In The Mood For Chocolate Chip?
My first experience with this recipe was almost two years ago when my friend Johnna sent me the most incredible box of cookies. I was so surprised because not only were they chocolate chip, they were decorated! And to top it off, they were amazingly good!
The only problem was, she sent them to me on the very first day of one of my MANY diets. So to keep myself from eating them all I shared them with my friend Lori.
Since then, she has been begging me to make more. When we got together to make cookies for our friend Jessica’s baby shower, I decided it was probably about time. Poor Lori ONLY had to wait two years =)
Lucky for me, when Johnna sent my cookies, she sent me the recipe, {She’s sweet like that} and she also mentioned that she had found it in the Sugarbakers’ Cookie Cutter Cookbook. I was so impressed with this recipe, I decided to buy it! It was worth the money. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes to bake cookies.
I feel like I should mention, it’s not the book you’re looking for if it’s pictures you want to see. That aspect is actually pretty LAME. However, it contains SEVERAL recipes, and so far, all of them that I have tried have been wonderful!
Ingredients
- 1 c unsalted butter
- 1/3c granulated sugar
- 1/2 c light-brown sugar
- 1 large egg yolk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 ½ c all-purpose flour {I think they got a little overzealous with the flour…try 2 cups first, and work your way up}
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 ½ c semi-sweet mini-chocolate chips
Instructions
- Cream together the butter and sugars. To that add the vanilla and egg yolk. Sift together the flour and salt, and add it one cup at a time until completely incorporated. Then, BY HAND fold in the chocolate chips. You can do it with your mixer, but it might break them up, so I would really just do it the old fashioned way.
- MEANWHILE, PREHEAT YOUR OVEN TO 350°
- While you wait for the oven to warm, wrap your dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least thirty minutes. When it is chilled, roll out cookies on lightly floured parchment and bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes.
- These cookies roll and cut SO WELL!
Thank you so much for this recipe, looks yummie.
I am going to try it as soon as possible, it`s a nice change to my Peggy Porshen recipe (wich is great).

How do I get ahold of the gal that made these? I sent to her Flickr site and fell in love with the cookies she makes. I want to order some. I know that you do not take orders for cookies and that you can refer us to folks. I think that this gal is as good as you, and she come highly recommended from you, so, if you would put me in touch with her, I would appreciate it.
Callye, every time you recommend a book, I buy it. It's a sort of an amazing power you have. The evening we met, you told me about Sugarbaker's, and I bought it. You gave away a copy of Cookie Sensations, so I had to eBay it and just got it on Friday. I love your cookies and your tutorials are so helpful!
Sugar and Spice…I made these..and I co not take orders! Sorry!
This is a wonderfull blog 🙂
I am SO trying these. I will tell you when my family gives a thumbs up about them!
hmmm must try this! Chocolate chip is my favorite! Thanks for sharing!
These cookies look awesome! I may have to give them a try later this week since my girlfriend is scheduled to have a c-section this Thursday! Between the royal icing and the chocolate chips, these cookies are sure to be very "sweet!"
I will have to try these, they sounds delicious! I love chocolate chip cookies, who doesn't?!? You decorated them so adorably!!!!
Thanks for sharing your recipe, they do look very good! I'll have to give your recipe a try!
Oh My Goodness! These are sooo good! I made them tonight and got rave reviews from my kids!
I *think* that Sugar and Spice thought these were the cookies that Johnna sent you, and following the link in your first sentence, went to her flickr site, hence her acknowledging that you don't take orders.
Found you through Taste and Tell! You are wonderfully talented – thank you for sharing that with us!!
just made these and the were gone b4 i could even decorate them and i mean gone even the plate was gone haha
you amaze me on how you can pipe so perfect!!! If I attempted to pipe those foot prints they would all look funky, but i do need to give it a try and keep at it and just practice!!! But I just started making my cookies with a glaze that I really like….I usually use fondant but trying to stay away from that cause its so expensive!!!
OK, so I made these cookies last night, and will be frosting today! They are not very sweet but I am hoping all the icing will help out with that!!! :}
I made these cookies today. I like them. I find them somewhat sweet. I had trouble with cracking on the bigger circles. Maybe due to not letting them cool on the pan enough. Def give this recipe a try if you like cc cookies.

I have cookie ADD and had to try a new recipe. Perhaps I need to add more flour. I used 2 l/3 c because you warned of overdoing it. My edges were not crisp and clean like your cookies–a bit sloppy and "melted". My husband says they are good, and they do smell HEAVENLY. The real test will be the grandkids!
I'm with carrolls.cookies. I think I may have been "under" zealous with the flour as my edges are nothing like yours, and they spread a fair bit. I even refrigerated the cookies after they were cut out. Alas, still a fun recipe to use. And maybe I'll have better luck next time.
I tried these today, used margarine (cause it's all I had) and they were SUPER dry. Might be my climate – Edmonton, Alberta.
I have butter now & will try again.
Can anyone recommend a flavoring for the icing with these cookies? Or just unflavored?
Hi!
I want to try these so badly but it says ?c sugar. How much is that since my computer has a / on that key not a number. Is it one cup? THanks!!
Sugarbelle, I am a Texan currently living in Canada, and I just watched a few of your video tutorials, and you have no idea how much better hearing your Texas twang made my night. I miss home so much!
I’ve got the same question about the “? Cups of sugar” that someone pointed out earlier. What’s the measurement on white sugar here?
I love love love your blog.
Argh I keep fixing that and it unfixes…let me check
It now reads “1/2 cup brown sugar” and “1/3 cup white granulated sugar”. Thank you!

When I was little I would always buy mrs fields cookie monster cookie from the mall (we had a mrs fields there.) It was an iced cookie monster cut-out-cookie like a sugar cookie, but not, because it had mini chocolate chips in the dough. But its the only time id ever seen anything it. so now as an adult, I have been looking everywhere for a good chocolate chip roll out cookie recipe and your blog is like the only blog that has a recipe, AND your blog happens to be the best recipe blog on the internet. BTW, I love you sugar cookie recipe more than anyone elses. By a Long shot. Even more than nfsc, you know, the one thats 1C butter, 1 egg, 1C sugar, 3C flour etc. that ones really good and all, but yours is Amazing. super delicious, pretty, easy to work with, soft, and turns out right every time. Im sure you know this, but everyone else needs to know it too.
I made these tonight they turned out awesome and they tasted soooo good. I used 1/2 Nestle white mini chips and 1/2 chocolate mini chips.. Anyway I Blooged about it at anickh.blogspot.com
Love, Love, Love these cookies!
Hello Suger Belle! I love your blog and I am extremely new to making sugar cookies..In fact I had never made them before I found your blog at the end of last week. I have since made 3 separate batches of sugar cookies since Friday night! (However, they looked like a 5 yr old decorated them. lol) You are inspiring! Not sure if this is on your blog, but it would be great to see your top “do’s and ESPECIALLY dont’s” of baking sugar cookies. 🙂
I love the idea of chocolate chip cut out cookies. I CANNOT wait to try these!!!
i am doing sugar cookies tomorrow night for the kids to decorate and these couldn’t be better. thanks for sharing!
Just wondering, when do you use the cookie cutters? Before or after refridgeration?
after
Thanks!
Trying these today, cant wait. Thanks! Merry Christmas!
Can’t wait to try these.
have you had success freezing this dough and using it the next day? thanks for sharing!
These cookies are adorable – can’t wait to try. But, did I miss the frosting recipe?
It’s under the recipes tab on the main page https://www.sweetsugarbelle.com/blog/category/recipes/royal-icing-recipes/
this cookies are looking great, we just put them in! the texture is great, and the dough is nice to eat raw too 🙂 definetely a great recipe! go for it! 😀 x
I just made these cookies yesterday and sent them out to my taste testing panel (that’s fancy for neighbors who are willing to critique my cookies) and they got rave reviews. They are so good. I didn’t have time to ice them so I drizzled with chocolate (not that they needed more chocolate!) and added a few sprinkles. They were super cute and SO yummy. Thanks so much for posting this amazing recipe!
I made these last year (for Valentine’s Day) and they spread and were quite hard. I think I posted at the time that I screwed them up. I think I took you too literally and did not add enough flour. This time I added 2 1/2 scant cups. Juuuuuust barely shy of the last 1/2 cup. The dough seemed crumbly and I thought it was a total loss. But, I perservered. They turned out AWESOME this time. The cookies held their shape wonderfully and are soft/yummy.
Made these today for valentines in heart shaped a bit disappointed in the taste more of a bar cookie then a buttery regular cookie. Tasted very bland for my taste debating on giving them to my boyfriend or not.
I’m sorry you were disapointed. Did you ice them? I like them as a base, but I would not use them just as a cookie. Still, don’t let that discourage you from buying the book. It really is a great resource for recipes!
I’m going to ice them or dip them in chocolate! That should work!
Did the choolate on top turn out well?

Thank you SO much for this recipe. I cannot tell you how long I have been looking for a good chocolate chip cookie dough recipe that can handle cut outs. 🙂
Thanks for the recipe! Tried it out today. Maybe its ’cause I used mini cookie cutters, the biscuits were not that bland since there were plenty of choc chips in each cookie. I was told it doesn’t have the crunchiness in usual cookies but it still tastes great!
I made this recipe today. They are FANTASTIC! I thought they had a great flavor plain but add the icing and they are amazing. I thought at first it might be too many chips…..it was a perfect amount. I took your advice and used the 2 cups of flour but then added in small amounts to get the appropriate consistency. Mine only needed to bake9 minutes exactly for a slight crunch to the outside and soft inside. This is going to be my go to recipe for cut-outs. Thanks for sharing!
I made these today and mine are very sticky they don’t look at all like yours… Is there something I could of done wrong I followed the recipe to a t tho.
Add a little more flour, and make sure it’s Gold Medal. I thought the recipe was a little finicky myself, so I added a bit more flour!
looks delicious! however, can you please provide the icing recipe as well? last time i tried making the icing, it ran around anywhere and it looked kinda horrible 🙁
The icing recipe is under the recipes tab! I hope it works better for ya!
I have baked these coolies for 2 kids parties and am so pleased with results and so is everyone who tasted them!adults and kids loved them , I tried other recipes for cookie cutting and they were a disaster this recipe is perfect and so easy . Thank you !
These are fabulous! So tasty! Thanks for sharing! Will definitely make these again.
G’day! I have not made these but I was just wondering if I could use this recipe as a cookie cake? Or would you be able to suggest a recipe specifically for a cookie cake? I will be making these babies for my son’s christening.
Ps I love your website and I have become an avid fan! Thank you for sharing! 🙂

I made these cookies yesterday and I could easily eat them all myself. They were perfect with a tiny bit of flooded icing over the top… Yum! Thanks for sharing!
does anyone have a recipe LIKE this that tastes good plain. I need to make valentine’s cookies for 2 classes at school. Thought I’d do this in heart shape, but with white chips & tint the dough pink & then just put sprinkles on top. I’ve seen in somewhere else, but they used the formed cookie sheets, which I don’t have. I was hoping to find a recipe that would taste good plain, but still roll out … is that asking too much? I’m thinking the Kindergarten & gr. 1’s don’t really appreciate the time spent on RI. Also I’ll be short on time as the next morning we leaving for FL for 2 weeks.
Any advice welcome!

I use this recipe for sugar cookies that don’t rise. These are great!
about how many cookies does this recipe make?
I got about 4 dozen 2-3″ cookie cutter cookies out of the batch.
I made these for my daughter’s 5th birthday. She is not a big fan of icing so I made them plain and used a #5 cookie cutter. I have to warn you these are sooooooo addicting. I had them in the oven for only 7 mins a batch and they came out with a crunch on the outside but soft in the inside delicious! Out of this batch I made about 4 dozen 3″ number 5’s.
What did I do wrong? I made star cut-out (medium sized). I went with 2 cups of flour. 2.5 would not have worked. I only used one bag of mini chips for a double recipe. I also think that could be reduced. But, they are kind of dry and unfortunately the star tips are breaking off when I move them from the cookie tray to the cooling rack. They seem too dry. Did I do something wrong? Thanks so much!!
I was just wondering, if this recipe holds the shape well?
7 to 8 minutes was definitely the way to go for me. 10 minutes made them too dry and brittle. I also didn’t realized that the baking sheet was to be lined with parchment paper, until I looked at the pictures before baking my second batch (the recipe only says to roll them out on lightly floured paper. Maybe she meant “roll them out ONTO lightly floured paper”?…). So, I don’t know if the parchment paper made a difference, but the second and third batches, at 7 to 8 minutes, came out much better! I also think that these cookies need icing. I didn’t intend to ice them, but they might look and hold up better with some. I don’t know that I’m addicted yet, but these are definitely delicious 🙂
Making these now, dough is chilling!
Do you think this would work with mini M&M’s my little brother asked for soccer ball sugar cookies with M&m’s in them
Not sure what I did wrong – followed the recipe to the letter. Used an elephant shape cutter and when they came out the over they were all just blobs and hands held their shape at all! Argh!
You may want to purchase the book on Amazon. Maybe the original recipe would help with the spreading. Sorry you had trouble.
Tried this , its good but with so much chocolate chips its sweet I am afraid to put on the icing lol definately will make it again
I used 2.5 cups flour and kt indeed worked well, the cookies were not dry and the shapes kept well, I used a fower, airplan, shooting star, star, ginegerbreadf man (large) all from the wilton plastic set
About how many cookies will this recipe generally make? Thanks!
This info is the cat’s pajsama!
Anyone know if theres a special icing for this recepie to decorate? or is it just Royal Icing?
So you bake it then cut the cookies out?…

I just made this dough & OMG it is so so delicious!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
HI! I tried this and the cookies came out great, I had to add another egg yolk and 1/4 cup of butter because the dough crumbled… is that supposed to happen? My cookies also got stuck and broke on the wax paper… what should I do differently?

I made these cookies for Easter and iced with glaze icing. They were delicious! Everyone loved them. I used the full 2 1/2 cups of flour.
Hi ~ I would recommend only using the 2 c. of flour,, Did 2.5 and it was way to hard to roll out. Still tasted ok, but would have been better with less flour.
HI!
Don’t know how to get in touch with you, but I created a document out of your Royal Icing recipes and posted them in the “Files” section of a cookie group that I am a part of. You have been credited completely for it. I just want it there for newbies to find and it has a link to your website. Is this okay to do? Thanks!
Annette
Awesome cookie! I made mustache and heart cut outs for my daughter, they came out perfect!
I used 2.5cups of flour and I agree it was too much, next time I’ll use 2.25. Also I had a lil extra mini choc chips and used those up, but wont next time, 1.5c was more then plenty!
I did not use my rolling pin, I just hand-pressed the dough to 1/4″, working with 1/2 batch at a time.
Hi there. Cookies look great. I would love to make. Do u have the icing recipe. This is where i usually get stuck
I just made these today, and they’re delicious! I didn’t frost them though. I found they were sweet enough on their own.

i literally just made these cookies using only 2 cups of flour and they’re terrific! My daughter’s class will be very happy tomorrow! Thank you so much!!!
I had a slight problem with these cookies spreading. I only used two cup of flour. Maybe I should have used the full 2 1/2 cups? I did chill them, but maybe not long enough. Do you have a problem with thee cookies spreading?
How many cookies does this yield?
