The Great Pumpkin Cookie Makeover
Some cookie designs never go out of style. Especially pumpkin cookies. When fall comes around this classic shape is always one of the first to make it into my oven.
Over the last couple of years my personal pumpkin cutter collection has grown to include several interesting shapes. My favorite are the tall oblong ones. Unfortunately, they’re kind of rare and a little harder to come by.
Since I don’t want anyone going without cool cutters, I came up with a solution. All you need is a generic *cheap* pumpkin cutter and a strong grip. Give them a little squeeze, and one pumpkin cutter becomes four.
Non-coated cutters work best {coated cutters chip} but I had these on hand. Which pumpkin is your favorite?
Decorating is simple too. I used twenty-second icing for the entire project. Start with the stems then add the sections. Add the sections in alternating layers to create realistic dimension.
These are a super simple addition to any fall feast.
If you’d like to try this yourself the following cutters would work wonderfully:
- Nesting Pumpkin Cutters, Karen’s Cookies {I love the various shapes and sizes}
- Trick or Treat Pumpkin Cutter, The Cookie Cutter Company
- Pumpkin Cookie Cutter, Country Kitchen Sweet Art
And, while we’re on the subject, if you don’t have this pumpkin patch cutter from Country Kitchen Sweet Art, get that too, I’ve used mine time and time again.
ANDDDDDDDDDDDDD…while we’re still on the subject, be sure to check out about a gazillion creative ways to make pumpkin cookies from Lila Loa!
Happy Friday!
Wonderful!
Hi, Callye!!! I’m a huge fan of your cookies and recently started making my own….. Anywhoo I was looking for different shaped pumpkins but wasn’t finding them… Thanks for this post!!!!
Perfect!
What color did you use with the off white pumpkins?
Americolor ivory 🙂
What are the colors for the other 3 pumpkins. Also, do you have a link for the pumpkin cutter?
I think I could just be happy to stare at your platter of pumpkins for quite a long time! 🙂
Loving the cookies, but loving the green leaf bowl at the end as well!!! All of it just beautiful 🙂
I repeta, I know, I’m sorry but … you’re such an artist. This way of docorating cookies is not known in france.
Do you send your cookies in other countries ?
Pretty! 🙂
Such a great tip- Wonderfully easy way to get 4 unique pumpkin shapes, thank you!
How Pretty. I could eat the entire plate of them…right now!
Those are so simple and so beautiful.
I love the idea of changing the shape of just the one cutter.
Thanks!
Love how perfect royal icing is. These look to good to eat.
I think they are all cute, but nothing is cuter than a short fat pumpkin, maybe because I am short and “chubby” so I feel for them;p
Very cool! You rock that 20-second icing!
Girl, just stop it! STOP being so darn clever!
(oh, and please ignore this plea).
Love the different colors you used as well. Pretty li’l pumpkins!
Awe!!! You just made my day! It means the world coming from you!!!!
Beautiful pumpkin cookies from the Great Pumpkin herself! 🙂
This is one of those posts that make me say’ “Hey, I had a tall pumpkin cutter tis whole time and didn’t know it!” Thanks for showing us we had one!! Love the colors! They are gorgeous!!
I check this site every day for updates! What size tip did you use with your 20-second frosting this time? I like how puffy the frosting is. Are you using a tip on a squeeze bottle for applications like this?
I’m going to go out today for some more pumpkin cutters to squish! I love the look of the tall pumpkins, thanks for a great idea!
So clever!
They are so sweet!
Clever, clever! I love the green pumpkin
Great idea – and I like how hey turned out. Plain but with great definition!
simply elegant! I love the colors, very much makes me want to get out the cider and chug away!
What colors did you use? I love that they’re not the typical ‘pumpkin orange.’
Cute, cute, cute! The ivory is my favorite – I love those white pumpkins this time of year!
I love them all!!! Want to make them soon. What color did you use for the green and how did you make the dark orange (add red?). Love the ivory ones, too!!
Your pumpkin cookies are BY FAR the best ones I’ve ever seen! I adore the way you piece them together making the lines, without actually making the lines! You have the best cookie brain of anyone I know 🙂
Ahh, very smart, I would not have thought of that!
I can’t believe it’s already that time of year! these cookies are absolutely picture perfect!
Beautiful!
What a great idea! I have several of the same pumpkin cutters that came in various Fall sets I have acquired…. Now I can squish those duplicates into new shapes… thank you again for the great tip… You are so generous to share all you do with us!
too fabulous Callye! Hope you had a fabulous weekend!
Hello!
First of all, sorry for my english.
I love your creations and your blog is too cute!
I’d like learning this skill. Is so difficult for an apprentice?
Have a good time from Nadia from Italy!
I guess the rounder ones are my favorite, but I like oblong ones too. I absolutely love this decorating style for them and I’m dying to try it myself – will have to get pumpkin cutters – can you believe I don’t have any? That’s ok though, becuase last year I did manage to get a halloween kitty, skull and tombstone in a set so I’m off to a good start! Have you ever done a cornucopia cookie? I would love to see how you would approach it!
Oh what fun! I’d love this on my lunchbox 🙂
Your cookies are always stunning – I love seeing the step-by-step photos.
That cookie cutter tip is so smart–I really love those oblong pumpkin shapes too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such beautiful pumpkin cookies!
gorgeous as usual….I love the color combo!
These are too cute! I had major issue with royal icing this weekend. …I need lessons!
Love these! Just so pretty and perfect! I love the simple, classic style, and the rich fall colors!
What a great idea !
These are amazing…I have been admiring your cookies and creativity lately. These amazing pumpkin cookies have inspired me to give your technique a try. We shall see!
I adore your website and your amazing ideas!!!!
Which tip do you use for the twenty-second icing and how can I get the colors like yours? I’m really new at this and have only used the Wilton coloring. When I tried to make some apple cookies, it took the entire little jar to make them look red, then everyone had red teeth and mouths.
Hello. I love your website! I am a single mom of 2 and need extra cash. I was thinking about advertising cookies for the holidays that I could bake. Since we live in such a small town I am worried about pricing. There are approximately 3,000 in town. What is a good price to set? I obviously want to make a profit not just break even.
Thanks!!!

I love all your beautiful work! You do such a nice job! I had a question…when doing the alternative sections of royal icing to give the cookie a realistic look do you let the layers dry first then finish the other sections? They look great! Thanks so much!
Sugar cookies are SUCH A HUGE PART OF OUR HOLIDAYS ——I can’t wait to try making them the way you do — they are awesome!! Amazing!!! So pretty!!!
Great idea with the pumpkin cookie cutters!
They look amazing… it’s hard to believe they are so simple to do! I am eager to give them a try soon! I loved your post so much it’s featured on my Saturday Six Pins today 🙂
Your cookies are amazing. Where can I find the receipe for 21 seconds frosting?
Genius, I was about to ask about those pumpkins. Beautiful cookies
What tip did you use for this??? I tried to make some and I am not at all pleased with how they look! I know my frosting consistency is not right but I tried 3 different tips and none of them seemed to work right!
