Star Wars Cookies {R2-D2}
Caution…I am about to have a geek moment. Read at your own risk.
Most of you already know that I am a huge Star Wars junkie. One of my biggest decorating goals is to “cookie-fy” every character I can. I’ve already tried it with my holiday cookie cutters and made an in-depth tutorial on Yoda in cookie form. Now I’m ready to work on my second favorite Star War’s friend, R2-D2. Luckily this guy is pretty simple which makes him perfect for beginners.
This little R2 unit began as this simple tombstone cutter from Foose. I trimmed a little off of the bottom of my cookies but that’s optional.
To make these cookies you will need:
- gray outline and flood icing
- white outline and flood icing
- blue 20-second icing
- red candy pearls or red piping icing
- large and small black candy pearls or black piping icing
To start outline the cookie. The top should be gray, and the bottom white. Next used blue 20-second icing to add shapes as shown below, then quickly drop in candy beads. Use a large black bead for the biggest square and red for the small one.
Give the blue a bit to dry then flood the gray area.
Let the gray set for a bit, then use blue icing to add more details.
Once the gray has set enough that it will not run into the white, flood the bottom half of the cookie. Also, use gray piping icing to make a little dot and drop a small black candy bead into the wet icing with tweezers.
Let the cookie dry for a bit then finish up with the final details. I used a photo of R2 for reference and added two little lines under the facial details, three lines on the front panel {using 20-second icing}, and white rectangles on either side. Of course, this is GREATLY simplified, but after years of cookie-ing, I’ve decided that in most cases that simple is the best route. Especially when making cookies for kids.
This little guy is perfect as a stand alone cookie favor…
but he also looks great paired with other familiar faves!
I hope everyone is having a great week! May the force be with you!
I love R2-D2! Your Star Wars cookies are the best. P.S. should it say gray outline and flood, and white outline and flood ;-).
Missed it! Going to blame it on my pain meds, LOL! Tks.
Anytime :-). I hope you’re feeling okay.
Thanks for another great post. You make it ALL look so easy!!!!!!
my fellow star wars geek, I love these. R2 is my fav character. I cheered when they “introduced” him in the Phantom Menace HEHE. see we have so much in common!
THANK YOU!!! You couldn’t have posted this at a more perfect time. My friend asked me to make cookies for her son’s 4th birthday…a Star Wars party! I had NO idea what I was going to do, but you’ve done it again. Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
Super inmoifatrve writing; keep it up.

Wow! These are amazing! My boys would LOVE these cookies! Almost too perfect to eat. We have been making lots of Star Wars goodies here as well. I just got done coming up with new Star Wars party ideas for my 5 year olds bday this month from what we came up with last year. My boys are Star Wars fanatics! R2D2 is so hard to do…you made it look so easy!
I know nothing of Star Wars but I just looked up this guy and the cookies look pretty accurate 🙂 And by the way, have you noticed the Star Wars tag on your right? It’s bigger than birthday, just to name a common topic. I guess that’s the best proof that you’re a huge fan hehe.
Thanks for sharing this idea.
I love the word “cookify!!!” so perfect. Trying to cookify something makes my head hurt. You have done all the hard work simplifying so many of the characters we all love.
Thanks again!!!
These are so freaking cute!! Love these!
I adore R2D2 and your cookie version of him of awesome! Yoda rocks as well! From one Star Wars junkie to another , I’m glad you had a geek moment. 🙂
love, love, love it!
Love these! Did I tell you that we’re going to Star Wars Celebration in August in Orlando? Let me know if you want me to look out for anything for you!! I’ll see stuff like this http://twitpic.com/2eehwc & http://twitpic.com/2ec9zn (pics from when I went in Aug. 2010)! 🙂
Love this soooo much! Thanks for simplifying ythis little guy! Can you hear me banging my head on the table for making it the hard way?!
Fabulous as always, and just in time for me to share in my May The Fourth Be With You post! 🙂
nothing short of brilliant 🙂
You are my hero… My life is one long, everlasting geek moment, so these cookies are like… Wel… The icing on the cake. You are the master, I am merely the student. May the force be with you. (having a really bad “Luke, I am your father” moment here, hehehehe… Guess what I’ll be watching as soon as the kids are asleep)
oh my god, such a great idea!! <3
He is so cute! If I tried to make him without your tutorial, it would have been awful! LOL I am so glad I can follow your steps to make cute Star Wars cookies. Thanks for sharing your brain with us:)
Slam dunkin like Shaquille O’Neal, if he wrote inrfvmatioe articles.
Once again you show us how to simplify a character cookie along with how to be innovative with a cookie cutter. Love R2-D2 and all the accompanying cookies!
so cute! Where do you get those candy beads, I cannot find ones in the nice dark colours you use in that size, mine are always way too tiny or huge.
Girrrl! My little guy would go crazy over these!
So cute! I love when you simplify complicated characters. I need to do this more!
These are great! Please send some of your creativity my way. I always struggle so much with what to do with my cookie cutters. I just can’t seem to think outside of the box. Your talent really is an inspiration 🙂
So Great! I love starwars. OK, really I only love the last 3 which were the first 3.
May the fourth be with you! I didn’t know about Star Wars Day but I will be prepared for next year! My hubby is demanding light saber cookies now 🙂
These are AMAZING! I was excited to see the progress of how you came up with the design. I’m always amazed at how you see a blank cookie and make it into something amazing every time! I have to completely outline my cookie before I can envision what it will look like, but you just take a completely blank slate and make it amazing. My daughter and I went shopping last night to look at baby clothes (I CAN’T stop!) for my first grandchild coming in August and she picked up a cute outfit and I said “no, I only want ones that I can make into a cookie” she looked at me bewildered and said that it was crazy how I see everything as a cookie now and I literally yelled in the store “it’s Callye’s fault!” 😉 I’m having SO much fun!
Your Yoda is INCREDIBLE, Callye!
I am going to try these today with a few other designs. My husband and children are Star Wars fanatics! I thought it would make a nice “May the Fourth be with you” treat. I recently found your blog, and I am already addicted. Thanks for sharing!
Love these!! Can’t wait to make them:)
Callye!! It’s so wonderful to be back in the states, catching up on all your posts for the past three months! You’ve been so busy making gorgeous cookies! These ones are SO amazing. Seriously, the yoda ones are pretty much astounding. You are awesome, girl. 🙂 I missed you while I was away!
You’re home!!!!!! Ahhhhhh! I’ve been reading about your adventures! Welcome back!!!
Incredible cookies any Star Wars fan will appreciate!
