Start The Year Off Right! {Giveaway}
Many people start the year off with resolutions, but since I tend to break them so easily, I like to do GOALS. On December 10, two years ago, I added this entry to my list of goals:
When I wrote that, I did it with good intentions, but who knows what would have happened if life hadn’t set in. Within a month, my beloved grandma, Nanny, passed away.
Few people in life are lucky enough to have what I did with her. Nanny wasn’t often the perfect ideal grandma type, but she loved me unconditionally, even when I didn’t deserve it. She would literally do anything to help me. And despite her shortcomings, she taught me a lot about strength and family and being able to smile, even when life didn’t turn out quite as planned, and for that I am forever grateful.
I knew for a very long time that Nanny’s time was coming to an end, but I guess it never really seemed real until the day before she was gone. Dad called and told me I really needed to think about going to see her.
I usually managed to avoid it, because I was terrified of seeing her so very sick, but since she was no longer able to call me daily, I knew it was time.
When I got there it was as bad as I had imagined. She was painfully thin and unable to speak, and even though I cried the whole drive down, I was determined not to let her know how scared I was because I knew she would worry…and I didn’t want her to worry.
The tough face plan didn’t go so well after I arrived. One of my last memories of Nanny is me turning into a bawling mess while she struggled to tell me that everything would be okay.
It was so very backward in every way…I should have been conforting her, but that was my Nanny, always trying to mend my broken heart.
NOTHING prepared me for the void I felt when she left this world. Suddenly baking became a refuge, my distraction. Now, almost two years later, here I am.
A lot of it is surreal. This time of year takes me back. Sometimes I cannot believe so much time has passed. I have learned SO much and made friends along the way that helped to fill the hole that was left when I lost Nanny.
It also takes me back to those very first days of surfing the net, looking for any and every bit of available information on decorating cookies.
The first website I stumbled upon happened to be Karen’s Cookies. I was absolutely, utterly, and completely amazed at what I found. There I sat in the Hyatt Place during our Christmas vacation, enchanted and ordering every cookie cutter and sprinkle I could afford with my handful of giftcards.
Fast forward to now. Since Karen’s Cookies was the very first cookie door I ever opened two years ago, isn’t it appropriate that for my first big giveaway of the year, Karen so generously offered to provide most of the supplies needed for a prize that I have been dying to give away for 2 months?! For my very first prize of the year, I have, with Karen’s help, managed to put together a wonderful gift! This month’s prize is…
This kit has all the supplies I use to decorate cookies on a daily basis…among them, my favorite icing tips and gadgets, my preferred food colors, icing bottles, DISCO DUST and much much more!
Now, I apologize for the tears. {Nanny didn’t like re-hashing the bad days} And I didn’t mean for this to turn into a sad tale, especially since this is a giveaway…But overall, this has a happy ending. A wonderful new story from the end of another, memories that will always make me smile, and the knowledge that Nanny is just as proud of me now as she was when I was a kid and would draw silly pictures of all of her pals. She carried on every single time like I’d given her a Rembrandt =)
All this said, I really hope this kit falls into the hands of someone who needs it as much as I did at the beginning of my journey, or someone who is as passionate about cookies as I am.
First of all, you can head on over to Karen’s Cookies FB page and “LIKE” her since she was kind enough to do this for me. That’s reason enough to like her in itself. And if that doesn’t convince you, one looksie at her cookie website will!
If you already do “LIKE” Karen, just tell her hello, and come back and let me know…she and her hubby Mike have some of the best service and fastest shipping, AND she has this great habit of always tucking a surprise in each package. You gotta love that!
For a second entry, I just want to keep it simple. Leave me a comment telling me your fondest memory of your “Nanny” {Everyone has a Nanny, whether you call her *or him* that or not}…
There are no rules about what you share, I’d just like to give everyone else a chance to share something special about their loved one.
Remember, each comment IS AN ENTRY, so post each one separately, AND leave a way for me to contact you.
I will choose a winner next Thursday using random.org, so keep your eyes open =)
*and as always, tweeting this giveaway is a free bonus entry*
Since this is a giveaway post, I had a few birthday cookies in the archives that seemed appropriate. Afterall, winning is almost like receiving the gift of all birthday gifts. {That is, if you are into cookies of course =)}
I can completely relate – my grandma was my whole world. She lived with us my entire life and it was like losing a parent when she passed away. My favorite memories with her all involve her cooking or crafting, and me sitting with her trying to be 1/2 as good as she was at sewing, knitting, cooking, baking .. everything!

I have such great memories of my Grandmother who died a couple of months before I got married. When we were little she would make us ovaltine every night when we slept over her house and she would always rub my back and tell me silly stories- miss her so much!
I am a fan of Karen's cookies- love her! 🙂
I love your cookies! I am a baker and cookie decorator but I have lots to learn. Your cookies are amazing. My nanas weren't a big part of my life at all. I would have to say I have a founder memory of my grandpa. He is definitely was the best. He would play with my sisters and I all the time. My foundest memory as a child was the long walks he would take us on and the stories he would tell us! I miss him so much and wish he was alive today to see my children 🙁

I love ordering for Karen's. Didn't know she had a FB page, so thanks!
My fondest memory of my grandma is the times she actually listened to me when my own mom would just shut me down. She was always there to encourage me and just let me talk. She would then tell me what she thought and give me some helpful tidbits but never pressured me or made me feel bad. I miss that. I try very hard to let my nieces and nephews know that I will always lend an ear, let them talk and just be there for them. You know …pay it forward! I am also learning this cookie decorating and passing it to them if they want to learn. So far, my 16 year old nephew is doing quite well! He is looking forward to Valentines Day! I started about 2 years ago on Karen's site. She is selfless! I have a long way to go but it is so much fun!!! I am still acquiring supplies so I would love the giveaway. Nonetheless, I appreciate the knowledge and inspiration you and Karen provide! God Bless you!
Hi Callye! Thanks for offering such a great giveaway 🙂 I left a message on her FBook page and am excited to hear about product updates, as if she doesn't have enough AMAZING things on her site to make me go broke!
Thank you for sharing such a personal part of your life. I *wish* I had a grandma story to tell you, but the sad fact is I grew up never knowing ANY of my grandparents on either side of the family. I hope one day to be one of "those" grandmas whose grandkids tell others how cool or close to her they were…..
My grandma is the best person ever. The mother of 7 and grandmother to many she's also in the kitchen cooking up meals! She goes out of her way to whatever she can for me.

I visited Karen's face book page and I like her too.
Of course, I "liked" Karen's cookies! What a trove of ideas!
If I am lucky enough to win, you can contact me at jburton1114 at gmail
My favorite memory of my grandmother is about her sense of hospitality. She was a southern preacher's wife in a very small town, and EVERYONE came to the preacher for any problem or situation…so the house was always full. Nobody was ever turned away, and there was always a cold drink, a snack, or a meal for everyone!
again, you can contact me at jburton1114 at gmail in the event that I'm chosen!

I found your blog through Sugar & Meringue. Very cute!! Thanks for sharing the sweet story about your Nanny. My grandmother was like my best friend. She was always encouraging and loved me unconditionally. Even though we were thousands miles apart (me- Arizona, her- Ohio) we really did grow very close. I didn't ever get to share a day of baking in the same kitchen with her, but I did spend hours on the phone sharing recipes with her (or getting recipes I should say). Those are moments I will never forget and get nostalgic when making them, but they carry traditions and heritage that will last forever, ones that I can pass on to my kids and grandkids one day.
I had a great grandmother just like you. She used to bring me fresh rolls and flowers cut from her flower gardens. She was my inspiration for cooking and baking. I lost her on July 4, three years ago. I miss her deeply and I share your feelings of your nanny.
I liked Karens Cookies! Thanks for sending me over there!
My Nanny's name is Grammy, and she is very thankfully still alive and kickin'! My favorite memory that I have with Grammy is the road trip we took the Summer that Grampy died. We were both heartbroken and needed to get away, so we packed up and spent a couple of weeks touring around New England. We hit every small town tourist attraction we could find and made very few plans, just drove. It was the Summer before my sophomore year in college and I had a blast with her. I will never forget that trip!

My fondest memory of my grandmother comes to mind when i think of CHristmas eve. Every Christmas eve was spent with her and my grandfather. The best Christmas eve was when we all went out for dinner instead of staying home like we usually did. It was one of the best Christmas eves ever. We laughed and talked and made the best memories. I miss her very much. I think this give away is so awesome. Im very excited. [email protected]
Wow I've had a chance to peek more at your blog & Karen's Cookies– Wow is all I can say!! Love finding new baking supply shops with creative ideas. Thanks again for sharing.
I also liked Karen on FB 🙂
Love the cookies!!
My Grandma passed away many years ago, so unfortunately, I don't have a lot of memories of her. My favorite would be one particular day we baked pies together!
My favorite memories of my other Grandma include traveling to many destinations together!

Callye, your post makes me want to cry! I too, was extremely close to my "Po-Po". She was the most wonderful, caring woman in the world and she also showed me unconditional love. As of yesterday, 14 years have passed since her death but the memory of that day will be forever embedded in my mind. But more importantly, I will always remember the bond we shared and how every night before bedtime she would ask for a big hug (she was so squishy!).
Thank you for sparking the memories again, Callye!

I liked KC on FB. I appreciate them hosting the Cookiers Forum.
My children grew up loving Grandma Carroll's sugar cookies created for every holiday. The favor at my sons's wedding was a girl and boy cookie cutter tagged with her "family recipe. When my grandkids arrived, I decided to bake those kind of memories for them.
Your giveaway is sensational. Who wouldn't want tools hand selected by callye?

I had a Grandma Faye. How I loved that lady like she was my own mom. She is the one who taught me to sew and paint my nails red. Over the years I found she was not the greatest woman alive but that never made me love her less. No matter the mistakes I made growing up she loved me and supported me even when my own family did not. Years have passed since she went to be with Jesus and I get teary when I realize at holidays I cant call her, when my dad passed I couldnt call her and let her know he passed. I found a card the other day she sent my husband and I when he had surgery and it made me feel as though she were here with me. Oh how I love that lady!—Amy Jo at [email protected]
My favorite memory of my grandma is her cooking, my nan cook the best vietnamese pork soup ever, me and my brother always fighted with each other every single time when my nan made that soup !…Even tho when she got old, she lost her memo and couldn't remember all her kids and grand childrens but she's still always in my heart !!!

I am closer to my Nana than almost anyone- she is 90 years old and I am so fortunate to have been able to spend so many years with her. She taught me so much in life- her love of cooking and all things beautiful (!) came right down from her. She has also suffered great loss in her 90 years- her strong faith have carried her through.

i did the FB "like" 🙂
also, i'm having a hard time settling on just one memory. when i was growing up, i was the baby of the grandkids which made me the defaulted favorite. i just remember love, love, love and love.

Thank you for showing me Karen's Cookies! I did like her on FB! I loved her website and know it will be a huge help to me this year as I start my home-based cookie business. I have a lot to learn, but it will be fun with talented people like you and Karen who share the love. 🙂 Thank you!
Kara
When I visited my Grandma, we'd walk to the store that my Grandpa kept, and I could pick out anything I wanted for my lunch. Then we'd walk back to her house and she'd fix it for me. 🙂
Love your cookies- grandmas are the best- trying to be a very good grandma myself!
There are so many things I remember about Granny…but the one in my head lately is the divinity she made every Christmas. 🙂

I left a note on Karen's facebook page. I really love her service and her site.
My memories of my grandparents are always with my family cooking in the kitchen. I come from a long line of 'foodies' becuase of my grandparent's great cooking 😉 Thanks for the opportunity.
I liked Karens cookie page as Holly M
My favorite memory of my grandma is baking cookies with her, and especially sugar cookies. She taught me everything I know about baking
My grandma is now in her 90's and my fondest memory is a recent one– her playing her favorite songs on the piano to entertain my one year old son.
Even though I never met her, Karen will always have a special place in my heart. Right before Thanksgiving I found out that my best friend (for the last 38 years) was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. I was shaken to my core. Because I couldn't be with my friend I needed an outlet. I have always loved to bake but have never made a rolled cookie. I did an internet search for instructions and ultimately found Karen and then through Karen I found YOU! It looked like a bakery had exploded in my house. I made dozens and dozens of cookies all with the help of Karen, you and several other very talented bakers on Cookies R Us. You'll never know how much it helped me get through the first week of that nightmare time. Thank you!!
Oops! I forgot to mention that I "liked" Karen. 🙂
My grandmother was from Italy. She lived with us. She didn't speak English. One of my most favorite memories is of her baking bread. She made 5 loaves of bread, every week. It was kept on a shelf in the pantry. One time I ate all of the insides out of a whole loaf (I was 3)She covered for me and my mother didn't find out until long after grammy had died.
I remember visiting my grandmother for the first time ever (8 yrs old) and she let me make petit fours in her kitchen. We cut pound cake into squares and she let me make the biggest mess icing them. My mom was a wreck! LOL
Thanks for the chance to win and your WONDERFUL cookies!
Liked Karen's Creations…amazing! Thanks for sharing her with us!
Ohhhh Wow! Thank you for sharing the store!!! I have been looking for ONE place to shop!!! I so badly want Disco Dust!!!!! I got my new baby shapes cookie cutters and mini cutters TODAY!! And found out I'm going to be a grandma TODAY!!!!
So exciting!!! I will tell you about my grandma tomorrow tho…..i always cry when I think about her and my whole family is sitting here!!!!
My fondest memory of my Nonny, was trying on her moomoo's and funky shoes. My sister and I loved playing in her huge closet for hours going thru her old clothes. Great memories! My Nonny died right around the time yours did and it was very hard for me. I like to think that me being obssessed with cookie decorating was partly her doing as she loved to bake sweets.
Thanks for your great post Callye

I also liked Karens cookies too! Thanks

I lost my grandma years ago and I still get teary when I think of her. She taught me everything that I know about baking but like you I did not start to decorate cookies until after she was gone. I think of her all the time and I always feel like she is with me when I am decorating cookies. I do miss her so much but I know that she would be so proud of what I do. I especially miss her at Christmas when I would stay with her for a long weekend of cookie baking. That is one of the fondest memory I have of her.
I have so many memories, I don't even know where to start-I have spent many summers as a child on my grandparents' farm. I remember her patience and the most gentle nature, and ingenuity in handling the tough tasks of running household without running water, heat, or indoor plumbing : )
[email protected]
I love Karen't cookies, thank you for letting us know she's got a FB page : )

I didn't know my grandmother because she died when my mama was young. I was always told that she would have spoiled me and my sister. My mama is a whole bunch of people rolled into one. I would have loved to meet my grandmother but my mama did her best so we didn't feel like we were missing anything. Even through dealing with a mental illness.
My granny would always let me get in the kitchen as a child and mix any and everything I could find to make my special concotions; which I always tried to feed to other family members, much to their horror! lol
One of my favorite memories is from last year when I got my granny and my son who was almost 3 at the time to roll, cut and bake cookies together. I got some beautiful pictures of their hands working together to create the best cookies ever!

I don't really have a fond Nanny memory of my own, but I do have great memories of watching my own mother (loving called "Mamaw Louise")be the world's greatest grandmother to all 8 of her kid's children. Just as with each of her own, Mamaw Louise made each grandchild feel special and she never ran out of hugs and kisses. I pray that someday I can be just half as good a grandparent as she was!

Could I love your cookies any more?! They are beautiful! Liked Karen's cookies on facebook!
I also "like" Karen's cookies on fb
my favorite memory of my Nanny (MiMi) is her cookies at Christmas. She would bring dozens of different types of cookies to our house each year and I remember them so fondly! This year I tried to do it for my family and it is a lot of work! I did ice cookies for the 1st time this year and it was fun!
I did however have a Nanny. Not related but she took care of me when I was little. She never did call me by my name, then again I haven't met an elderly person that has. She always called me Tio. I remembered hating that but now that she's gone I'd give anything to hear it again. She never was one to give a healthy snack, unless you call apples shaken in sugar healthy, lol. Thinking back, I would imagine that's why I had cavities; from that and those sugar sandwiches… When I found out she was in a nursing home I was working at, I would sit with her on my lunch breaks and she would talk about when I was younger. She really didn't remember anyone else, but she remembered the times we had. Funny the things they retain when altheimers sets in. She still loved her sweets tho. Always hoarded them in her room. All This is very random but I wouldn't trade these little bits and pieces for anything.
I soooo didn't realize Karen had a fb!!!! I've learned a lot from her videos. Like it and commented!!!
Doh!!!! [email protected] 🙂
My favorite memory of my Grandma is of how she would come over and watch us when my Mom went to work. She would stay till my Dad got home from work. Grandma would always come with some groceries. We had 7 kids and I guess money was tight for my Mom and Dad. Anyway, Grandma would always let us play make up with her. Me and my sister could experiment putting make up on her and fixing her hair. YIKES……you dont wanna know how she looked when my sister and I made her "beautiful". I cant wait for my girls to get married and have children. 🙂

I "like" Karen's page. =) Thanks for the opportunity.
My "Damma" is nearing 80 and is every bit as special to me as your Nanny was to you. She taught me so much and is the magic behind much of my baking. I lived with her as a teen and she was my babysitter until kindergarten. We have one of those special relationships that I just can't accurately describe.
Thank you for sharing your Nanny with us. =)
You are my Karen! I am so glad to have recently found your site!
My grandma holds the same sweet place in my heart and taught me to live sweets! That was her job in her family while growing up, so she was exceptional at making sweet treats. But most importantly she poured her life into mine everyday! What a blessing she was- and continues to be to me!
I liked Karen on FB:)

There are so many wonderful memories of grandma. I guess I have to pick one that makes me laugh.I loved to go to her house and clean and cook. One day I wanted to vacuum and she let me. My grandpa smoked and his ashtray was full so I vacuumed the ashes up and caught the vacuum cleaner on fire. My grandma walked over and picked up the flaming cleaner and tossed it out the front door and turned the water hose on and put it out. I was so scared but she hugged me and gave me ice cream:) I really miss her.

My favorite memory of my grandma is playing at their house with a big garden and all my nieces en nephues at sunday. We all ate together, the sun was shining it was just a fairy tail. When she passed away we were laughing and dancing at the cemetry (we were between 10-12)she was a hardworking kind lady and would have enjoyed the fact that we were sad but also happy for her.
I love and appreciate all my grandparents. I think some of my favorite memories are actually still in the making. All of my grandparents had/have awesome hobbies and skills so they have made me an assortment of beautiful things that I know I will treasure forever.

Loved my grandma!! she's been gone about 10 years now . . . but she was the sweetest british lady who lived on coffee, chocolate and cigarettes. I skip the cigs part, but the rest is in my blood 🙂

Such a touching post Callye – you were very lucky indeed to have such a person in your life! Memories are strong.
My Grandma has been like a Mom to me my whole life, and I'm fortunate that at nearly 94 years old, she's still doing pretty well. My favorite memory of her was from my wedding three years ago. Grandma had a bunch of Corona's and danced for about 4 hours straight! We have the best photos of her dancing with all of our reception guests who wanted to take the old lady out on the dance floor. Hilarious. Thanks! Amanda
I "liked" Karen's cookies! She has some great stuff!
My NANA was my great grandma. She used to stay home with me on New Years Eve while my Grandparent and parents went to parties. She would bang pots with me, make my favorite foods and cuddle with me. In the morning I would wake up to a bowl of cereal, cut fruit and milk in the fridge. It was my favorite thing to stay there.
I wasn't particularly close to my maternal grandmother. Funnily enough, she was the one in our family who was into cake decorating. None of the rest of us were. Now that I am so interested in cookies and cakes, it saddens me a little to think that here is a hobby we could have shared, and have missed the chance.
I am however very lucky to be blessed with my Nanna on Dad's side, who is still very much alive! She is one of my best friends, and we have baked together for as long as I can remember.
Oh, and I'm not on facebook, so I'm assuming I can't "like" Karen's Cookies – but I clicked on over anyway for a look around, and boy do I LIKE it…! Does it count that I created an account there, and placed my first order? :o)
Had to leave a comment about my other grandmother too. She was a true lady. Always with perfect hair and lipstick. She loved all parties and holidays to have the perfect setting. All the dishes and decorations had to be perfect. She loved to shop for all the right things too! you can contact me at [email protected]
Just had to share one more thing about my grandmother. For her 90th birthday, I made her her first tiered cake (besides her wedding cake). But most special was that my son did a 4-H project that was a scrapbook. He wrote to every relative and friend we could get an address for, all her siblings and children. Had them write and send letters about their fondest memory of her or some story they remembered about her and her life. He then compiled it adorned it with appropriate stickers and she received it as her gift for that special birthday. I always felt that people should know what people think of them and how they feel about someone while the are alive. It always seemed strange how when we loose someone special all the great things and wonderful memories are shared when the are no longer around to enjoy hearing them. Before my grandmother passed away, she made it very clear to the entire family that my son, (her great grandson) was to have the book back so he would never forget his great grandmother! It is one of our families most treasured possessions. Thanks for this blog! [email protected]
Grandma – such fond memories. She was always waiting for me to get up in the mornings and would sit just waiting to see what I wanted for breakfast. She never said no to my requests. I always like the skillet size pancakes, the gravy and biscuits, etc. She also put me to sleep every night on her lap, rubbing my back and saying prayers. I miss her! [email protected]
My abuela, was really funny. She stayed like that until she died at 99 years old. She loved to tease me, so when I introduced my fiance to her (she was 98 and with different languaje to my fiance), she asked me to translate word by word. then she said. "Does she hit you?".

I liked Karen's FB page, thank you for letting me know about her!
What I remember about my grandmother was her laugh, she was always laughing and smiling about something. In the end Demntia took that laughter away from her and she was always worried and "grouchy". It was so sad. The other thing I remember is that when I visited her, she would let me take all her perfume bottles and stuff and let me play with them with my little people. I had a whole bunch of "toys" thanks to her!
I lost my beloved "Grams" three years ago, and I miss her so much!! She was the most amazing funny, sweet southern lady. She loved to cook and bake and I like to think that's where I got my passion from. My favorite memory is when I would fake sick at school, and she would come pick me up and feed me microwave popcorn and peanut butter cookies (half of which she'd feed to the squirrels) while we watched her "stories". I'm sad my daughter will never know her and how much fun she was! Grandmas are the best!!
I "liked" Karen on facebook. Will you give us a list of items so we can put a kit together if we're not lucky enough to win?????
I have ordered from Karen in the past, so do like her:), but now I "like" her on facebook too!
Both of my grandmothers have past away, but I have fond memories of them.
Love the giveaway!!
Growing up,I only had one grandma and she wasn't the most involved, loving grandma, but I do remember going on the bus with her(she didn't drive)to visit Chinatown and Olvera Street in L.A.
P.S. I LOVE BEING a GRANDMA! 🙂
I "liked" Karen! 🙂
I "liked" Karen's Cookies!
I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. My favorite memories of my grandma are the ones that I make every day. I moved into her basement apartment about two and a half years ago. She said it's the best thing that ever happened to her but it's definitely the other way around. My grandma is sassy, stubborn and absolutely wonderful. I love hearing all her stories from her past and I'm so grateful I have this time to get to know her better.
I was lucky enough to grow up next door to my "gramma" and I loved her more than I can even begin to use words to describe. I lost her on my birthday in 2009 and my heart aches every day for her. My fondest memories of her are baking or canning with her in the summers in her kitchen. I learned my love of cooking, baking, & canning from her.

my Nana was like a mom to me my brother and i spent every second of the day with her so i have a million memories with her but my most missed memory of my Nana would be making homemade flour tortillas with her now i get to do it with my girls and they love it all tho i still have not got that perfect round tortillas like she would always have haha

Grandpa, can I talk about my grandpa? He passed away almost…20 years ago (my gosh, that long?). He was the most influential person in my life, then and now. I was raised by a single mom, he showed me what a strong male was. In a childhood that could have been hard, he made it magical. I miss him every, single day. My hope is that I can honor his memory with my daughter, who never got to meet him – but will know him – oh yes she will!
Thinking of my grandma makes me both happy and sad because I miss her so. My dad passed away when I was 7years old and my grandma took over as much as she could. She would awnser any question I had about my dad and made sure he was always there through her 🙂
I "liked" Karens cookies. This is a wonderful giveaway!! Thanks for the opportunity!!
