Start The Year Off Right! {Giveaway}
Many people start the year off with resolutions, but since I tend to break them so easily, I like to do GOALS. On December 10, two years ago, I added this entry to my list of goals:
When I wrote that, I did it with good intentions, but who knows what would have happened if life hadn’t set in. Within a month, my beloved grandma, Nanny, passed away.
Few people in life are lucky enough to have what I did with her. Nanny wasn’t often the perfect ideal grandma type, but she loved me unconditionally, even when I didn’t deserve it. She would literally do anything to help me. And despite her shortcomings, she taught me a lot about strength and family and being able to smile, even when life didn’t turn out quite as planned, and for that I am forever grateful.
I knew for a very long time that Nanny’s time was coming to an end, but I guess it never really seemed real until the day before she was gone. Dad called and told me I really needed to think about going to see her.
I usually managed to avoid it, because I was terrified of seeing her so very sick, but since she was no longer able to call me daily, I knew it was time.
When I got there it was as bad as I had imagined. She was painfully thin and unable to speak, and even though I cried the whole drive down, I was determined not to let her know how scared I was because I knew she would worry…and I didn’t want her to worry.
The tough face plan didn’t go so well after I arrived. One of my last memories of Nanny is me turning into a bawling mess while she struggled to tell me that everything would be okay.
It was so very backward in every way…I should have been conforting her, but that was my Nanny, always trying to mend my broken heart.
NOTHING prepared me for the void I felt when she left this world. Suddenly baking became a refuge, my distraction. Now, almost two years later, here I am.
A lot of it is surreal. This time of year takes me back. Sometimes I cannot believe so much time has passed. I have learned SO much and made friends along the way that helped to fill the hole that was left when I lost Nanny.
It also takes me back to those very first days of surfing the net, looking for any and every bit of available information on decorating cookies.
The first website I stumbled upon happened to be Karen’s Cookies. I was absolutely, utterly, and completely amazed at what I found. There I sat in the Hyatt Place during our Christmas vacation, enchanted and ordering every cookie cutter and sprinkle I could afford with my handful of giftcards.
Fast forward to now. Since Karen’s Cookies was the very first cookie door I ever opened two years ago, isn’t it appropriate that for my first big giveaway of the year, Karen so generously offered to provide most of the supplies needed for a prize that I have been dying to give away for 2 months?! For my very first prize of the year, I have, with Karen’s help, managed to put together a wonderful gift! This month’s prize is…
This kit has all the supplies I use to decorate cookies on a daily basis…among them, my favorite icing tips and gadgets, my preferred food colors, icing bottles, DISCO DUST and much much more!
Now, I apologize for the tears. {Nanny didn’t like re-hashing the bad days} And I didn’t mean for this to turn into a sad tale, especially since this is a giveaway…But overall, this has a happy ending. A wonderful new story from the end of another, memories that will always make me smile, and the knowledge that Nanny is just as proud of me now as she was when I was a kid and would draw silly pictures of all of her pals. She carried on every single time like I’d given her a Rembrandt =)
All this said, I really hope this kit falls into the hands of someone who needs it as much as I did at the beginning of my journey, or someone who is as passionate about cookies as I am.
First of all, you can head on over to Karen’s Cookies FB page and “LIKE” her since she was kind enough to do this for me. That’s reason enough to like her in itself. And if that doesn’t convince you, one looksie at her cookie website will!
If you already do “LIKE” Karen, just tell her hello, and come back and let me know…she and her hubby Mike have some of the best service and fastest shipping, AND she has this great habit of always tucking a surprise in each package. You gotta love that!
For a second entry, I just want to keep it simple. Leave me a comment telling me your fondest memory of your “Nanny” {Everyone has a Nanny, whether you call her *or him* that or not}…
There are no rules about what you share, I’d just like to give everyone else a chance to share something special about their loved one.
Remember, each comment IS AN ENTRY, so post each one separately, AND leave a way for me to contact you.
I will choose a winner next Thursday using random.org, so keep your eyes open =)
*and as always, tweeting this giveaway is a free bonus entry*
Since this is a giveaway post, I had a few birthday cookies in the archives that seemed appropriate. Afterall, winning is almost like receiving the gift of all birthday gifts. {That is, if you are into cookies of course =)}
Thanks for the tip to check out Karen's Cookies. I "like" her on FB now b/c of you. 🙂
As for my "nanny" I remember her telling me when I was getting married that I needed to learn how to cook b/c that was very important to a husband!!
I remember when she was teaching me to play cards that when you have finished your turn, you "knock" on the table. Oh, Granny, I miss you. 🙂
My GG used to let me dress up in all of her fancy clothes and earrings and I'd wear them all over the house. She's been gone for 4 years now and the ache never goes away.
I forgot to add my email!

I "like" Karen's Cookies! 🙂
It's hard for me to pick just one favorite moment with my Nana, the all were super special! I miss her so much.
I think it's beautiful the way you were so attached to your Nanny. My favorite memory of my grandmother is her waking me to and from ballet class. She was a tank of a woman who spoke many languages, arrived in NYC through Ellis Island and worked as a corset maker and then became a licensed practical nurse. She was an original. We keep them alive by remembering.
Hi Callye,
Thanks so much for introducing me to Karen's Cookies. Can't wait to shop online and get me some of that DISCO DUST!!! By the way stopped by her FB page and said Hi!
Thanks Again.

My favorite memory of my "Baba" was making cabbage rolls and apple pies with her. She instilled a love of cooking and baking in me which I will treasure forever.

Aww, Callye! ?
First, your cookies are GORGEOUS! I LOVE that b!
Second, my Nana just does last year. I was so lucky to have her in my life for so long. She was always the FIRST person to call us on our birthdays….at 7 am!!! 🙂 And she made the BEST Whiskey Sours!
My "Nanny" isn't a person, but a thing. Reading your post I thought of my struggle with infertility. The emptiness was what pushed me into the kitchen and ulitmately to Culinary School, which had been a dream of mine. One can never replace the other, but there is something to be said for having things in your life that give you incredible joy.
Even if it is a stockpile of cookie cutters!!!
Popped in at Karen's Cookies and 'liked' her FB page!
My fondest memory of my 'nanny' is when she became mine. My biological grandmother on my dad's side died rather young, before I was born, so I never knew her. When I was six, my Grandpa remarried and I had a Grandma! I was so excited. The best part of the story is that she was the mother-in-law of my aunt (my father's sister). People get so confused when I tell the story. She just passed away a few years ago, and during the 30+ years she was in my life, I never felt like she was a 'step' grandma. She is survived by 25 grandkids, and over a dozen great-grandkids and counting! I miss you grandma!
I am so blessed to still have both my Nana and my Granny (who's 100!) They are both so loving, wise and dear to me. My "Gumm" (Grandfather) passed away over 10 years ago. I remember going swimming in pool at the farm on hot summer nights with Gumm. I still can remember the smell of warm air, the water and him. I how I miss him!

(I also "liked" Karen's cookies but I really do like her beautiful cookie things!) Thanks! 🙂
Love your cookies. Decorated my first cookies this past Christmas. I thin k I am hooked!
I liked Karen's Cookies on FB.
Tweeted about it too!
My "Nanny" would have to be my great grandma. She could bake ANYTHING!! When she was in her 90s, my mom and I would go visit her every week and clean her apartment, clean out her fridge (she couldn't see when things got yucky anymore!) and have lunch with her. She would always make her own bread from scratch, it was SOOO good! And she always had made super strong tea, and served it from a beautiful teapot. She was an amazing woman.

Tears are coming to my eyes just trying to pick one favorite.. there was the time she smashed a can half full of soda all over with her bare hands, all the chocolate shakes, driving around looking at xmas lights and eating mcdonalds, the way her blue quilt smells, her renting us a sega genisus every weekend.. haha…. just all the love 🙂
Thank you for letting me know about the FB page! I joined right away! [email protected]
My favorite memory of my Granny was of her cooking in the kitchen. She was the best cook in the family and would make the birthday meals for all her grandkids birthdays. My favorite was chicken & dumplings which she made for me every year on my birthday. I miss my Granny everyday!
My grandma was a spitfire. Too many to say– but in terms of a simple act of kindness to me, she brought us breakfast on the couch, bacon, hot cocoa, buttery toast during cartoons!!!
[email protected]
When I hugged my grandmother, I was buried in her embrace and her large, German bosom. She was soft, inside and out, warm and kind. I knew that she loved me. My favorite memory was of cleaning beans with her on the porch and then watching as she made Green Onion Pancakes, a treat that my mother now makes for my children. I miss her. Excuse me as I go get a tissue.
My Grandma is now 97 years old. She's a tiny, tiny woman.
I will always remember and miss the way she would always take the bunch of us (five in all!) out for fish & chips. This included piggy backing my baby sister all the way to the store. She even handmade the baby carrier for my baby sister.
My fondest memeories of my grandma are just the everyday things I did with her. She was such a neat lady. She taught me a lot on how to be just myself and live up to my own expectations.

I have so many fond memories of my grandma, and my great grandma that I was honored to know as well. One of my favorite things that she always did when we were little is buy those tiny boxes of cereal that were FULL of sugar for when we stayed the night at her house. Something small, but it meant the world to us!
I "liked" Karen on facebook too!
Hi Callye!! How are you doing today? Hope you are better xo. I came to visit you for some inspiration feeling a little blaaaaaaaaaaa today. After looking at your cookies I am torn if I should get to it or if there are enough beautiful cookies in the world already :o). I sure could use a cookie date with you to get me out of my rut. Hugs
I always enjoyed the treats my grandmom had.
My grandmother passed away just last December, so I understand what a loss that can be. My grandmother was organist at her church for 50 years! She played beautifully and I remember sitting beside her on the organ bench and singing harmony with her.
I went straight to karen's and almost didn't make it back-now that's a business after my own heart! and of course, I 'liked' her right away! <3
I love my grandmother when I was 6. Thankfully she lived with us the last year of her life, so I have wonderful memories. I think if they had stuck her in a nursing home, I would have never known her.
Growing up in the 50's we had no central heat, so my Mamaw was the first up to heat the house each morning. she would warm my saddle oxfords and socks on the oven door so my feet would be warm for my walk to school. I lost her when I was 16 and I still miss her everyday and I am 63.

My grandmother was so soft, she always told me this story of a mouse called Anatole who lived in a cheese store. Awesome stuff!
You just gotta love your grandmother, right!
Missed out on the Grandma thing – had a neighbor who became our "Nanna" for a couple of years. I loved decorating gingerbread houses with her at Christmastime.
I love Karen! But I "liked" her too 🙂

I used to spend every Wednesday night with my Memaw and Pop and those were some of the best times of my life. We usually didn't do anything too special, just day to day life stuff but I loved (and still do) spending time with her.

I liked Karen's on facebook.
My nanny is the greatest. All my friends called her nanny and still do to this day.
My Granny was such a wonderful person; she was my best friend. I have so many fond memories of her and miss her dearly – she passed away a year ago on Jan 25th – 2 months before my son was born. I wish they could have gotten to meet each other. When I was younger, she would race me to her mailbox and back. 🙂

My grandmother was a bird watcher, she would sit in the kitchen every morning and write in a journal about which birds she saw. When she passed away, I kept her journal…. I read it when I see birds she taught me about.
I love Karen, I have been a regular visitor on her site for a while now, lots of inspiration! And my favourite memory of my Grandma is bringing her to meet my daughter for the first time. We had 4 generations together that day, it's something I will always treasure, her holding my daughter.
Hi Sugarbelle…your post was very touching. My fondest memory of my grandma is waking up at 6 AM to go for a walk outside with her. We used to go tie up the dog, let the hens out, collect eggs, pick fruit for breakfast. She walked barefoot on her morning walks and I as a kid I thought she was an amazing strong woman! Well she was!! And the whole family misses her presence.
Love your website and Sweetopia's…I read your blogs regularly for inspiration, ideas, recipes and directions.

Hi Callye!
Thanks for sharing this personal memories of yours. My Nanny, called "Oma" here in Austria, made the best cookies for christmas I can remember. She had several recipes she did every year and some specials that changed over the years. When we arrived at her house in the week before christmas, she already had the whole buttery filled up with boxes of cookies. This were the best memories for me 🙂
Unfortunately she died some years ago. Now is my aunt in charge to carry on this family tradition 🙂
It would be great if I could help her with your Decorating Kit 🙂

oh yes and I liked Karens Cookies on fb 🙂
I "liked" Karen's Cookies on fb!
I had a "Nana" that I loved dearly. She was from Kentucky, and had the sweetest accent. 🙂 She was the first person close to me to pass away (when I was old enough to know what was going on), and it was such a shock when I got the phone call at work about her passing.
?
We called my "nana" our "Granny"…and when we became teenagers we started calling her "Gran." We were lucky enough to have her live with us,and she gave us lots of bits of wisdom. One of may favorites: My sisters and I would often pass through my Gran's apartment on our way out for a date. If she thought we weren't dressed appopriately, she would tell us to "leave something to the imagination." And she said, "No matter how good you look, what can be imagined is always better." She was and still is right about that!

I love karenscookies.net…..and now I "like" it on fb too!

Liked Karen and you on Facebook and I am so excited!! Baking is my passion and I have recently set some goals for myself similar to the ones you talk about here. BTW…I found you via Sweetopia and the guest post there(=
I also have fond memories of my Great Grandmother. We didn't see her as often but when we did there was always a special stash of cookies hidden in the cupboard for special visitors and great grandchildren. She was a little petite little think with beautiful snow white, long hair rolled and wrapped into a bun! The "true" look of a grandmother….actually a thin and tiny version of Mrs. Clause!
I liked Karen's facebook page. Thank you so much for the chance at this awesome giveaway!!

My Grandma has, and will always be one of my very best friends. She is just so special to me and everyone who meets her. One of my favorite memories is from when I was a little girl. I would spend the night and Grandma would make Grandpa sleep out on the couch and we would stay up all night talking, lol!
I loved Karen's Cookies so what a fab giveaway – and something new to "like".
My grandma is a super woman. When my grandfather passed I moved in with her to help her with the transition and so we share a special bond that I am so grateful for.
Just read about Karen and now "like" her on FB…I will like her much more when I place my first order from her store! 🙂
Our "Nana" was our Great Grandma. She didn't bake too much that I can remember, she did ceramics. And, she was good! The one thing I will always remember is when she taught me to make strawberry jam. I still make it the same way 🙂
I love Karen's Cookies and I am a fan on fb! I would really love to start making awesome cookies for everyone and every event possible!!
I have SO many memories of my Granny, but I would have to say that what I think about most often is that she was the best seamstress I have. She made everything from clothes for my dolls to my Halloween costumes. It makes me smile just thinking about it!
I always remember a very special lady at this time, because when I was just a child, I received one thing from my Great Grandmother's house after she passed away. My dad gave me a very special glass ornament (special, but very simple) that we always placed on our Christmas Tree every year following. Each year, I was reminded of that special lady by that ornament.
Your cookies are beautiful! I found your blog from Marian at Sweetopia! Great giveaway, especially for someone in a town that doesn't have access to all these amazing items! How cool 🙂
Carrie
My favorite memory is always making tons of cookies with her at Christmas time! We made 6 different types of cookies and dozens of each type. It was always the best time of the year!

Hi! Thanks for passing along Karen's FB page and her blog/website! She has great tutorials there and now I know where to go to get supplies and fun cookies! I am just starting my "cookie journey" and am so excited to have so many great resources to look to! Yippee!
In regards to my favorite memory with my grandma (my nana)….it would have to be a mix of two…the first was her telling me stories of her as a kid…one in particular…when the milk man would come and drop off bottles of milk in the winter time and she would get up early as a little girl and run out and eat the frozen milk like ice cream! The other is building my doll houses piece by piece. It was our project together and I remember every special moment of building it with her. She was a very special woman!
I liked no I loved Karen's Cookies on facebook. I am so happy to have found her and you.

One of my favorite memories of my great grandmother is going to visit her and watching her cook these amazing Italian feasts. The food was something that i just can't re-create. She always had time to do little things to make you feel special. I was allowed to fill out the order for the milkman and just thought it was so cool to get up in the morning and get everything out of the tin box by the door. My great grandmother always put my milk in an elephant pitcher so I could pour it myself. I now have that pitcher in my kitchen and use it with her great great granddaoughters.

My favorite memory of my nana is making cookies with her – one time we made rosettes, and I thought it was so fun to fry a cookie 🙂 [email protected]
I've been watching Karen's videos for the past few weeks, and now I've "Liked" her on Facebook!
I lost my mormor (Danish for "mother's mother") in 2003. I still miss her so much.
One of my favourite memories of her is the freezer burnt ice cream she would always serve! She wanted to make sure she always had some on hand when we came over, so who knows how long it was in the freezer! But I would eat it with a smile, because she was my mormor! <3

My mom was my nanny. Every memory is my favorite 🙂
Oooh I love getting my icing colors from karen's 😀
Fondest memories with my grandma include her teaching me how to paint and do embroidery 🙂 I am thankful for those skills and my memories 🙂
My favorite nanny memory would be the oatmeal she would make me every morning. I am now a nanny and love it! And Karens cookies 🙂

I meant [email protected] to the post above!!
Callye,
I am a huge fan of Karen's Cookies an have been ordering from them for a while and now I "like" them on fb. They always seem to have everything that I need! Thanks so much for this give away, your cookies are always my favourite!
My favorite memory with my nana is baking with her. When she made pies, we would take the leftover pie crust and roll it out, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on it, roll it up, slice, and bake. soooo yummy. She taught me how to sew too. She's 100 & will be 101 in June. Crazy. I would love to make some cookies for her 101st biethday with your kit! Love your site!
I also 'liked' Karen on facebook! I hope I win! Thanks!
I "liked" Karen's fb page and am really excited to have found her site and recently yours!

My fondest grandma memories are actually of my husband's grandma. She is a wonderful and strong lady and I love her dearly. Ever since marrying my husband she has taken me in as one of her own. I love the nights spend playing cards or chatting with her. Lately she has been getting sicker and it's terribly hard, especially watching how it effects my husband. Thank you for sharing your story with us, it was very touching!

I tweeted about the giveaway 🙂 twitter name is VeteransWife
Just liked Karen's Cookies and can't wait to make a purchase there! Everything looks amazing (especially because there is a serious lack of cookies supplies where I live.)
And my favorite Nanny memory is of eating dinner with my nanny when my parents were at work late.
Thanks for the chance at winning! You give me (and all of us!) an amazing goal of how I would love my cookies to look! You are truly an artist! I "liked" Karen. Can't wait to check out her stuff even more.
I only had grandma's…grandpas both died before I was born. But one was the baker. We didn't see her often, but when we did the biggest thing I remember is walking into her house and in her kitchen were probably 10 different plastic tubs (like the gallon ice cream containers) filled with all kinds of cookies. It didn't matter the time of year, and I can only remember baking with her a couple of times (though she passed when I was only about 12). But I loved her cookies! Thanks for the jaunt down memory lane!

My favorite memory with my grammy was going to Nebraska just the 2 of us for my t-papa's 80th birthday and then we go snowed in and had to spend extra days and it was me, and my grandmother, great grandparents, and great aunts, and uncles. I was 8 at the time and still remember it. I go to learn family recipes and how they set the table, make a bed etc. My t-papa died 5 moths later and it was the last time I saw him. I also am the only one of the great grandchildren that "know" him and I feel very special.

My grandma took care of me and my sister after my dad passed away when I was 6. She always prepared dessert for me when I came home from school. I didn't understand how much she loved us. Now I understand, but she got sick….I want to make her happy and tell her how much I love her before it's too late.

I have many memories of my grandma and still have the pleasure of spending lots of time with her and my grandpa. My favourite memory of her though is going over and sitting and having a cup of tea and just chatting about what has gone on in the past couple of days. Goodness knows I am grateful for my grandma!
I "like" Karen on facebook!
My favorite memory of my Mimi is spending the night at her house. I have 2 other sisters, but I would always get to be the one to sleep with Mimi because I was the "hot" bodied little girl and my Mimi was always cold. She is one of my favorite people in the world, and I cherish every moment with her!
My 'Nanny' was my grandmother we called Granny. She was the best cook. My favorite was and still to this day homemade mac n cheese. She made it for me for EVERY occasion. I never had to ask for it. She was our 'rock.' Sundays and holidays are just not the same without her. I miss her very much. You can reach me at [email protected].
My Granny came to visit us at our sad little duplex in a horrible neighborhood. It was the heat of summer & my little baby brother was sweating away on a blanket on the floor. It was miserable but all my single working mom could afford. My granny had not been there long when she just hopped up and left. My mom felt terrible, like our humble house wasn't good enough. Not long later, in comes granny carrying an air conditioner she went and bought.
I don't really have any memories of her saying "I love you" or being super sweet. She has always been a woman of actions……that speak louder than words.
Martha
What I remember from my grandmother is that she used to tell me I was too skinny and needed to fatten up. Boy, I wish for those days!
OK, so this is going to sound odd! My grandma was not a cookie baking, knitting kinda gal. She smoked like a chimney and drank cheap beer by the cases. But, she loved me. Yes, me, the misfit in school, the not so pretty one. She always asked me to get her VICKS vapo-rub that she rubbed on her chest every night. Anytime I smell that smell, I am instantly transported back to the early 70's and feel the love.
i LOVE LOVE LOVE all your stuff, you are so talented and every cookie looks perfect! i was wondering though, how do you get your, what i would call "second piping outline" to not crumble off the cookie after it dries? i've outlined, flooded then after it dries try to do another outline on top like you do for more detail but mine crumbles and falls off 🙁
I "liked" Karen on Facebokk too!

I don't know if I can pick just one memory of my grandma (Actually my great grandma) she was the most amazing woman I have ever met. Even to this day I look up to her. She was the sweetest lady and never said anything negative about anyone. She made you feel like the most important person ever. She radiated love and affection for everyone. I truly wish I could be more like her. I wish she was still here. She was a go getter who never gave up and used a chain saw into her 90's. She was the greatest. I miss her dearly!
