The Easiest Cookies You Will Ever Make
Short on time? Feeling pressure to show up to the kiddos school party with something homemade? Believe it or not, I rarely send decorated cookies to school. More often than not, my kiddos get these. Can you believe they’re straight out of a box?
That’s right! Call me lazy, but I’ve watched hours of work devoured in minutes enough to learn, when it comes to kids, this is the way to go.
All you need are a devil’s food cake mix, butter, a few eggs, and a little flour for homemade cookies in a snap.
I bake them on a Silpat and use a cookie scoop to make them pretty and uniform.
A few minutes in the oven and VIOLA! Perfect, chewy, chocolately, goodness.
You can dress them up even more by rolling them in pretty sprinkles {before baking}, because sprinkles make EVERYTHING better, right?
These particular sprinkles can be purchased from the friendly folks over at Shop Baker’s Nook by clicking HERE.
Send these to school, work, or whatever. If you do, everyone will love you. They’ll ask for the recipe too. No one will believe they came from a mix.
If you’re feeling frisky, try adding a teaspoon of cinnamon and half a teaspoon of chili powder for a quick version of Martha Stewart’s Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies. You can also use other flavors. We especially like cherry chip.
You probably won’t need it, but here’s the recipe just in case…
Ingredients
- 1 boxed cake mix {I used Duncan Hines devil’s food}
- 1/2 cup {1 stick} unsalted butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 to 2 tbsp. flour
- 1-2 tsp. vanilla or other flavoring {optional}
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a bowl and mix well. Use a cookie scoop drop evenly sized potions of dough onto ungreased cookie sheets {or Silpat if possible} and bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. Let cool on the sheet for at least ten minutes.
- Makes 2.5 dozen
Never slink into another party with a plastic box of cookies under your coat. These are just as easy, and it’s a good feeling telling everyone you made them. Trust me on this one.
Oh yes, and if you like a little peanut butter to go with your chocolate, try Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies from my friend Shelly over at Cookies and Cups.
I’ve been shopping, so I will see y’all soon with some new fun finds.
Have a great weekend, eveyone!
Se ven buenísimas!!!
Claro que las haré, gracias por la receta! <3
😀
I made these just now. I used 2 tablespoons of cake flour added 1/2 tsp. vanilla, 1/2 tsp almond extract, and rolled them in big dutch chcocolate jimmies. OMG…. Devillishly delicious!
Hi what kind of flour do you use?
Followed exactly. Two times! The batter was so sticky it is nearly impossible to work with. Batter is nothing like photos. Everything went into trash. Waste of time.
Sorry it didn’t work out for you. I’ve found that many variables affect recipes…climate, location, etc. Sometime you have to make adjustments based on the results you’re getting. Cake mix cookies are actually a very old recipe…most don’t call for extra flour, but mine needed it. You could definitely try no flour at all, or, if yours are too sticky, like you mentioned, I would add more, and maybe reduce the liquid.
I found that you have to watch the size of the cake mix. They used to always be 18.25-18.5 oz and now they are 15-16 oz. This makes a big difference. So I cut the butter/oil back to 1/3 cup and they work out great.
Try putting the batter in the fridge for 20 minutes. It will firm up and you can then roll them into balls. Works for me.
You can cope with the stickiness_ and _have young helpers by putting all ingredients in a ziploc gallon freezer bag, zipping it shut and mixing it by scrunching the bag around til well blended. then chill until you are ready to turn bag out on cutting board and proceeding from there. I rolled them on a floured board into a ball
Has anyone tried to add any peanut butter to these?
Hi there! I made these this morning! I admit I am a internet browsing junkie who has good intentions of making so many things I see but never do. Until today. I saw theses cookies and actually went for it. They came out exactly as shown. With the exception of mine having Christmas sprinkles! One thing to mention: do not use a hand blender. The batter is way to dry yet sticky (you’ll see) and just balls right up and into your beaters. I did better mixing by hand. I followed recipe exact (I soften the stick of butter in the microwave) and I used my hand to make little 2″ balls to place on ungreased cookie sheet. Theses cookies come out so perfectly round they look store bought! I’m no Martha Stewart in the kitchen either. These looked so good and tasted fantastic! Like a tummy cake brownie! But better! I can’t wait to add mini reeses pb cups next time or try confetti cake mix or oooo red velvet! Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you so much for the tip! I would have never thought to not use my mixer. I will try hand stirring, maybe then I can skip the cookie scoop.

wow! It seems really easy to make these cookies! What may prove illusion hehehe
First off, thank you so much for this recipe. I had been looking around for some time for a cake mix cookie recipe that actually made the cookies have an actual ‘cookie’ texture. Most I have tried in the past still really tasted like CAKE, and I’m sorry, if I wanted a cake, I would have baked a cake. The edges always turn out that perfect slightly crisp with a nice chewy center. I’ve used this recipe a few times, and even after adapting for high altitude (recently moved from Missouri to Colorado, oh the headaches of changing my baking habits!), they still come out exactly as always.
I really wanted to post a comment this time, because I made a double batch of these lovelies, Red Velvet with White Chocolate Chips, for my work’s pot luck this evening. I used 2 mixes, 4 eggs, 2 sticks of butter (real honest to god unsalted sweet cream butter), a 1/4 cup of flour, and 2 tablespoons of water, which I generally add because sometimes it’s a bit difficult to get everything to bind together into a batter. Ended up taking a gallon tub filled with cookies into work, and I ended up bringing home an empty container and I think I ended up eating 2 out of the whole batch. Everyone went nuts over them, especially when they saw they were Red Velvet. Had several people, including my supervisor asking for the recipe!
Again, awesome recipe, and now I wanna go and browse thru some of the other recipes for goodies I can take into work!
