well.

For the love of cookies… My grandma (BoBo)was an awesome cook and baker… We were always together in my younger years.. One of my favorite kid memories w/her.. Outside making mud pies:) What a lovely lady she was!

My grandma lived in a small town, and I lived on a farm. Each Saturday, we would go to town, pick up grandma, and go to the grocery store. During the summer, we would mow her grass after going to the store. Her mower did not have a bagger on it, and so she took a cardboard box, poked two holes and strung a rope through it, so she could pull it around and pike up the piles of grass clippings we raked up for her. She was a very hard worker. She made us be hard workers too.

I liked Karen's cookies on facebook! 🙂
Thank you for directing me to Karen's site & fb page! Your blog is now the first thing I open each day and inspires me beyond words!!
My beloved Nanny passed away in 1978, and yet the memories I have of her are still very vivid… Nanny braided rugs. Beautiful, richly coloured rugs stitched from hand-me-down woolen clothing from family and pieces she found at Church rummage sales. Nanny's rugs won prizes at fairs. Many have survived and live in the homes of her daughters and their children. Nanny loved sweets & cookies with her tea…
My grandma is still alive, and I will always cherish her memories…she always lets me stand with her in the kitchen and discuss food with me. She took care of me as a child, and I love her so much
I "like" Karen's cookies!
When I was growing up I loved to bake over any other thing around the house. One day I really messed up a batch of cookie but my "nana" helped me and we saved them. And I still would rather bake then do laundry and cleaning.
I "Like' Karens cookies but really I Love her cookies!
Thanks!
~Donna A~
I "like" Karen's cookies!
We'll I would like to say that I had a Nanny, but I hadn't, my father's mom died when he was 2 years old. And my mom's never was a sweet Nanny, so I don't have any sweet memories about them. But luckly I had to my Step-Grandfather, he was the second husband of my Gradma(mom's mom). For me, he was the best grandpa anyone could have had. While I was a girl I never knew he was not really my mother's father, he never mentioned it, I knew it many years later when he was dying because of cancer.
He never made a distinction between those who were his real grandchildren and those who don't, he always loved us equal, I can say that thanks to him I had a grandfather of those four that originally I should have had, someone who loved me, and gave me not just to me sweet memories even when he was no of my blood.
My favorite all time favorite moment with him was when I saw him playing his guitar, he loved sing Pedro Infante's songs, and I always remember him this way.
Thanks Grandpa Enrique for be my ONLY granpa and for all those sweet moments, and thanks Callye for bringing him back to my memory…
I've"liked"Karen's cookies for awhile now and love their quality products!
I Lost my grandma when I was 7 months pregnant with my youngest child she swore I was carrying a girl (not) it was a big bouncing boy! LOL! I am sure she was in heaven laughing because she never guessed right for any of the grand kids. It makes me smile when I think about it.
I lived with her till I was 12, she was a huge part of my life and still is.
~Blessings~

Sadly, my grandmama passed away when I was about nine so I don't have a lot of memories of her. There is one that has always stuck with me though. My father's side of the family is all French and my grandmama didn't really speak English and I didn't speak French. I remember sitting in their living room one visit and doodling little images for her (little hearts, and "I love yous," shading the paper in with pencil and then using an eraser to draw the image). I've always regretted that I couldn't really speak to her because of the language barrier. That was a huge factor in my decision to switch to French immersion as soon as the opportunity came in grade 6. I continued French immersion all the way through high school and now am bilingual and can finally communicate properly (if still hesitantly and with some challenges) with my French family.
damnit now I'm gonna cry at my keyboard! lol
My most favorite memory of my grandma was how she would always have a project for us when we came to visit. She was very crafty and I loved getting into her paints, I really miss her! Xoxo grandma!
My Grandmother and I used to bake cinnamon rolls together from scratch. She made pies for a living (and sold them to restaurants under the radar lol) and it seemed like she could whip up something amazing from any random pantry items! My brother and I would always fight over who got the ooey gooey roll in the middle! Miss her 🙂

I lost my only grandma this past summer. I remember my childhood summers spent out at her lakefront cabin. She taught me how to swim and made it seem not so scary.
She was 92 years old on her last birthday, so her passing was not unexpected, but it was sudden.
I am sorry for your loss.
hugs,
Heidi

I follow Karen on Facebook 🙂
Thank you for introducing me to such a great site.

Both of my grandmothers lived quite far away from us,one across the country, the other in Ecuador, so we never really got to see either of them. The only memories I have are of pictures of them, since when we visited I was far too young to remember. I hope to visit them again soon, so I can create some memories before its too late….

Callye, thank you so much for sharing your touching story about your nanny. I was not fortunate enough to have a close relationship with either of my grandmothers as they both lived in a differnt country. I saw them once every three to four years at best. Both my grandmothers are both gone now but I know they are looking out for me from above.
I liked Karen's cookies!
Recently I was peeling a tangerine and realized that it probably the one smell that really reminds me of my grandma! She LOVED christmas, and with that – came lots of real tangerines (not the cuties). She passed away about 18 motnhs ago, so it's the little smells and things that are a great way to bring back happy memories.
I also just "liked" Karen's cookies – thanks for the great online resource!
I was never lucky enough to live close to either of my grandmas, or to have a close relationship with them. I am grateful every day that my grandma raised my mom to be the person she is because I could not ask for a better mother. I wish that I had the chance to be closer to my grandmother before she passed away.
I 'liked' Karen's page!! Wonderful, wonderful stuff!
My grandma died when I was very young, but I remember going to her house and her making me her 'special hot chocolate'! Looking back, it wasn't the hot chocolate that 'special'…it was her!
My Nenaw had a smell all her own. It was somewhere between Oil of Olay and Most Precious. I still remember that smell, and the feel of her hands when she was sharing her hand lotion with me. Great memories.

I loved Gramma J's quirky ways of substituting ingredients – for example: no ketchup for the burgers? just use strawberry jam, it's red too! And I also loved to hear her talk about her parakeet, Twan Twitter! Oh, so many memories I could go on and on!
My favorite memory of my grandma is me and her making fudge for christmas when i was little. She was the best fudge maker around! still is if you ask me 🙂
The holidays always make me miss my Oma…she was such a wonderful woman. I hope to pick up her habit and ability to keep the whole family in contact. And she would write letters and send cards for no reasons….on top of it all the time.
Your cookies are amazing.
I tweeted this post. I am also sharing it with a young girl just getting started baking. She is one talented senior.

I loved playing bingo with my Grandma. Her town used to have TV bingo on Thursday nights, so we would buy a ton of tickets and junk food and make a night of it. In the 3 years we did this, I won the blank-out once and we split it because I was still under-age.
I learned to bake from my mom, and my fondest memory is of us making cutout cookies and divinity at Christmastime. I lost her at age 49, and miss her very much.
Thank you for the reminder of those special times. 🙂
Hola Callye, I liked Karen cookies!
My favorite memory…my maternal grandmother grinding corn to feed the chickens in her farm. I was about 4, I also loved her cooking.
Have a great evening, Callye and thanks for this give away.
