Start The Year Off Right! {Giveaway}
Many people start the year off with resolutions, but since I tend to break them so easily, I like to do GOALS. On December 10, two years ago, I added this entry to my list of goals:
When I wrote that, I did it with good intentions, but who knows what would have happened if life hadn’t set in. Within a month, my beloved grandma, Nanny, passed away.
Few people in life are lucky enough to have what I did with her. Nanny wasn’t often the perfect ideal grandma type, but she loved me unconditionally, even when I didn’t deserve it. She would literally do anything to help me. And despite her shortcomings, she taught me a lot about strength and family and being able to smile, even when life didn’t turn out quite as planned, and for that I am forever grateful.
I knew for a very long time that Nanny’s time was coming to an end, but I guess it never really seemed real until the day before she was gone. Dad called and told me I really needed to think about going to see her.
I usually managed to avoid it, because I was terrified of seeing her so very sick, but since she was no longer able to call me daily, I knew it was time.
When I got there it was as bad as I had imagined. She was painfully thin and unable to speak, and even though I cried the whole drive down, I was determined not to let her know how scared I was because I knew she would worry…and I didn’t want her to worry.
The tough face plan didn’t go so well after I arrived. One of my last memories of Nanny is me turning into a bawling mess while she struggled to tell me that everything would be okay.
It was so very backward in every way…I should have been conforting her, but that was my Nanny, always trying to mend my broken heart.
NOTHING prepared me for the void I felt when she left this world. Suddenly baking became a refuge, my distraction. Now, almost two years later, here I am.
A lot of it is surreal. This time of year takes me back. Sometimes I cannot believe so much time has passed. I have learned SO much and made friends along the way that helped to fill the hole that was left when I lost Nanny.
It also takes me back to those very first days of surfing the net, looking for any and every bit of available information on decorating cookies.
The first website I stumbled upon happened to be Karen’s Cookies. I was absolutely, utterly, and completely amazed at what I found. There I sat in the Hyatt Place during our Christmas vacation, enchanted and ordering every cookie cutter and sprinkle I could afford with my handful of giftcards.
Fast forward to now. Since Karen’s Cookies was the very first cookie door I ever opened two years ago, isn’t it appropriate that for my first big giveaway of the year, Karen so generously offered to provide most of the supplies needed for a prize that I have been dying to give away for 2 months?! For my very first prize of the year, I have, with Karen’s help, managed to put together a wonderful gift! This month’s prize is…
This kit has all the supplies I use to decorate cookies on a daily basis…among them, my favorite icing tips and gadgets, my preferred food colors, icing bottles, DISCO DUST and much much more!
Now, I apologize for the tears. {Nanny didn’t like re-hashing the bad days} And I didn’t mean for this to turn into a sad tale, especially since this is a giveaway…But overall, this has a happy ending. A wonderful new story from the end of another, memories that will always make me smile, and the knowledge that Nanny is just as proud of me now as she was when I was a kid and would draw silly pictures of all of her pals. She carried on every single time like I’d given her a Rembrandt =)
All this said, I really hope this kit falls into the hands of someone who needs it as much as I did at the beginning of my journey, or someone who is as passionate about cookies as I am.
First of all, you can head on over to Karen’s Cookies FB page and “LIKE” her since she was kind enough to do this for me. That’s reason enough to like her in itself. And if that doesn’t convince you, one looksie at her cookie website will!
If you already do “LIKE” Karen, just tell her hello, and come back and let me know…she and her hubby Mike have some of the best service and fastest shipping, AND she has this great habit of always tucking a surprise in each package. You gotta love that!
For a second entry, I just want to keep it simple. Leave me a comment telling me your fondest memory of your “Nanny” {Everyone has a Nanny, whether you call her *or him* that or not}…
There are no rules about what you share, I’d just like to give everyone else a chance to share something special about their loved one.
Remember, each comment IS AN ENTRY, so post each one separately, AND leave a way for me to contact you.
I will choose a winner next Thursday using random.org, so keep your eyes open =)
*and as always, tweeting this giveaway is a free bonus entry*
Since this is a giveaway post, I had a few birthday cookies in the archives that seemed appropriate. Afterall, winning is almost like receiving the gift of all birthday gifts. {That is, if you are into cookies of course =)}
I am already laughing just typing this comment. I used to make faces alot when I was little and my Grams used to always say to me, "Stop it, or your face is going to stay that way"! I love those memories, they always get me smiling. Thanks for your story.

My favorite memory with my grandma is a cookie memory. She let my cousin and I bake our own cookies. By mistake, we added 1 cup of baking soda to our mix, rather than 1tsp. Gramma was still proud of us and wrapped our cookies up and took them to our moms. I can still taste the baking soda…LOL

I always loved visiting my Granny. There was always something to do at her house. She made me feel important and needed when she would ask me to help her with the chores. And as a reward for all my hard work, she would make my favorite fried porkchops for supper.

My grandma is seriously the best cook ever! (well I bet everybody says that about their own grandmother :p) She learned her way out in the kitchen after she married my grandpa at 16 years old (not pregnant btw, just in love ;)) and I like to think that I got my own culinary talents from her… I remember the first time I was in charge of a dish for a family dinner, it was thanksgiving, and she was sooooo nervous, she would anxiously call my mother to see if I was doing ok, and if I wouldnt forget, or just messed it up (she get really serious when it comes to hosting) and then after the dinner, she came to me, an said "I was so nervous because you were cooking…but I know better know…btw your doing some dishes for christmas) She may not be perfect, but I simply adore her.

Ohh I also liked karen cookies on FB and left her a comment 😉
BTW LOVEEE your blog, and seriously you are a TRUE artist, God bless you 🙂
I "liked" Karen's Cookie FB page. My fondest memory of my grandmother (Nanny to you and Greatmother to us, as my niece couldn't say Great-grandmother) was just sitting quietly with her about a week before she passed away (5 days shy of her 101st birthday). We held hands and I fed her a cupcake. 🙂
I "liked" Karen's Cookies on FB. I've ordered many things from her and am always very happy with their service and they are just really nice people!
One of my many memories of my "Nana" is going to her house on the holidays and the delicious chicken and matzo ball soup she would make. No one can duplicate it!
Didn't really spend much time with my Nonna becasue she lived in Italy but I do remember how loved I felt the times that I did go to visit her. Love your blog!

I now "like" Karen – [email protected]
My fondest memory of my grandma is having her teach my a few of her "recipes" I just couldn't seem to get them right. Could have been the fact that there were no actual measurements to her cooking. It was always something like "then you add salt, about this much (just pours some in the pan) you will know. Love my grandma!
I "like" Karen's cookies.

I have very fond memories of my Nanny. Right now especially because she is very sick and has just had a stroke so going down memory lane everyday as I see her is hard not to do. When I was little I used to spend every weekend with her and we would play dress-up, baby dolls, color, or whatever I wanted to do. She also was the one who gave me the love for cookies. I remember so many Christmas' making dozens of different kinds of cookies in her tiny kitchen, just the two of us, and having the best time-always giggling. I love my Nanny!

Both my Mamaw Shelton and Mamaw Puckett had to go to a nursing home. It is so very hard to go see your loved one in that condition. I helped to take care of Mamaw Puckett to try and keep her home as long as possible but she had alzheimer's(hope I spelled it right)and eventually we had to take her to the nursing home because we did not have to ability to care for her at home any longer. Mamaw Shelton was not in good health due to rhumatoid arthritis but she would have Papaw bring her to sit with me at Mamaw Puckett's so she could give me emotional support. I can't tell you how much that helped. It's a great strain mentally on a person in charge of the care of their loved one day in and day out. It meant the world to me and I love and miss them both so very much!
I just " liked" Karen – and I really do!! 🙂
Some of my favorite memories of my Grandmother was playing dress up with all her clothes and jewelry. And then she'd serve me cheese wiz on ritz crackers! Lol she wasn't much of a cook but they were served with love!!!
Oops! Forgot! [email protected]
Unfortunately I had not the opportunity to know my grandmothers. But I knew a friend of the family, Consol, who won an enormous place in my heart. A place that nobody else could ever play.
I miss you so much auntie :O)

SORRY IF THIS IS A REPOST-I'M HAVING COMPUTER ISSUES THIS MORNING.
What a wonderful walk down memory lane for you. I too did not grow up with grandparents near or any part of my life. I did have grandparents of friends who were the "Grandma" influence to me. That, I believe is where I go my baking inspirations. I would watch them with amazement and was very jealous of my friends.
On my way now to Karens page. Have a blessed day and thank you so much for sharing the love you had with and for your Nanny.
Also I want to thank you for all of the information you continue to share with us "not so professional" comrads. I so love seeing new posts from you and seeing what new ideas and inspirations you have in store.

I Liked Karens Cookies on facebook, she has some awesome stuff 🙂
I love ordering from Karen and just "liked" her on facebook. Thanks!
One of my favorite memories of my nana was playing checkers with her. She would never just "let me win"…so anytime I did win it made me that much more proud of myself (because she was an amazing player and person in general).
Just tweeted about the giveaway! https://twitter.com/#!/kerrijune/status/25538474966781953
We played board games all the time. I miss sharing those moments with her.
First time I've been to Karen's — she has some great stuff — unfortunately Christmas wiped out my 'slush' fund so it'll have to wait a little while before I can go wild on her site! LOL
Reading all the comments is so very touching — such lucky people to have such great memories. Sadly, I can honestly say I am not lucky enough to share in a 'Nanny' memory. My mom's mom died when she was an infant and she was raised by her grandmother who sadly also passed away before I was born. My paternal grandmother died when I was around 4 or 5 and I have but one photo with her. AS we lived far away from them I think I may have seen her as an infant/toddler only 2 or 3 times. My grandfather remarried a while later – shortly after 'Aunt Jessie" (that's what we called her) started to develop Alzheimers and my only memories of her are that of a rude, moody, teenager(me!) making fun of her behind her back when she continually asked me the same questions – Yes – I will go to H*ll for that one! Not my proudest moment by any stretch. So any and all of my baking experience was with my Mom and older sister — we did have some fun times in the kitchen though!! I'll always remember making up songs with my sister as we washed up the dishes after making a mess in the kitchen (in the pre-dishwasher era!)!
I lived with my grandparents during the summers. My grandfather worked at an amusement park and I got to ride all the rides, go roller skating etc. everyday. It was heaven. My grandma on every wed. would leave 2 dollars under the dresser scarf in my bedroom and say don't tell your grandpa. She was a 5 foot dynamo and taught me to bake, cook and stand on my own two feet. I wish she could have stayed around much longer. So many memories…thanks for the opportunity. I love your sight and can't wait to see new posts, they always make me smile. Karen [email protected]
My favorite memory of my Grandma is when she was making her Blueberry Banana Pie and Apple Dumplings! Yum!
I forgot to say the other day that I "liked" Karen's Cookies on FB. I also placed an order yesterday! Cutest mouse cutter ever!
Hey Callye, I just tweeted your giveaway!
We call our grandmothers 'LOLA' in the Philippines. I have two Lola's[the mom of my papa and mom of my mama] One of them passed away when I was a kid and my fondest memory of her is that when she scolds me big time for sneaking out of the house to bathe in the sea during summers. [haha yeah I was a naughty kid…but I love the beach!] My Lola who still lives to this day is my mentor in baking. She taught me the basics from measuring ingredients, lighting an oven, etc. She's not always the sweetest person to be around with but I appreciate her because I know she's just looking for what is best for us. 🙂

My nanny, whom my sisters and I call "Mamaw," used to make the world's greatest homemade mac and cheese. Just about every time we were over for dinner, she'd make a batch especially for me and send all the leftovers home with me too!
My favorite and most distinct memory of my Gram is that her and Gramps would always be there waiting to see me after school. They were the sweetest old couple that did everything together, they would make the short trip from a rural near by area into the small town where we lived in there new Mustang (1968 I think)!!! It was sooo funny to see an elderly couple in a new Mustang, but they didn't care they had a blast! I often wondered if they were coming to see me or was I an excuse to go cruising. Whatever the reason was I miss her and her sweet loving way greatly!!
Well, I did it….I hopped over to Karen's *(and ate all of her adorable cookies while i was there!) and "liked" her….actually "love" her, but that option didn't exist!!
I "like" Karen's page on Facebook under Lisa B.

I have so many memories of my grandmother but one of my favs is cooking Christmas dinner every year with her. We made "her meal"-roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut. To do this day, we still make it every Christmas day!

my favorite memory of my nana is trying to learn how to make her fudge. she made the best peanut butter fudge but she never used a recipe, or even a measuring cup! so we watched her make a batch and wrote it all down…we even tried to measure to see what size her hand was (1/4 cup, i think!)
I like Karen's cookies and i think the online shop is the best for decorated cookies. [email protected]
Your blog is amazing and your work too!! Congratulations!!
I "liked" Karen's FB page. I can't wait to go shopping.
My nanny was my grandmother, I love she a lot. She teach me things real important in life. I don't know what I would do without all her conversations. [email protected]
I remember playing bingo and cooties withe my Grandma while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
I'm so sorry about your Nanny. I can only imagine the void her loss leaves. I'm blessed that my Grammy is still alive. Unfortunately, I live 3000 miles away. This past November I made a point to go home for her 90th birthday. I wasn't able to take my husband or my boys with me. It makes me sad to know that this is probably the last time I will see her. She's ailing and we count each day as a blessing. While I was there, I was able to sit with her in her den and just talk. She shared stories about how she met my Grandpa and their life together. She told me about the day my mom was born. I told her all about my boys and what they were up to. I even took her onto facebook to share a bunch of pictures of them with her. She was blown away by technology. LOL I made her a promise that getting home again was my top priority and this time I would bring my husband and kids. The night before I left she came into my room and told me she loved me and she was very proud of the woman and mother that I'd become. *Now I have tears on the keyboard*. At 90 she's accomplished so much and she's proud of me! Makes my heart swell! Thanks for letting me share.

Love your blog, love your work, love your Nanny memories. My Grandma memories are of chocolate chip cookies, card games with her friends, and as an adult, knowing she would smile and be happy no matter what you were doing in life. She was just a happy lady. I hope to be like her when I am a grandma!!!

My favourite thing about my granny is that she has more of a sweet tooth than anyone I know. Particularly at christmas she will load up any pudding she's having with custard, cream, brandy butter and topped off with a sprinkling of sugar!
My "Nanny" was Grandma to me. She too was a baker, from Scotland, that came over here on the Queen Mary in 1912. Her mother, sister and her were actually booked on the Titanic but for some reason was cancelled and they came over in June that year. Call it an omen, I like to think she probably would have been leading the rescue, she was just that type of person. She made the best shortbread this side of Scotland, and without a bowl. She passed in 1987 at the age of 96 and I still miss her dearly to this day.
My nanny is mamá. I am the first female grandaughter so I am "la nena" which I would translate as "the baby girl" still at age 36!, we are so many now that I've lost count… maybe close to 30 grandkids! She loves cooking and most of all CRAFTS! I believe I got the artistic side from her and that makes me really proud. Everything I do now makes me think that she would love it!
GrandFeathers, as we called her, made the best breakfast in the world. And she served it on these beautiful chicken plates and mats. I loved the mornings with her.
I like Karen´s cookies FB already, I always buy from them as they are fast al reliable
I´m very lucky because still have both of them alive (with 95 and 89 years!!) and the best is when all the family stay together around them at their birthday celebrations

…ok, now for the real tears… I just typed of a (too long) entry about my grandpa who passed in September… and clicked "post", which ate it!!! :'o(
I guess i should try to be more concise–
:o(
My favorite memory of my grandpa, who was the greatest man that ever lived and made me the woman I am today… is growing up in his sewing machine repair shop, watching him play guitar in his office, and having him make me feel like such a large part of 'the shop' by having (tons of) pink business cards printed that read "Sewing Machine Repair Apprentice".
…and so much more that's just too long to list, lest my comment get eaten again!(though I did blog about him here: http://www.theconnectedmom.com/2010/09/whatcha-need-to-know-wednesdays)
We always went to Kansas over Thanksgiving to be with my grandma. The day before, we would make homemade chicken and dumplings, I would help her roll out the dough and make the dumplings. Then the friday after Thanksgiving, we would make homemade cinnamon rolls. It's the best memory I have of her.
any time i was able to spend with my grandma was my favorite! she died when i was 22 so every memory is the best!
I absolutely ADORE your cookies! You have the ability to make a cookie into art. I am seriously just so impressed with your cookies, they have inspired me to start making cookies on my own (though my attempts have been quite tragic. lol)
My granny died when I was 13 but I have several fond memories of her. Cooking just about anything was her specialty. We grew up in the south and she had her own garden. She used to make me get on out there and pick peas, shell em, and help her cook them up! I really miss her and hope to share with my daughter some of those same memories I have with her.
[email protected]
Oh! And I forgot to mention that I "Liked" Karen's Cookie Page on Facebook!!

I am Karen's newest Facebook follower. Now I have to go check out her cookie site
The fondest memory of my grandma would be trying to dress me up in her clothes to make me look older to take me to BINGO with her. She passed away this past August.
On of my most favorite memories of my grandma Lena is being with her in her kitchen. My dad was one of 11 kids so I have a TON of cousins. I asked what would happen if we made the popcorn without the lid. Well guess what?! She let us do it. There was popcorn flying everywhere and we were grabbing it and laughing and laughing and trying to catch it in our mouth. It was a riot. Such a joyful memory. My grandmother was not a woman with money by any means but she sure knew how to share her love. Thanks Grandma!!
My grandmother was a adopted grandma, she always treated me with the most love she could give. Every time we went to her house, my sister and I knew we'd be baking cookies, or making caramel corn. She was famous for both!
I absolutely love Karens cookies. Have liked her on facebook for sometime now. Already dropped a hello note to her. I recevied my wedding cake cookie cutter from her just recently…thats my newest tackle in decorating…getting ready for my daughters wedding in Sept. My goal this year is to be as talented as Sugarbelle!!!! LOL. I can only pray and hope!
Unfortunately I never got to know my grandparents on my mothers side and only got to briefly know my grandfather from my fathers side. I was 2 when I last saw him. I remember the smell of pipe tobacco throughout his house and a large back yard. Not much for remembering at such a young age.
I LOVED your story! I was very close to my Gram and we did a LOT of baking together. My fave memory is the Christmas cookie marathons we would do together. They weren't as beautiful as YOUR creations but I am sure that in Gram's eyes mine were.
Oh, and I wish there was a "LOVE!" button for people like Karen on FB! I would upgrade my "like" in an instant!
The sweetest memories of both of my grandmas is the fact that they both enjoyed making things and would always have a project for me to help with.
I liked karen, sorry for your loss. One of my fondest memories was my grandma kept a fancy tin and always put her pennies in it for me! Also any little fun silly thing like a give away or party favor that she got. So whenever I visited her, usually biweekly, I always would run up and hug her and then run to see what was in my tin! 🙂
Thanks for the contest! I really want to practice my cookie decorating this year.
Carrie
I "like" Karen's Cookies on Facebook.
I tweeted!
Thanks for introducing me to Karens! She's on my FB feed now!
My favorite memories of my MawMaw are from when I was a little girl. My parents worked, so I spent a lot of time hanging with my MawMaw and PawPaw. MawMaw taught me how do my own mani/pedi's way before the rest of the world learned, how to dress in bright colors with reckless abandon, and to have no fear of trying new things and dishes in the kitchen. She's one tough broad, and I love her for that! Her health is failing now, so I treasure every minute I get to spend with her – usually it's me painting her nails now, though!
My Nana lived downtown Vancouver,B.C. above a french pastry shop! We alway went in to pick up pastries before going up the elevator. She would ask " What do you fancy?" So delicious with tea in her pretty teacups. There wasn't a pastry I didn't like!
My grandmother was not wealthy, but she was uncompromising about beautiful things. When eating alone, she set out all her gorgeous china. She taught me to crochet and passed on to me a love of textiles. I miss her very much and imagine that when I someday pass on, she will be right there to greet me.

My grandmother or "Madea" passed down her love of gardening and cooking to me. She always made the biggest breakfasts for us when we visited. She was not a cereal and milk person. She also had a great love for flowers and plants which would account for the abundance of plants in my possession!
I liked KarensCookies on Facebook!
My favorite memory of my Granny is walking into her house and smelling fresh-baked bread. She always gave us bread with butter and brown sugar on it!
My favorite Grandma memory has to be the amazing sugar cookies she always made when we were younger. She literally had a cookie jar filled every time we went to visit.
I liked Karen on FB!
I lost both of my grandma's when I was in High School. Both were awesome bakers. My fondest memory is of my mom's mom rolling out dough in our kitchen to make noodles, kolaches and rolls. Every time I roll out cookies, I think of her.
my grandma taught me most of what I know about cooking – she is amazing
I don't know if it is my favorite but it is my last and most clear in my mind. I got a call from my mom that my "grandmaman" was in the hospital she lived 4 hours away I booked a ticket with greyhound and was by her side 2 days later. We spent the whole day together she told me every memory she had of my childhood as we held hands, the doctor told me she had about 4 months left. I had to get back home for work so I left thinking I'd be back the next weekend, we never really said goodbye it was more like a visit. I got back home and was getting myself settled when I felt something in my room and my dog flipped out barking, I went to bed and was woken up early the next morning by a phone call from my mother telling me that my grandmaman had passed away the night before. This happened 20 years ago but I remember that night like it was yesterday.
Love your cookies. I've just started decorating cookies and look for occasions at which to take them. Three grandma memories. Great Grandma Cecelia, playing cards when she was well into her 80's and you had to win fair. Grandma Rosella, swimming and trying to learn how to float like she did. (Sitting position) Grandma Ada, riding the bus with her from New Orleans to Detroit after a month long visit in 1964. Thanks for the memories; I loved my grandmas.
Thanks for offering this fun give-away Callye & Karen! I liked Karen and checked out her site. I keep trying to post on your blog, but I get swept away by looking at all your posts and cookie pictures! I have many memories of my grandma. My sister and I used to put on plays for her and my grandpa. They thought we were silly and we were. My favorite memory is when I had my daughter – their first great grandchild. My grandma cried and I asked why and she said that she desperately wanted to hold Mellissa, but she was afraid that her hands shake too badly. I then brought over baby Mellissa and helped my grandmother to hold her. Ok I'm crying now. My baby Mellissa turns 27 years old tomorrow so that was a lifetime ago. I miss my grandparents very much, but even more, I miss the incredible son they had… my father.
I like Karen's Cookies on facebook.
My favorite memory of my grandma is her teaching me to sew.

The fondest memory I have of my Grandma was the time she showed me how to make "Hootinannies"! They were made out of her left over pie dough and cinnamon and sugar. She would roll them up, slice and bake. They were delicious and fun to make with her. [email protected]
I liked Karen on FB
hi i just liked karens page. There stuff is great!!!
I don't have a ton of memories of my Granny from when I was little, she was always too busy. But I do remember she always had these big chunky necklaces!
my "abuelita" would feed me soup for lunch everyday!!! and she would do the airplane thing ,so i would eat! just writing that made me smile!
I have so many fond memories of my granny. She is the one who taught me to sew. I made a lot of Barbie clothes but my favorite was the hot pink skating skirt I made to earn my Girl Scout sewing badge. She was such a talented lady and also so elegant. She died 3 days before my daughters 1st birthday, but I know she has been her special guardian angel ever since.
I "liked" Karen's page on Facebook. Also glad to see her blog up and running.
My entire passion for baking comes from my Grandma who literally baked cookies all day four days a week for the hundreds of school children and teachers who would come to our family dairy on school tours and end their afternoon in Grandma's basement eating ice cream and warm cookies. Many days I'd pull the kitchen stool over by her to watch and all the while she'd take the time to explain what she was doing and why, often letting me do the very thing she had just told me about (breaking eggs into the bowl, sifting the flour, scraping down the sides of the mixer). Heaven.
My Granny died when I was 11 (1993) so I have very little memory of her, but for some reason I can visualize clearly what her flat looked like. I remember what paintings she had on the wall, and exactly where all the furniture was, though not so much the colour on the walls.
I never knew my other Granny as she died when my mother was seven, and I really miss having a Granny.
Louise.
My favourite memory of my 'nanny' or grandma is actually from a time after I was older and I went back to visit her (we ended up living on different continents!). For my visit, she had actually purchased ALL of my favourite childhood snacks and put them in "my spot" in the same old corner of the counter in her kitchen. She was the sweetest!
