Decorated Basketball Cookies
Since the beginning of the NBA playoffs there’s been a lot of basketball watching at my house. I’m not much of a fan so I’ve had to find other ways to entertain myself while my husband monopolizes the TV. I bet you’ll never guess what I decided to do.
I don’t usually get excited about basketball cookies, but ever since spotting Jill FCS’s brilliant football cookie design I’ve been dying to try this technique. I love how one simple detail can completely refresh a tired old cookie design.
To make decorated basketball cookies you will need:
- Light orange or yellow piping and flood icing {this is a great time to use up random leftovers}
- Orange airbrush color
- Nylon netting
- Embroidery hoop
- Black piping icing
Begin by outlining and flooding the cookie as pictured below. Be sure to use a lighter shade of orange or yellow for the base so there’s a noticeable contrast when you move on to the second step.
When the cookies are completely dry {this can take anywhere from 4-24 hours}, secure the nylon netting in the embroidery hoop, place it over the flooded cookies {we’ve talked about this before HERE}, then lightly spray with orange airbrush color. If you don’t have an airbrush, aerosol food color spray also works well.
The details can be as simple or complex as you like.
I’ve been kind of obsessed with perspective lately so I used my Kopykake…but traditional lines look just as nice and are very easy to pipe without assistance. It’s totally up to you.
Thanks to the inspiration from other artists, I’ve finally found a basketball design I’m happy with. Now all I need to do is work on getting my television back. Good luck, right?

My team is out…dang it! But I do love these cookies, that netting is genius!
Simple nylon netting? Really? That’s amazing! It’s going on my list-to-buy right now, along with an embroidery hoop. Thanks so much for that tip. Your basketballs look amazing.
Love these! Such a cute and simple thing. Definitely have to give these a whirl (now that I’ve replaced my missing airbrush nozzles. Really, how does that happen?!) – Thanks for the great idea, Jill and Callye!
These are AMAZING! I can’t make my stepdaughters final bball tournament out of town at the end of the month so I will send my husband with a ton of these to surprise her and her team! Thanks, Callye! You are going to make me look like a superstar!
Never thought of an embroidery frame for cookies. Wow what a fantastic innovation 🙂 I love this tip.
Thanks for the shout out. Your work is amazing, Callye!
This is such a great technique (and it would be perfect when making golf ball cookies as well). Best wishes to you Callye for a wonderful Mother’s Day 🙂
Wow, seriously. Genius at work right there. Never would have thought to use netting. Ever.
Great idea for golf balls too!
Thank you so much for sharing, I look forward to getting your tutorials. You are so generous. Thank you again.
Love these cookies Callye & Jill!! Where do you get that type of netting? And will it work without the hoop?
I picked it up at Hobby Lobby in the fabric section.
Callye,
On your basketball tutorial (which by the way it’s awesome!), I see what looks like some basketball courts in background in one of the pics. Do you have a pic of the finished cookie?
Thanks.
Clau
There’s a partial on Instagram…I’ll post a tutorial soon. I made one, I just never edited the pictures 🙁

Hi! Can you recommend an airbrush to buy? I don’t want to buy one that’s more than I need.
Thanks!,

Awesome Basketball Cookie Design. I’m going to try to do something similar. I copied one of your pictures to look at while I attempt to make the air spray coloring and just wanted to let you know that I am not selling the cookies they are just for my sweet little basketball star. (My Grandson)
I hope you don’t mind and I will delete it from my computer as soon as I print it out.
HI! I continue to be in awe of your cookie creations! They are absolutely stunning and gorgeous to say the least! I’m a cookie artist just starting out and am selling locally and throughout the US. So far, it’s working out great shipping my cookies but I’m concerned about the summer months with warmer temperatures. For decorating, I used royal icing made with water, powdered sugar and meringue powder. Do you have any tips/pointers on shipping cookies in the warm, summer months? Your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!
Angela : )
Where can I purchase the netting just love this thank you
Hello, have you frozen these cookies fully decorated and if so how did they turn out when thawed? Making several of these for my son’s party since he don’t eat cake. Thanks
Where do i get nylon netting?
Hobby Lobby or Joann usually has it, along with some Walmart stores.
