Cute Little Chick Cupcakes
These were supposed to be ducks, but according to my husband and just about everyone else I asked, they look more like baby chicks. I suppose I could pout about it, but I’ve decided to just embrace them for what they are…so here are my baby-shoulda-been-a-duck cupcake toppers. Say that three times fast.
I’m not even going to pretend to try to talk to you about cake baking. I used the lemonade cake recipe from the latest issue Better Homes and Gardens for these cupcakes. When it comes to cake, listen to ANYONE but me. The recipe made a nice thick batter which is great for making perfectly uniform cupcakes. Same for the frosting. Straight out of the magazine. Buy it.
Now to my area of expertise, cookies.
To make these cookies you will need:
- Stiff yellow piping icing with a #233 piping tip
- Yellow 20-second icing
- Black sugar pearls
- Orange 20-second icing
I used quarter sized round cookies to make these toppers. Begin by laying out the cookies, with plenty of space between. To keep them from sliding around as you work, use a dot of yellow piping icing to “glue” them to the parchment.
Once they have adhered to the parchment, use the grass tip to add a little pouf of hair to the top of the chick. For more explanation on this technique, click HERE.
After adding the top feathers, use 20-second icing to flood the face.
Quickly add candy bead eyes. Let the cookie dry for a bit, and add a beak.
In the meantime, use a large tip {I think mine was a 1A} to create a swirl on the cupcake. Once again, don’t take my word on this. For a little in depth info on perfect cupcake swirls, head on over to Glorious Treats.
Stick the cookie toppers onto the icing, and you’re done!
Cute, even if they didn’t work out quite like I planned. For future reference, if you want duck-looking ducklings, I would use a mini-skull cutter rather than a round and give it a way wider beak.
If you’re in the mood for even more cuteness, head on over to My Candy Crafts to see how easy it is to turn ordinary gumballs into adorable duckies chicks.
They both look great, and are PERFECT little chickadees! 😉 The yellow & green together is so very sunny, and it’s perfect for a sweet spring party – especially to bring some sunshine to a rainy April day. 😉
Heading over to My Candy Crafts in 3…2…1… !
These look too adorable to eat!
Also, if you wanted duck bills without changing from the circle cutter you could probably do it with a filled in “U” shape with the slightest bump at the top.
Those chicks are Absolutely Adorable!
I am in love with your blog. You’re crazy talented and the cookies are works of art!
I was a little lost while searching for a basic cookie and icing technique. Could you please direct me to it on your blog?
Will be back! 🙂
these are the cutest!
Super cute! I love the grass tip for the hair! 🙂
Adorable ! Love the little chick cookies!
OMg they are so cute!! Ducks or chicks! And the gumballs, I remember every time we went to Buffalo from here in Canada, there was a candy store that made little animals out of gumballs like that, I loved to see them.
Absolutely adorable! Love all your cookies, though – you’re very talented.
Quick question on these: does the cookie get soggy if left atop the cupcake for a period of time? Anytime I put cookies or the like on a cupcake, it becomes soggy if not consumed immediately.
Chickies…Duckies…who cares…I just want to eat them up!!! Adorable! I was thinking the same thing as Jessica – a rounded bill instead of pointed might look like a duck. Callye – do you have a comparison between your 20 second icing and the piping icing? Is the piping icing maybe 25 seconds?

So cute! I love their little feather detail on the top of their heads and the gumballs…adorable 😉
The first present my husband ever gave me (while we were dating) was a little stuffed chick, which I affectionately call “duck-chick” because I really can’t tell which he is. Thanks for bringing back sweet memories with this cute little shoulda been a duck chick cupcake!
HA! no matter what they ended up as, they are adorable! I gotta say I was shocked to see cupcakes in the blog post title, but love what you did! so cute. I see a full cake in your future LOL

SO SO adorably cute!
Ah! Love these!!
Adorable! I love all these “outside of the cookie” ears and fluffs and leaves you’re teaching us! Thank you!
I love this new tip you’ve taught me to add elements to the sides of cookies! Does it only work with the stiff piping consistency icing?
Oh , it will also work with flood and 20-second icing!
These are really cute!!! And I just want to say that I REALLY appreciate that you let us know exactly what items you use and where we can purchase them. Many sites just mention the product but aren’t clear exactly what the product is, what size they’re using, what color or what brand. Please continue to do an excellent job at being so detailed!!!!
Thank you!!! Ps I know I owe you an email 🙂

Hi, I’ve just made the cookies. OMG they are perfect. First time I’ve made them. Just the right size for the baby chick. Decorating them tomorrow and making the cupcakes. My kids are big now but I couldn’t resist making these for our Easter camping trip.

Hi. I tried frosting these duck cookies last night and I ran into a problem…the candy eyes (black pearls) that I used, bled into the yellow icing . Did I put them on too early or was the icing too wet?
Thanks.
